I could see Guehi setting his sights on a Bosman next summer now. He will feel wronged by Palace, and under no obligation whatsoever to ensure the club receives a transfer fee for him.
If he still comes to Liverpool his sporting ambitions will be satisfied, as he will be part of a side that will look to challenge on all fronts for the duration.
His salary will at least double, probably triple.
And he can look forward to a several million signing bonus as there will be no transfer fee for us to pay Palace.
It’s a toss-up for me as to whether this moves to January or next summer.
Will probably depend on how much we need him in January. If JoeGo stays fit and Leoni looks good in a couple of cup games then we’ll be fine to wait. If we’re playing Endo beside Virg then we’ll probably have to throw some money at it
If he signs in January he gets zilch, CP get the money -
If he signs next summer, he will probably get a signing fee, which could be a considerable amount..!
Don’t bosman players have the power to negotiate much higher than normal sign-on bonuses? For CP selling in Jan is much better $ wise. For us, getting him in the summer won’t come free but will probably be £10-15m cheaper than Jan. For Guehi, we could genuinely be in a title race in Jan ( ) so what’s a potential PL winners medal worth to him? More than the higher sign-on bonus he’d get in the summer? Also keeping in mind he would be on much higher wages from Jan to May.
We are talking as if we are so sure that Glasner purposely sabotage the Igor signing.
We are talking as if we know for sure that Glasner and Parish are at loggerheads
I would have felt better if we did sign Guehi but that does not mean there was anything wrong with CP’s behaviour.
They have always insisted that they will only let him leave when there is a replacement. They identified the replacement, brought him in for a medical but for whatever reasons, decide not to sign him. That is within their rights to do. They are not about to sign a player they do not feel 100% to when they already have a very good player contracted to them and not obliged to sell.
Then why let him come to us for a medical? Well, in the interest of time. These 2 medicals have to take place concurrently and not one after another in order to finish the deals on time. Not sure what’s the fuss. Until a contract is signed, a deal is not finalised.
They agreed a deal. They allowed their captain to take a medical and agree terms. Their treatment of Guehi and Liverpool is at the very least disrespectful.
Won’t be surprised if Liverpool and Palace are negotiating now to get the move finalized effective 1st of Jan 2026. One that’s not contingent on whether Palace needs a CB as a replacement.
This should be something that should placate Guehi as well.
I suspect that such a deal was in place to take place on 1st September 2025. Everything went quiet on this at the end of July with no suggestion that it wouldn’t happen. 1st January would make sense as there can be no shenanigans with pulling the rug at the last second.
The only thing that will perhaps placate Guehi into not running his contract down is the knowledge that the move is already done. He’s just going to have to wait for 5 months. Palace can probably give him an increased contract (with no extension of the length) to ensure that he doesn’t lose money.
The money is one part why footballers do decide to move to bigger clubs like Liverpool. It’s only fair that having shunted Guehi at the last minute , they need to make up the financial loss till January. That is probably one way they’ll make amends with Guehi somewhat.
There won’t be anything stopping him playing in the latter stages of the UCL as well which is when we would need reinforcements the most.
I really don’t blame Glasner for this (even though he’s likely to leave at the end of the season if not before). Managers often outgrow the club. He’s looking to save his ass and by default , Palace’s season. If he had allowed Guehi to leave without having a satisfactory replacement , his ass might be in the firing line and thereby his reputation.
Any delay with Guehi’s transfer lies solely on the management of Palace.
From not submitting the europa league application form in time.
Not eligible for the europa league made them not get their first choice defender (Diomande).
They then fucked around the transfer window trying to get some signings across but none that would meet the expectations of Glasner.
Attempting to pull the rugs from under Glasner by selling both Eze and Guehi. Especially when it was agreed beforehand that only one would be sold.
It’s being reported that Glasner was flexible enough to ask for 2 defenders as a replacement for Guehi. Which is fair. The permanent deal went through and the loan deal didn’t (largely because west ham promised minutes which Glasner wasn’t in a position to guarantee).
After the complete shitshow , Parrish didn’t have the gumption to have a conversation with Glasner stating that they couldn’t afford to let Guehi go on a free.
But had he done this business with Liverpool at the start of the mid point of the window , he could perhaps have had his price of 40m instead of a reduced 35m. And still have enough time to get the signings across. Should have been done as soon as the charity shield finished.
i mean…thats football 101…play for your spot…earn it…
you’re putting too much stock in that rumour to be honest…if Glasner flat out told him he didnt have a chance of football youd have heard about it by now…anything other than that is an issue for Igor to back himself…
ultimately…even if Glasner said he didnt rate him directly to his face…maybe he just didnt rate him…his honesty should be applauded…
club cant just serve up any old CB to replace the club captain and expect the coach to nod and just crack on with it…
i feel for Guehi, i really do, he was in touching distance of his dream move…but sometimes shit happens, and Glasners first obligation is to the club and its fans, not Marc Guehi…
either Igor doesnt rate his chances, or Glasner didnt like what he saw…if the shoe was on the other foot we’d be happy enough with the result.
Guehi already took points of Chelsea. If he takes points off Arsenal and City and then comes in in January - does that already qualify him for a league winner medal?
