I had not heard of Zubimendi before he came on for Spain in the final. But I recall going on social media and in the midst of a sea of English fans celebrating that Rodri had gone off were Spanish fans and other football fans who all implied that Zubimendi was quite good and how they were not nervous about the substitution. He then proceeded to put on an excellent display.
I wondered then if he would turn our heads. I suspect that Edwards/Hughes et al were already tracking Zubimendi by then - they don’t seem the type to buy into hype that’s generated at these kinds of international competitions.
