People forget that shortly before the Barca stuff really started kicking off we gave him an improved contract. His profile had grown, he’d established himself in the Brazil side, and there were whispers about Barca being interested. Yes, we were interested in tying him down, but he was already under contract for several more years. Giving him an extension at that time did nothing to protect his transfer value, it simply was a move to tell him we saw the growth and were willing to pay him commensurate with that. It was the realization of the idea that if you do well for and at liverpool you will get paid. If all we cared about was getting his to peak valuation and then selling to find football operations we’d have just left the situation where it was and sold him when the offers eventually came in.
I’d quite like to see Mané sign an extension that makes him the best paid player at the club.
Then see if Salah wants to run down his contract at his existing salary all the time knowing that Mané is on more than him (because we’re not selling) or sign a new deal himself that would make him the best paid player at the club once again…
I’m beginning to think that Edwards is having a reverse-Achterberg done on him. He’s been a great credit for many things, but to think the whole structure that he built is going to collapse with him gone is a little over the top.
In comparison to his first part of the season, Salah dip in form has been horrific.
When you add all these silly interviews he has started giving, the fact that he is stalling on signing the largest contract the club has offered anyone, his cunt bag of an agent and the fact that his dip in form has happen at the same time it is easy for it to look like he has stopped giving a fuck.
I just Jurgen to know the score.
Whatever we do I am happy with. Fact of the matter is unless he is 100% committed to the cause there is no way Klopp allows him to stay.
Madrid and probably City are the only clubs that can afford a fee for him this summer who are realistic places for him to go (city isn’t realistic) PSG ain’t doing anything after Mbappe so his options are limited.
With that in mind I think it is far more likely that he stays and leaves on a free
PSG might get rid of Neymar and Messi to appease their fans. Bringing in MO might be a way to appease the fanbase.
I hope he signs and these contract talks prove to be just a blip in the long run. If his mind is set on moving away, well then there is nothing more Jurgen or the fans can do and we move on.
Who was imagining that? Are you exaggerating a slight decline from near perfection into a collapse?
Planning for 100% success rate in transfers when the norm is 50% is just folly, so I used something in between like 2/3rds. Still vastly superior to norm but not as good as beforebased on the structure Edwards has put in place. Maybe the assumption should be raised to 75% success but it doesn’t change the conclusion.
It’s like budgeting for the next few years on the premise that we will make it to the UCL finals every year. You might set your budget on the expectation of getting out of the group stage… But probably not much further than that.
Equally foolish is avoiding a quick check with numbers which would show that even with 100% success rate in transfers (the part you took issue with while avoiding the main point)… That the budget still wouldn’t stretch nearly enough if all our key players were allowed to see out their contracts and go on frees.
It is very normal that a squad that was built over the last 4 or 5 seasons would need wholesale changes in another 3 seasons due to age. And that the refresh partially needs to be funded by moving older players on for a fee.
It may not be Mo that needs to be sold… But if he doesn’t want to stay… I rather him than someone who does want to stay (assuming Sadio does).
Only if you choose to look at it like that. All the evidence I see shows that he’s a bit jaded and burned out after early season heroics and AFCON heartache. If anything he’s been trying too hard to make things happen and find his form, rather than everything clicking naturally like it was before
Did you also factor in that we’re now tending to skip out the Leipzigs, the Southamptons, and trying to grab these players while they’re younger and less costly? Where we might previously have had a need to buy ready-made or near ready-made players, we’re probably going to go for those who are earlier in their development since the very existence of the depth of our team suggests that we don’t need to go for someone who slots in right away.
I’m probably wrong , but it seems to me that once we started hearing all that bollocks about him being the best in the world is about the same time his form began to nosedive.
On form he was at the time people were saying it. No one else was close.
He’s been part of the conversation for most of his time with us
If sport-washing billionaires weren’t in charge of our rivals he’d have at least 3 league winners medals. But no player on the planet is a guarantee of winning a league
To some degree I counted the skipping of the Southamptons… as I counted a number of youth coming through. 2 or 3 of them as core players (“first team regulars”) and another 2 for bench options (taking the Minamino and Origi roles) for a total of 4 to 5.
We can let some players leave on frees but we can’t let ALL our biggest stars do that without repercussions. Out of our 8 players (counting Milner) who will be in their 30s next season… one or two of them will probably need to generate a decent fee.
The most obvious candidates are our forwards with expiring contracts and Mo just stands out due to his reluctance to sign an extension… otherwise he would be untouchable.
This is my view. If the club and Mo can’t agree terms right now, keep him for next season - there will be plenty of time for him to consider what’s on the table from us (Gini had a contract available to him for quite some time) and other clubs. If he leaves for free, hopefully it’s following another season of silverware.
I’m still hopeful that Mo signs a new contract, but the club cannot compete with the clubs backed by sovereign funds - albeit I think it’s less about money, more about length of contract that’s causing issue.
