I can’t think of a reason why we would turn down Mo Salah spending the last 1-2 years of his career on pay as you play. He seems like a really nice person in general, so he probably wouldn’t disrupt the atmosphere at 34 just because he’s not an automatic starter.
Reading the interview and clarification it seems like Mo’s saying that there are 7-8 players continuously playing at a top level well into their thirties hence he should get his bigger contract for a longer duration. That becomes a money thing.
It’s perfectly alright for a top pro like Mo to seek the best salary he can. I find it weirdly idealistic when people start counting cost of living and suggesting that everyone should just be happy with that. That’s not the way our world works anymore.
But it’s disingenous to continually use the media and appeal to fan emotions to turn on the clubs heierarchy to force a contract resolution.
Why would Mo Salah, at 33 or 34 agree to pay as you play when he could play at PSG (like Messi) on a massive wage?
What if he genuinely wants to say at Liverpool, on the same pay for 4 years instead if three? What if he isn’t really telling 442 or any media anything we don’t already know or at least guess?
Edit
Extended duration ultimately means more money paid, the gamble being he is still as prolific then as now.
The issue of how much money isn’t the burning issue.
That is where the “greedy” narrative comes in and maybe it isn’t warranted
My bad, I read ‘pay per week’ as ‘pay as you play.’
I don’t care if he asks for an exorbitant sum, if he thinks that’s his value. That’s between the club and himself. My issue is with him using the media and indirectly the fans to try and put pressure on the club on what should be private negotiations.

Everyone is going to argue that they are one of the elite performers who won’t fade until their mid to late thirties…
But the numbers support the fact that he is likely to decline… Or to lose an important element of his game.
Yes, more and more players last longer … but it is rarely seen in the PL at the most elite level. What then, so we tell the others: Salah will last but you won’t?
It is a policy and we shouldn’t bend for anyone without very exceptional circumstances. And this isn’t one of them.

You got what you wanted Mo, it’s time to sign that contract

Even before the throat grab, he had a different guy put both arms around him from the back.

Yeah I know a slight grab and shirt tug and stuff can be ridden out but how can he escape that.
Was a bit of a joke of a decision considering some of his others.
Jurgen extending is so awesome that Mo signing would be a “letdown”. You can’t steal this thunder Mo, but please try.
This ladies and gentlemen is the difference between somebody signing a contract extension who wants to be here, and somebody holding out for something potentially “bigger” (finances not club statue) coming their way.
Klopp has made Mo look a bit of a cunt really

How do you know that it is about money? Maybe Mo was waiting to see what Klopps plans were

This could grow legs. The way Salah gets manhandled there will be plenty of opportunities.
RE the contract situation.
Give Salah what he wants at the risk of breaking squad harmony
Don’t agree and Salah leaves and top players may think twice.
If that were my decision I might be tempted to go on a motorbike trip across the US.
Now, if only he could get a bit more recognition
