I think Mark Chapman is excellent. The best presenters/pundits aren’t ex-players IMO. He has a curious, inquisitive approach that can produce interesting information beyond the standard cliches. Doesn’t take himself too seriously either.
Kelly Cates is also great and there’s something sexy about her. It’s in the genes.
The presenter role is more an anchor. They need to have enough knowledge to ask intelligent questions of the guests, but it is more important that they can connect with the viewer.
I think that’s why Lineker worked. He was obviously an excellent player, but he has an engaging personality and that is what counts on TV.
Id be reluctant to go fir Alex Scott. She is a good pundit but her hosting skills are rather poor. Just look at how badly Foitball Focus has dived since she has been the host.
I would go for Chapman, Coates or Gabby Logan personally
I am definitely misremembering details, but I clearly recall the common assumption that he would get the job whenever it was that Des stood down as the BBC were openly grooming him for it. I dont remember if he ever guest hosted MotD before Des officially retired, but there were definitely other gigs he was given on things like Grandstand (was Sportsnight still a thing then?) as a trial run.
I think they stopped that after the Savile scandal…
Lineker did “They Think It’s All Over” for a few years and he honed his media skills there.
The BBC do try to bring through new talent. For example, Brian Cox (the physicist) and various Sky at Night presenters were brought in for their subject knowledge and given media training. You can see how they progressed when you see their early appearances.
