Naby KEITA: 2020/21

I hope this is them saving face as Naby has told them his focus is to get fit and have a pre-season with us. I did wonder if Klopp would give him some sort of ultimatum end of this season, I.e. prioritise this club over all, or see you later pal.

There is some player in there, if we can get him fit he’d be a huge asset. Him alongside Fabinho and Thiago is an offensive thing of beauty.

He also gets flak, for not playing for us at all!!!

More than that, after this season especially, I think with every next injury (be it a niggle or serious one), the reaction will be “SELL ASAP!”.

We’d be left with zero players if we got rid of every player who had injuries in his career or time with us.

:joy:

But that’s only the part of it - Keita belongs in the same group of frighteningly talented players who just couldn’t stay fit, like Kewell, Lallana, Sturridge, Matip… It’s not like the people are calling for sales of players like Henderson, Fabinho or Gomez - and they’ve had a fair share of injuries.

I was one of the people who had called for his signature before he was first linked with Liverpool and I can’t help wanting him sold now because, quite frankly, I don’t remember a player who spent an extended period of time with various injury issues, three years in his case, and who managed to get over these issues and play well, at least to a certain extent.

I didn’t see the future at Liverpool for Lallana and Sturridge, no matter how much I hoped for a miracle, and I don’t see it for Keita, unfortunately. Maybe the main reason behind this is the sheer amount of expectation I’ve had of him. Right now, I’m in damage limitation mode - sell and find a player who will be able to contribute.

I know. Yet, a lot of those had multiple seasons/periods when they were fit. Some merit more patience through their quality/talent/age (mix of all that), some less. C’est la vie. In the context of that time, I par example didn’t mind when Kewell got a bit more patience. Didn’t work out.

We made progress and won trophies with some of those players playing an important role. I have a problem (maybe I’m exaggerating on this point!) when we start handing 5-year contracts a little bit everywhere after a success like in Madrid, but we don’t have to exaggerate like they’re never fit. Not being Dirk Kuyt fit all the time doesn’t mean they’re never fit. Not often enough fit, yeah, we can discuss player by player. It’s not like they’re an Abou Diaby level or that we’re signing an injured Aquilani (a move I immediately felt insecure about, Konate is different - not saying it will work) each time.

What can we do (we can do things, but never have 100% control), we can’t change players over night because they have certain injuries (sure, with some players you think if they’re professional enough and doing 100% to prevent them, like Hazard at Real). We’re not the only club with injuries, that’s the part where I think fans sometimes get too dark as if we’re cursed and the only cursed club in the world. We don’t know enough about injuries, about behind the scenes, etc. That’s why I think because we care, think, hope, question and discuss this each day, the reactions are often a bit too paranoid or radical. Like, “leave Virgil at home for a few months doing nothing” or “Konate will be just another Matip, skip him” (I too have certain questions, but it’s far from panic mode).

With a lot of these players and their injuries, it’s really something that happens everywhere. I don’t feel like there’s a constant cloud above us. This season, yeah, we were hit badly (and to a smaller extent were also guilty for it). But by large, I’m pretty happy with our luck in last years (considering the little fact that we’re one of the most intense side in the world and playing in England), let’s not forget what some other players gave us (attacking trio, full backs, some midfielders, etc.). That is a little bit on the other side, unusual to see in modern football. We certainly wouldn’t have achieved what we did under Klopp (considering his style) if our side wasn’t pretty fit most of the time.

11 Ginis! :wink:

@Zoran

Keita has played less than 4000 mins in his three seasons with us.

I get you. We have to be patient with players regarding their fitness or form. He isn’t a young/developing player or a backup. He was brought in, at considerable cost, to be our key player. Isn’t three seasons long enough to judge the usefulness of a key player? What’s more important is, do you feel comfortable/optimistic that Keita will contribute considerable mins (2500 mins) in the next three seasons?

Keita and AOC brings something very different and valuable to our midfield. I would be the happiest person if they (oh, who am I kidding; just one of them would do) make considerable contributions. But do you realistically see that happening?

Despite all the doom and gloom, I feel there’s hope. One of the reasons Keita or AOC weren’t used much in the later (and very crucial) stage of the season might be that Klopp wants to season them properly so that they can be durable in the coming season.

Not saying we must persist with Keita right now. I was speaking more in general, but said that we can discuss each case/player separately.

Yeah, I think it’s coming that point now with Naby (and not since yesterday), especially with him having 2 years left on his deal.

We’re probably open to sell, but the crap little factor in this situation is the current market/climate. We’ll see what we get on the table.

Is that hugo zoff a credible source? The guy can’t differentiate between a WC qualifier and a friendly.
He is the one who stated that Naby was DROPPED.

Well his bio says;

“Africa’s leading sports journalist”- Azerbaijani press.

So I’m no expert but he sounds a big deal.

It is so bad that even his country gave up on him for friendlies!

that’s so vague

an azerbaijani press (not named) said he was Africa’s leading sports journalist. africa is not a country btw

Never said Africa is a country either :slight_smile:

what do you mean by “it”?

not you. i meant the supposed press who said that.

The bio is a joke / satire.

so people here are seriously reacting to a joke of an account

The conundrum with Keita is that he only has two years left on his contract, and if we give him another year, whether he flops again or finds the form he is capable of, he only has one year left and is firmly in stay put another year and leave on a free territory.

Whatever happens, whether that’s sell him, or commit to him long term (with a new contract) it needs to happen this summer.

Personally I think if we can get £25m for him, we should pull the trigger.
