Naby KEITA: 2021/22

Such a strange player. First half he really was excellent, second half he just walked around for the most part. Wonder what Klopp was telling him after the final whistle.

ā€œHey, Naby la, we’re part-exchanging you for Bellingham next summer. I can give you refresher lessons in German for a nominal charge if you like.ā€

I was wondering that myself. He hugged Naby coming off but then after final whistle seemed to be in a serious conversation.

On basis of 250k pay per 90mins on pitch, perhaps?

Watch how quickly he retires from international football if that’s the case.

Is this a fucking wind up?

Why? He’s a good player, the only question around him is simply just fitness. Makes perfect sense, especially at the right wages.

When you say he is a good player what are you basing that on.

For me he has had less impact at the club than Ox and Shaq, and probably around equal to Minamino.

Why would we be looking to offer him an extension to his contract and increasing his wages?

I get thƩ thought that he was decent in Germany but has never really looked like being 80% of that whilst here and a ridiculous injury record to boot

When he’s played this season , he’s been good. Not sensational but quietly doing what Klopp wants of his midfielders.

What’s the alternative to giving him a new contract ? Letting him get into his last year and leave for buttons , and then having to spend big on a replacement ? Or even worse , letting him run it right down and leave for nothing ?

It makes sense to me to protect our investment and just hope he stays fit and keeps doing well when called on.

Ye I take your point but it’s the ā€œhope he stays fitā€œ part that I don’t think will happen.

Really hope I am wrong but for 55m it really has not worked out has it.

He’s basically had a cascade of bad injuries because he had one, and was rushed back too early by the Guinea manager. I think he’s been fit since January at least, but was just left out so (a) he could have a specialised training regime tailored to ease his recovery and break that cycle, and (b) we didn’t want to destabilise the team.

As for his abilities, I think recency bias plays a strong part. Statistically speaking he’s almost on the level of Virgil in terms of how well we do with him in the team and how poorly we do when we don’t have him in.

It’s a gamble that seems to be based on very flimsy evidence from where I’m sitting. I hope the club know what they are doing!

Yeah, because they’ve clearly shown themselves to be utterly clueless over the last few years.

Nobody wants him to start bossing games more that me, that goes for all of our players mind, I don’t have an agenda against any of them and genuinely want them all to be world beaters when wearing our badge. However some have a lot of making up to do and have not fulfilled their potential. Naby unfortunately is head of that list.

You said it not me!
I don’t think that was deserved. What’s your problem with hoping?

Nonsense to say he’s had around the same impact as Minamino. Why do we hyperbolise so much?

Well we’ll probably find out soon enough. He’s been given every help this year to improve his fitness. If he makes it to Xmas with no problems , then we could be looking good. If he breaks down before then he’s most probably just injury prone and that ain’t gonna change.

It’s fun and stresses the point and most of all leads to those wonderful futile arguements we all love so much.

I hope he stays fit.

I disagree. All it takes is a Jordan Pickford for that to happen…
