NBA/Basketball Thread

Agree completely. Plus Duke had already tried to win the Kentucky one-and-done way, and has been reaping what it sowed.

With one and dones, the transfer portal, and NIL, college football and hoops are sadly unwatchable in my view.

That’s why I’m fortunate to be a Chicago Bears fan.

What’s up with this new trend of horrible colour schemes on NbA courts!! The Timberwolves have various eyesore shades of lime green. Ugh!!

NBA started an in-season cup, modeled a bit like the FA cup (as an idea, not really the same in practice). The weird color scheme is to let the viewer know it’s a cup game. Every Tuesday and Friday or something like that for a block of time in early season are ‘cup games’. It still counts as regular season game, but also as a cup game. Each team is in a division (nobody really remembers which team is in a division with whom), highest point total from division gets to play in quarter finals, then semi finals and finals are a weekend event in Las Vegas.

Has the NBA been taken over by FIFA?

That is the only logical explanation.

Just heard an NBA coach say he has to “managise” court time for a player

CNN have for some reason done a new documentary on the life of Kobe that is getting a lot of press promotion. Remember that every time you hear “Mamba mentality” presented as if it is a good thing, the thing that made him such a competitor and winner, that it emerged as his response to credible rape accusations*. His entire legal defense was to use his power and influence to make the accuser’s life hell, bad enough that she would eventually walk away from the suit, which is exactly how he ended up getting away with it. The attitude he took on wanting to destroy her as a person is where Mamba came from. This is what people praise when they talk about that killer instinct he took onto the court with him. What a winner. Cunt.

*this is a very generous description for Kobe of the strength of the accusations.

Majority of people I talk to in bars aren’t even aware of accusations.

If they happened post-me-too he’d be vilified. I remember (I was living in the US at the time) that it was more used against him as Kobe being the butt of jokes (see Chappelle’s Show skit). The media briefings were well managed. And eventually people moved on to the next controversy.

The woman ultimately walking away from the case and the criminal conviction falling through, because Kobe used his resources to destroy this woman’s life, was very convenient for everyone. You know, innocent until proven guilty so now lets all pretend that the things we know happened didnt happen.

Oh look, his kids are court side. What a great family man Mamba is.

What the fuck are Dallas doing?

Dallas?! WTF are the lakers doing?! Davis is a proven winner and has no dietary concerns unlike Luka

Kyrie out for the season, eh? Who’d have predicted that?

So a month after trading Doncic, claiming to have concerns about his durability, both the player they traded him for - Davis - and the player they picked over him - Irving - are out for the season.

Meanwhile Doncic is dropping 30pts a game for the Lakers. :joy:

And, amazingly, turning himself into a better than competent defensive player.

Reddick is quietly showing himself to have been a savy hire. Of course the standard at the Lakers is title or bust so he’s still up against it in terms of being a “success” there, but a lot of people seem to be having to eat some crow over that.

They were in the fucking finals last year. Is Harrison trying to kill the franchise? I don’t get it at all.

Watching March Madness and strongly feel like basketball would be a much more fluid and entertaining watch if we just got rid of timeouts.

Basketball is constantly talking about why people aren’t watching anymore but I think MM has made me understand - its just a bad sport. It should be really cool, very athletic, very skilful and super fast with lots of interesting defensive rotations and offensive patterns.

Instead it hints at those things while being a frustrating stop-start affair, a foul every 15 seconds followed by a long break for the free throw shooter to get ready, some of the softest players in sport (amazing to me that Americans go on about soccer players diving but are fine with the antics of basketball players), a seemingly endless number of timeouts, close games coming down to boring foul/free throw/3pt contests which feels like it invalidates the entire game before it.

I’d change about half the rules of the game, it’s rubbish.

All that AND the constant squeaking of their shoes.

Gets right on my tits.

The NBA has become a gimmick league, where everyone is spamming 3 pointers with no defence played. Load management and stars teaming up has dissolved the sense of competition, at least in the regular season.

Try the Euroleague instead. Much better flow and intensity. It even has referee controversy to match its football equivalent. It is the closest thing available to the golden years of the NBA between the 80s and the 90s.
