When everything is a must watch game nothing is. Real vs Liverpool should always be a top game. When it’s towards the end of a group stage and neither team can qualify for the QFs, it becomes a pointless exercise with no penalty for losing (when it’s a closed ship and youre not fighting against relegation).

This new format is scheduled to take-off from the 2024/25 season. So three more seasons; 2021/22, 2022/23 and 2023/24, under the existing format. I wonder how the football landscape look like in three years time. Do you see more changes to this format?

I’m surprised it’s not coming in sooner, might help us initially if we continue to compete in Europe under Klopp even if we don’t make it this time (though I think we will probably make the Europa at least).

The format is we’ll play 10 games in the first phase
None of those clubs will be English.
The top 8 in that league table will qualify for the round of 16 and teams positioned 9-24 will play off and the 8 winners of the play offs will join the first 8, in the round of 16.
So basically in the first phase we’ll go from playing 6 games to 10.

And why not? I can’t get angry at Bayern for being shrewd at what they did.
It doesn’t matter whether they would have joined or not, they knew the significance of their brand, they knew eventually a European Superleague without Germany would have looked odd that in between its formation and its any success a window would have existed.
They’ve played it perfectly, if this was John W Henry we would be lauding how shrewd they were, because if I’m honest they have football people throughout that club who understand it.
Don’t get mad because they played a blinder and we frankly sucked. Sad thing is I’ve seen at least twice that we were seen by the likes of Perez and Glazer as vital to the project and yet didn’t see own value and now that’s been blown.

Do you know, Rummenigge and Agnelli floated the concept of ESL, five years ago. There’s a post with a link floating around somewhere in TAN. The similarities with their proposal is erringly freakish.

The more games, the more $/€/£/¥…for tv rights, the more the public will have to pay to watch. It’s all about increasing revenues for the rich. The more things change the more they stay the same. Where is the “puke” emoji?
