New European Super League

They have more of a history in European football, but they also play in a far less competitive league.

So playing in the ESL will make them stronger and improve their fan base!

This is the lead story on Radio 4ā€™s flagship Today programme this morning.

Serious stuff.

Making ESL more concrete is just the next turn of the thumbscrew. UEFA has little option but to give into the pressure and go further in the CL rejig than it had planned.

I think this is bollocks. After extensive research (Wikipedia), from what I can see the ECA is not part of UEFA but is recognised by UEFA. In addition, it seems that we were never members of it anyway. According to the Wikipedia page the only English clubs that are members are Man U, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Everton, Newcastle and Leicester.

I also looked at the ECAā€™s 2020 Statutes and there are limits on the number of clubs eligible for ordinary membership of the ECA per association. Therefore, itā€™s not necessary for all clubs to be members of the ECA in order to be eligible to play in UEFA competitions. Or so it seems.

Is there a lawyer available?

As it stands, the clubs arenā€™t fucking off their national leagues or their cup competition. As it stands everyone was up in arms about the Champions League reform, including the fans. As it stands, Uefa are the only one getting the shaft. All this outrage, hyperbole, disgust and nobody really knows exactly what this means for the Club domestically. Youā€™re all been led by the nose by Fifa, Uefa, the FA, the media, pundits who have to by default tarnish and destroy any sort of reform as they relish the status quo because itā€™s a cash cow without equal.

Project Big Picture was vilified as greed and dismissed out of hand with everyone going absolutely mental at it when it did have viable tenets in practice and the same thing is happening now. The media is shouting from the rooftops, the fan groups are shouting from the rooftops. I would like to know what exactly is disgusting everyone when everyone also rails against Uefa, the PL, corruption, incompetent refs, VAR. To those who are disgusted and say this is it for you, please tell me what youā€™re disgusted about? The Premier League will still carry on, the clubs are not binning off their domestic comps. The only people wanting to actually kick them out are Fifa, Uefa and the FA. So the derby wil still be a fixture as will United and Arsenal and all the other juicy ones like Burnley (okay maybe not that one) and if Stoke comes back then we can always see if our players can do it on a cold Wednesday night away.

Is it the money? Money took over the game almost 3 decades ago now so to label it greed is a tad late, the game left us ages ago. The formation of the PL fucked over alot of people at the time, for those of you around then did you invoke the spirit of managers past universally condemning Sky and the clubs and their greed? Everyone nowadays just wants to be outraged, to vent, to moan about how things were better, how things should stay the same and also expect us to be competing at the highest level week in, week out, expect players and investment but not on player x but player y.

With the Super League the clubs are going to have the power and will be able to negotiate their own deals in some fashion and imo their own platforms, streaming outlets, Amazon etc are going to take a huge slice of the pie and while the traditional broadcasters will also likely get their slice they are not going to get the complete control that they have been used to. The outrage and disgust is basically on behalf of Fifa, Uefa, the PL and all the media houses that have been a huge part of the commercialisation of the game and responsible for the huge inflation and corruption that is prevalent in the game as it is today. But yeah, let the shouting down, without any idea of the bigger picture, of any institution sticking its head above the parapet continue long and proud because well, itā€™s just not cricket is it?

shall we conduct a history test to see who qualifies to join the cool kids club??

If this goes aheadā€¦Iā€™ll be very disappointed. I canā€™t believe weā€™re heavily involved in this. Itā€™s a disgrace.
Iā€™m with @GNev2 on this. Iā€™ll never pay an interest into the Super League & Iā€™ll learn to like another sport.

Iā€™m really not interested in a super league as a sporting competition at all. I think itā€™ll be boring compared to the current format and I donā€™t see it lasting.

Still, Iā€™m struggling to see why I should suddenly be outraged by this particular cash grab by clubs over all the others. Is it just because Sky and Uefa are getting fucked over?

I certainly wonā€™t be paying 50 quid to go to an ESL game in the future and I would imagine many will feel the same. I think itā€™ll get milked for a couple of years before all going to pot.

Iā€™ve read that statement and I feel sick to my stomach.

I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever felt like this about Liverpool Football Club.

are they cool??

No, donā€™t delete your account DoG, you stay here right now, we fight another day,ā€œtogether, we are strongerā€.

All the politicians from all the parties are against this proposal!

Not only that but the European Super League sounds shit.

What do they think will happen to clubs from 5-20th 4 games in when they realise they canā€™t win the competition but can win their domestic leagues. Itā€™s gonna become league cup-esqe with lower placed clubs selecting weaker teams.

Plus we are going to be playing Englandā€™s other 5 traitors 4 times each, every year. Fucking hell how to ruin football

I hate the the thought of playing the same teams over and over.
Agree say if we got off to a poor start and it was obvious we wouldnā€™t win it then the whole thing is pointless especially with no relegation or promotion.

From what I am understanding, all 6 clubs will be kicked out of the EPL, so they will be just playing this ESL. So, thatā€™s us lot not watching our boys beat Crystal Palace and Burnley then!

Also Iā€™d be interested to know, if these owners sell up or in the case of Perez are removed do they remain the board members?

Perez I assume has just made himself President for life.

I have no doubt at some point one of these teams will end up in a relegation dog fight domestically or a few years of really barren returns, will they just sit there getting whipped for 10-15 years.

Also the whole promotional stuff looks like it was taken from La Liga TV so expect the TV channel to be European Super League TV.

Have I read right that Bayern and PSG havenā€™t signed up?
Can look at it two waysā€¦itā€™s either brave and they are being respectful to their own leaguesā€¦orā€¦they like cruising to their own title every year and fear the competition.

This is where a super league falls down - they have invited 6 from uk but both Spurs and Arsenal (who could be 11th come end of the week) have been invited. Whatā€™s so super about those teams? Even with no defenders (and Adrian in 1 game) weā€™ve taken max points from those games this season. I guess itā€™s just who richest.

The whole CL revamp sounds utterly shit as well. More shit teams in it.

Dortmund have refused as well, I think the problem with them is the fan ownership, PSG probably now see this as a route to the CL, no doubt they will come around but Germany is going be a hard one to get on board without some movement, and anyhow Bayern just buy the best Bundesliga players they donā€™t need a Super League.

I do wonder if itā€™s something to do with money with PSG, they donā€™t actually need it and their name is big anyhow, the likes of Spurs are just jumping on this because effectively itā€™s the last cart out of town.

As someone said theyā€™ve paid for their stadium in an afternoon.

All the more reason to get behind it then.

Correct wonder why The Torys are against this? Nothing to do with their right wing pal Murdoch and his beloved sky sports about to lose a load of money.
