So many places this could have gone but maybe here is best…
- guns don’t kill people…
- dangerous breeds…
- permits; for dog, for gun, for the dog to carry…
p.s. the yahoo comments section is always interesting in one way or another

I’d make some comment about gun safety, except our village have just had their annual Schützenfest, which is a traditional celebration for marksmen, combining firesrms with vast quantities of beer.
I mean, what could possibly go wrong?
Since they’ve just had it and the assumption thus being they’ve all survived in good health bar a few hangovers, I’m going to go with… nothing? ![]()
In a similar vein, once a w/e I usually go my (gentle) run through the forest and around the village and every couple of week there is an older gentleman with a shotgun that walks around - presumably looking for something to shoot… I’m always a bit wary and try to steer clear. This is half in jest but ultimately I do feel uncomfortable around guns and especially when coupled with the thought of the chasseur diminishing in sight, aim and general wherewithal’ ness…
In fairness, they probably have more beer related injuries, and the guns are just hunting rifles. It’s not like the Americans who wonder around with ArmaLites like it’s 1970s West Belfast.
There are hunters in the forest where we live (generally hunting deer or wild boor) and I really hate guns. What I do find in Germany is that they take safety and training very seriously, especially with the shooting clubs.
It still makes me nervous, though. I was filling up with petrol a few weeks ago, glanced up and saw that the chap on the opposite pump had a holstered pistol. My heart lept for a moment until I realised that he was a police officer.
Hunting dog and it saw a duck?
The way books are consumed it’s exploded as a medium.
You talk like it’s the music industry. There is a reason why places like Waterstones never saw the same decline as HMV
HMV and the like declined because the physical medium moved on to the ether. Likewise, books will likely end as a medium. I can imagine a (not so distant) future where books are consumed purely in audio format - once that happens there is no need for Waterstones. With the arrival of AI, there is a very real possibility that this is accelerated and eventually even the need for authors may become perfunctory…
I think it’s proven resilient and will continue to.
There are still plenty of record stores around, selling vinyl and cd.
1st world niche markets… compared to from the 50s to the 90s the vinyl market is greatly reduced. The CD marker had an even shorter window… Streaming is where most of the music is consumed.
I know that, still plenty of physical places to go to browse or buy records. Since these places are still on most high streets or shopping centres then they still have a place and haven’t gone the way of HMV or Virgin.
I think it will take a generation or 2 before all these thing find their place but they’ll never go completely and will still find a decent volume of people to stay afloat.
I think there may several thousand tourists having panic attackes in Japan on Wednesday morning.
Regarding the Nationwide Simultaneous Test Broadcast of the Disaster Prevention Broadcast System: On Wednesday, June 3, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications will conduct a nationwide simultaneous test of the information dissemination system using the Japan Emergency Alert System (J-Alert).
・ Date and Time: Wednesday, June 3, 2026, around 11:00 a.m.
・ About the National Instant Alert System (J-Alert)
A system in which the national government transmits emergency information regarding earthquakes, tsunamis, armed attacks, etc., to local governments via satellites and other means, automatically activating municipal disaster prevention public address systems.
I expect it’ll be like the earthquake warning alert; everybody’s phones will make loud noises and strong vibrations. Should be fun watching watching tourists dive under the nearest table.
We get those in Germany as well. I always forget when the official test days are and get a fright when my phone goes off and the air-raid sirens sound.
Having said that, I’ve had a few genuine alerts over the last weekend related to severe weather, which is quite useful.
We never get these. To the extent I actually have to go on youtube and watch one of those nuclear/asteroid type videos to give my nervous system a jolt periodically.
Threads? Just remember, you can’t unsee Threads.

It would be fun if this was the alert:
