I’d suggest kingdoms of amalur as a rpg game with a very good combat system.
But the fucking grind. And the story. Rips whatever heart that is there out of the game.

Yeah, KoA was quite fun to a point, but I found any story or dialogue totally unengaging, and the game itself just dragged on too long.
Previously tonight playing the game King of Dragon Pass (Runequest-Glorantha setting)
Worshippers of the horse god Elmal came to my Tula and demanded to be payed to enact a fertility rite for my horse herd, and then insisted it had to be in secret and only attended by initiates of Elmal. So I only heard the sounds, while waiting for these “holy men” to get out of the barn…
This cost me a lot of money and cows. But my clan did gain magic out of this.
Fucking hilarious scene to be frank!
Never heard of this game but now I’m intrigued.
King of Dragon Pass. Very oldd school. I only bought it because I am learning the Glorantha setting (it’s an old game). But it’s good. Just not “modern and fast”
veilgard doesn’t look promising at all. Sure the combat might be good , but the dialogues etc between the characters are dire AF.
Will be a shame if I’ve to gie this one a skip but the dialogues are really bad.
Yeah. I’ve been watching a number of streamers play this and most of them have been critical of the dialogue. Although, one guy I saw said it’s no different to that in other Bioware games.
I’ve got too many games now to play it but will probably pick it up at some point down the road or play it on game pass if it gets added next year.
Veilguard is the first single-player Bioware game (ie basically everything except Anthem) I’ve not bought on release, and as things stand I don’t really have plans to ever play it, which makes me a bit sad.
But that sadness is mainly because of the Bioware that has been lost - it’s the same company in name only due to all the people that have left it - rather than its current incarnation. Veilguard honestly seems mainly marketed at children and activists, and as someone who generally tries to steer clear of any culture war conflict, it’s saying something that everything I’ve seen and watched on it I find massively off-putting.
I think more so than all the stuff around gender is the insistence on using modern-day terminology for everything, in a medieval fantasy world. As well as being preachy in how it’s portrayed, it also just feels hugely lazy in terms of writing, and immersion-breaking.
I am playing that game. haven’t paid for it.
Don’t see myself picking it up even if it comes on a giveaway.
I’ve been through Dooms, Quakes, Farcrys, Diablos and the odd war one. Any tips on what I should look at next? Borded of the latest Farcry now, fancy something else but the choice is ridiculous. Any ideas appreciated
I’ve not played it, but apparently Witchfire is incredible, still in early access though:
Otherwise, the next big game I’ve got my eye on is Stalker 2, comes out in a week’s time.
I’d say the Metro games could well be worth a look as well, the first couple are more linear story-driven affairs, for Exodus they went open world.
I’m guessing you have already played the Ghost Recon games?
No, war ones were COD.Are they decent? Stalker 2 as above looks very promising.
Yes, I think they were fairly popular. Especially if you like the stealthy side of gameplay. I’ve not really played them though.
Stalker 2 is definitely one of the most highly anticipated titles of the year. I’m looking forward to playing that. I never got to play the original titles.
Resident Evil 4 ?
About veilguard.
The Good.
The combat is more reminiscent of dragon age 2 which isn’t a bad thing. I prefer the combat system in 2 anyway compared to origins and inquisition.
The visuals are pretty breathtaking.
So far atleast , there do not seem to be any outright reused stages.
The Bad.
None of the companions have any depth to them. You want someone like Varric , Leliana , Alistair… No chance. Everyone is mundane. I suppose the customary guy who is possessed by a spirit is okay, but we’ve had that before.
No dialogues , no comic interactions of note. Nothing.
Absolutely no link to the previous Dragon age games except some cameos here and there. They’ve taken the biggest dump possible on DA-origins.
Not spoiling the story for people who don’t want to know , but that’s pretty much the biggest drawback , apart from the dialogues.
Half way to acquiring all the companions and I want it to end already.
It feels like the dialogues for this game were written by a bunch of tranquils.
Spoilers. You’ve been warned.
Remember how the archdemon was the big all encompassing evil in dragon age origins and actually doing all the quests was pivotal to saving the world / finishing the game.
Turns out , There are 2 of them here in this game and they are little else apart from stage bosses.
Witcher 2 and especially 3 if you’ve never tried the series. 1 is ok too but bit dated now. Remake of 1 in the works at the moment.
Incidentally, the Metro games are currently all 90% discounted on Steam, you can get all three for about a fiver…
For retro gaming/Castlevania nerds, the first 8 games are on Epic for free for the next 2 days:
