Post Match: Ajax v Liverpool (UCL 21/10/20 8pm)

3 points, clean sheet, one of the hardest group stage games out of the way.

Everyone did relatively well. Really liked the look of Jota and Taki. Fabinho showing how good he can be at CB, which has made me feel a bit better after the Virg news.

Concerned about the lack of cut and thrust from both Bobby and Trent at the moment. Seems like both are still in pre-season mode.

The sooner Alisson is back, the better. I’m done with Adrian - i accept he’s okay, and that he’s not able to come on and replace the best keeper in the world at the same level. But my nerves can’t take it. I’d rather Kheller given a go. Or better still, stick Fab in goal - he can do anything.

If we can beat Shef United this weekend, it really will be a mood lifter, not just for us fans, but also Klopp and the team - they are still mentally down by the looks of it.

Basically with a lack of fans, the team that’s most likely to win is the one which has all 11 players switched on throughout the match.

For Liverpool the ‘switched on’ people seem to be Mane/Salah/Robbo…the switched off people seem to be Adrian/Gomez/TAA with the rest somewhere along the spectrum between the two.

If any manager can drill a sense of concentration into a player its Klopp (and Bielsa).

Not very worried. We keep hashing out clean sheets and small wins and the team morale will be back.

I do not understand how you can accuse Gomez of not being switched on last night. He was consistent and positive. He and Fabinho were our best two players . Must admit I agree that Trent seems to be costing at the moment . The injuries to Allison and VVD and to a lesser extent Thiago, seem to have cracked the confidence of many. Hopefully we can get a good performance on Sunday to lift everyone again.

I agree about Adrian, every time the ball goes anywhere near him, I have an anxiety attack!

Thought it was a masterstroke by Klopp to swap out the front 3 as it kept our pressure up in the forward press and enabled us to continue to defend from the front.

Fairly solid Adrian still makes me nervous, good save though. Fabinho was immense at the back again.

I think I must have watched a different game to some on here. I don’t think we were unlucky at all. As I remember it they had a great chance 1st half which Adrian saved and a shot that hit the post in the 2nd half. Other than that I don’t recall much. If we’d been a bit sharper in the final 3rd I’d have fancied us to score a couple more and make it more comfortable.
On Adrian, thought he did ok but he fails to get any distance on his punches - just sort of gets it to the edge of the box and sooner or later someone will just smack one back past him.

What about Millie?
… and Fabinho? you don’t clear a goal bound shot off the line like that if your not switched on.
As for Salah perhaps he’s inbetween, he made a great effot however how does your main striker miss that sitter if he’s switched on?
Looked like a team effort to me I can not even fault Gini so there you go. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

It appears to me for all the world, that Gomez is trying to shepherd the ball into the penalty area so that Adrian can use his hands and pick it up.

I think it’s indicative of how little confidence the defence has in Adrian’s abilities, especially with the ball at his feet.

As per usual, Adrian is too slow to react and come out for the ball. We were fortunate that he only gave away a throw-in; it could have gone for a corner and/or Gomez could have been injured.

The only person I can think of, that is more reluctant than Adrian to come out of his box, is Dracula. :bat:

You and me, both.

Nah. Didn’t accuse anyone, just made an observation and shared an opinion. I said the players that ‘seem to be switched off.’ Also I was talking about the 4-5 games thus far not a particular night.

The point of my post was exactly that it’s not a question of ability, it’s about who can maintain their focus and stay mentally present in the moment and for how long. For example, I don’t believe for a second that Shakhtar’s B team is better than Real Madrid’s A team, but they were more focused and present and so they won on the night. It’s a different game entirely than this time last year.

In last evening’s game I thought the entire back line was fairly solid. Adrian made some great spontaneous saves and he had a big part to play in the win albeit with shaky moments. Firmino and Jones looked switched off and they got subbed off.

Klopp is doing the absolute right thing by going crazy at people whose concentration seems to be slipping. Cool customers like Zidane or Ole who stay quiet on the touchline are going to miss out. It’s the crazies like Klopp, Bielsa, Mourinho who I think will get by.

Rhys Williams remind me of the Reese chocolate…

Thanks. It was that wider angle and preceding seconds that I hadn’t seen. When the ball comes over ideally you’d want Adrian to be available for a simple pass that he can then send long but Adrian comes out to the ball.

That rather makes Gomez’s mind up that he can no longer pass to Adrian and, therefore, shepherding the ball to allow Adrian to collect it with his hands is the next best option (other than simply knocking it out for a throw in). With Adrian coming out to meet the ball you’d have to assume he’s coming to collect it with his hands, there’s no other reason for him to be there. That he then doesn’t do this is ridiculous…can certainly see why Gomez is frustrated here.

Fabinho showed last night the drop off from Van Dijk to him is like tiny compared to the drop between Adrian and Alisson. Once Ali is back I think we will steam the league.

Count me in. :innocent:

Getting Thiago back would help enormously too.

Perhaps, my initial thoughts were that Gomez anticipated passing the ball back to Adrian however Adrian then made a faltering run to intercept the ball.
Gomez had full control of the situation with multiple options until Adrian stepped on his toes.
Just poor communication and poor reaction from Adrian. Does it need to go any further than that?

oh! a Hendo Thiago double pivot with Jota, Mané, Salah and Firmino up top in a 4231. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
Why o we need soo many midfielders?

Yeah that was all on Adrian. The guy comes out when he should stay on his line and stays on his line when he should come out. Decision making is hopeless. Made one good reaction save and his reflexes are excellent but the defence simply don’t trust him and with good reason. It’s Mignolet and Karius all over again.

The problem with the defense losing trust with the keeper is there is usually no way back. One mistake in even 2-3 games and you as defense start questioning yourselves on the decisions on the plays involving the keeper, whether you should pass back or not, allow him to come for the ball or not and so on.

And it’s such an unforgiving position that mistakes are usually amplified and could cause panic for subsequent 10-15 minutes, which may then end up in conceding a goal. The goal may not be down to any goalkeeping error as such directly. But physiologically the players might have that in back of their minds that the entire sequence of mistakes was originated at that particular point and is somewhere the cause, cause we as fans surely do.

Best moment of the match Fabinho clearing off the line, talk about inspector gadget! There was also Millie ‘time wasting’ about time we did that to someone.
Worst moment of the match well as it was so early on Adrian fucking up with Gomez and that shot that hit the post (I wonder if anyone has noticed yet the significance of that? What do you say @AnfieldRdDreamer?)
Poor game under poor conditions however i really enjoyed it. Loved how we shut up shop in the last 20 minutes soo professional. Gomez and Fabinho kept a good line (Matip would have been 3 meters behind leaving us open). Salah well he really is putting in an effort these days isn’t he just needs to get his shots off quicker. How I love own goals for us, a completely mishit shot from Mané causing havoc.
