All being said about run ins being easier and so on, they drew to Palace and we beat Arsenal this week, I assume the win probability pointed to a reversal
Merson said that nothing had changed from the result last night, which is technically true, but I donât think he really knew what he was basing that comment on. It seems he didnât understand that City and Liverpool could both have the title in their hands.
City dropping points was what put it into our hands.
I felt like once we got our offside trap properly tuned it was never a danger. Donât know where the sense that Alexander-Arnold was poor is coming from. There was maybe one moment when Martinelli managed to make it past him and Matip, but nobodyâs perfect. And even then, we shielded it perfectly such that he had no good options. The shots taken statistic shows it perfectly.
It was quite embarrassing really. Merson was really struggling with the notion that the title is in both Liverpool and Cityâs hands. Souness did well to just drop it.
Thank you, as I said I didnât watch it due to a number of issues but yeah I noticed it in the semi final.
Do wonder if it helped that we scored after the 20-25 minute in that one, seems Arsenal didnât produce much in this as they didnât in the semi final.
Yea they are improved but the gap is still obvious.
Thats what I think of when we are playing. A python kills its prey by suffocating its victim. Each time the animal breathes out, it uses the opportunity while the lungs are empty to squeeze and compress until the victim is dead.
Thats how we play. A neutral may look at the first half and question how good we are as Arsenal âdominatedâ us, probably according to them. But Iâm not sure we were actually threatened once. We waited for the opportunity to put on the squeeze, and bam bam, in a matter of minutes, our prey was dead. I would love to see the stats of how often we have scored reasonably quickly after the first. I would think its much more than in previous years.
This team is so mature. We were once a team that went hell for leather for 90 minutes, now we lull the opposition then kill the game in a matter of minutes. Sure we have the capacity to play like we did 3 years ago, but why do that when we are now a team competing in 4 comps? I think I am happier with how we play now than when we were pulling Cityâs pants down a few years ago.
Trent is the best right back in the world. I think previously I said he is a combination of Cafu - the prototype attacking right back; and Beckham - who made a whole career from his right foot.
With the emphasis on attacking play, as evidenced by the huge amount of assists he gets, occasionally a well organized opponent, with the right weapon at their disposal, can give us a game down Trentâs side.
This is absolutely not to say Trent cannot defend, because he can. But commentators are not known for giving any context to what is happening.
My take last night is that Trent was a bit deeper than normal, and rightly so, because Martinelli is a bloody good player. Fast, direct, good dribbler, tenacious. If he went up against the best defensive right back in the world he would give him problems, because he is a good player.
He dribbled past Trent once or twice and used his pace as well. On one occasion he went past a couple and it looked very threatening. He also had that shot where he opened his body and just sent it beyond the far post.
The narrative from the pundits is all wrong. How about⌠Martinelli, what an exciting player he looks? (Thatâs fair). And then TAA, adapted his game slightly in order to help contain him on the night. Talk of his lack of defensive nous is misplaced (thatâs fair too).
To me it seems like some sort of Strange Magic, probably conceived of by an Evil Woman. Definitely some (Mr) Blue sky thinking involved in putting it together.
Inarguably we were not good with the ball. I think it was really only a period of about 20 minutes though where we struggled, but it was viewed as being the entire first half because the first 25 minutes are always viewed as a catastrophe with we havenât already put the game to bed. However, even during this period of struggle we had them fairly well contained. This Arsenal side has pace and can ping the ball around nicely and so had some nice patterns that would have roused the crowd, but it still always felt like the back 4 and Ali had it under control. There was one possible exception with Martinelli getting to the byline and looking for a cut back, a very similar situation from which Robbo set up Bobby, but we defended it well. It was definitely a situation in which we needed to improve with the ball in the second half, but that is the beauty of this side. They donât panic when theyâre not on top and have enough leaders who when there is the chance to catch their breathe can figure out what to do differently to get the game going.
Weâre winning games like last night in moments as opposed to dominating the game. Control the game, not giving up chances, wait for the right moment and bang. Great weâre back to being able to win in different ways.
Martinelli was fantastic for them. No shame in saying Trent found it difficult against him in 1v1 situations as he got round him a few times but ultimately led to nothing. Thatâs more on the rest of the arsenal team than the end product from Martinelli.
Honestly I thought Merson was gonna have smoke coming out of his ears trying to argue in futility with Souness with Carra smirking away in his other side. His foundation started running
Not sure if Sky ever offered it over here, but I remember Fox Sports in Aus years ago offered something similar and also offered key player focus so 1 camera would just focus on a certain player for the game which was interesting as you could get a really good understanding of what that player was doing throughout the game.
From memory I think that only lasted 1 season, so maybe it wasnât something viable in terms of cost to numbers using it
