I didn’t follow the pre-match thread religiously during the game but I don’t recall posters regularly laying into him but I may have just missed those posts?
I know I had a go at him when he was lackadaisically jogging practically in the Right Midfield position (wrong side of Fab) as Villa cut a ball behind Virg on the left - all because of the space created by not having a midfielder on that side of the pitch. He was meant to be playing on the left. It must have been in the first 5 mins of the game.
I recall him tightening up a lot after that and I thought he did well with the ball at his feet. None of the midfielders covered themselves in glory early on so I would find it strange that Curtis would be singled out.
Agree with these comments and if we have a player who you think missed an opportunity of a killer or good forward pass that would be Robbo whose passing range is limited because of his poor right foot. Not saying he is not a good player because he is but he would be even better if he was prepared to use his right foot more often. It is really only a matter of practice. Obviously he was not playing last night so maybe wrong thread.
Still quite a few people who don’t understand how we use our two attacking midfielders. They’re there to facilitate the attack and cover the full backs, not be the focal point. Thiago is elite at it but even then he’s not expected to be the creative driving force in the team, he can do it, but it isn’t his job. Keita and Jones aren’t as good as Thiago but they have the same role.
Our attacks are almost always focused through our wingers and wing backs.
Jones and Keita both did perfectly fine last night.
I think the players’ culpability gets overlooked too often in these conversations of the ref losing control of the game. What I saw was Villa players going down easily, staying down and Moss ignoring it and letting the game play on. I think that perceived unfairness is the basis of their frustration at the refereeing, whether justified or not. And while it result in a game looking like its chippy it at least gives the side with the ball the opportunity to play a bit more and not have the game stopped so frequently due to gamesmanship. The villa players have the option fairly early on to keep trying and getting more frustrated or to realize they’re going to have to actually play. If they chose the former, as they seemed to do several times, that’s not the ref losing control of the game.
Wobbly last 10 or so but for the most part well deserving of the win.
Not sure how long Fabinho was struggling for as he only seemed to hold his leg immediately before he went off but he had a dodgy 5 or 10 minutes before that.
I’ve been wondering about Hendo this year but yesterday he came on and we immediately looked assured everywhere.
As for their goal…all on the linesman…there’s about 30 seconds between the offside and the goal - too long for VAR to chalk that off for me that
If Jones has a future with Liverpool I reckon it is as a false 9 as he is a natural successor to Firmino. He has a great ability to receive and control balls in the final third, great close control, the ability to create a bit of space in one-on-ones and can shoot as well. Yes he has to work on his overall (team) game and it will also depend on his attitude and staying injury free but he is a talent and potentially a game changer.
And let’s face it, Moss has every reason to want to stop the game and have a little breather. Fair play to him. If I was blowing out of my arse like he was, I’d have my whistle out at every opportunity.
So moss is retiring end of season, a few seasons too late I’m afraid, Gerrard had villa and their fans well up for the game last night, I wonder will they be the same v city.
Don’t think VAR can get involved with that. Different phase of play…
The starting point for a phase of play that leads to a goal or penalty incident will be limited to the immediate phase and not necessarily go back to when the attacking team gained possession.
I heard that when Jon Moss waddles about the pitch…
he is always asking the players if his laces have come undone and will they let him now if they do…! :0)
