Post Match: Bournemouth v Liverpool (EPL 21/1/24 4.30pm)

I don’t think the ref even awarded a freekick

And that was the problem with it. I think many would have said that was at worst a yellow, and borderline red, but -perhaps I should speak only for myself - I would have accepted that as being defined as a yellow only. For the on-field ref to give nothing, it feels unjustified that the VAR didn’t overrule and give red - even if they (VAR) are wanting to see legs bending backwards (Jones’ red challenge) to make an overrule.

It’s bullshit and as has been discussed for weeks, months, seasons, VAR merely weakens the on-field ref’s decision making process (‘well I’m not making a call if I don’t have to since VAR is there’) whilst VAR have no real powers to question the on-field ref. Besides, as Clattenburg tells us, no ref wants to overrule one of their mates anyway so what’s the point?

The flag was up on that Clark attack pretty much as soon as the foul so I assume it was offside prior to the foul.

Anyhow it’s about consistency, Hooper was overruled on Jones, fair enough but that was nasty and should have been made a red even the main sky commentator brought up Jones, Smith said it wasn’t malicious though he’s an Arsenal biased tosser so I wouldn’t take much from his assessment.

Anyhow we were quite clinical today, didn’t create a lot of brilliant chances bar the goals but scored all 4, 2 of which you’d hope to put away, Jota’s second was odd and that Nunez one was really tough but he made it look simple.

That second Darwin goal could easily have hit the post. That would have fitted the narrative. It just shows how fine the margins are and how important it is to keep on plugging away.
Here’s hoping that his luck changes in the second half of the season.

The PGMOL are just playing with words as though they are writing a summation for some Philadelphia Lawyer
They said the tackle on Diaz was not deemed a dangerous tackle, it was a reckless one - WTF…!!!
One is the same as the other is it not.!

‘They are amazing’ - Andoni Iraola makes honest Liverpool admission after Bournemouth thrashing

Andoni Iraola admits his Bournemouth side had no answer to Liverpool’s “amazing” second-half prowess as the Reds went five points clear at the Premier League summit.

Two goals apiece from Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota after the interval ensured a 4-0 romp for Jurgen Klopp’s side at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Liverpool, returning after their mid-winter break, had struggled to make a significant impact for long periods during the opening half.
But the Reds ultimately proved too strong with Iraola highlighting reasons why the Reds are in title contention.

“Liverpool were really clinical,” said the Cherries manager. “Especially their first goal, it’s difficult to defend as it’s a really good combination. The other goals I think we could do more and defend better and react more quickly to these second balls.

“Liverpool are really physical and they keep for 100 minutes this high intensity, they win a lot of duels in the middle and once you become a little bit weaker and don’t arrive too early and leave them a bit of space, it becomes really difficult because they take their chances every time they arrive – their finishes were very, very good.

“If you see the second-half numbers of Liverpool they are amazing. They are usually good in the first half but in the second half they are amazing.

“We know against this top level of opposition we have to be at our best and have some moments of inspiration like they did with their first goal. We didn’t find that.

“Even at our best, in the (League) Cup game (when Liverpool won 2-1 in November), we couldn’t beat Liverpool and there’s a reason they’ve only lost one game and that was with nine players. They scored four goals which were all really quality finishes.”

Bournemouth and Liverpool were the two form Premier League teams going into the game having previously taken 22 points from a possible 30.

And of the game, Iraola added: “We kept a high level in the first 45 minutes, but after their first goal we started doing things that we hadn’t been doing before, going too fast and not as disciplined tactically. We played worse in the second half, yes.

“We had our chances, we had a lot of set-pieces and we could have shot more, but were trying to find better positions. Against this level of opposition, sometimes you just need to give it a try and finish the things.

“I was happy with the beginning of the first half and how we ended the first half. The last 10 minutes of the first half we had momentum and were being what we wanted to be. But the first goal they scored was key. From then, they won confidence and started to be even more aggressive in the press and we weren’t so clear with the things we were doing.

Thanks for reminding everyone, Andoni. Pity the media don’t recognise that fact.

The terminology is careless (freekick), reckless (yellow + freekick), using excessive force (red+freekick)

According to what limie says that refs are told that if contact is made that bends the angle at an ususual angle then it is excessive force.

Watch Diaz’s ankle bend medially and that takes more force to do than the one on Bissouma by Jones which was laterally.

One a red tge other not even a foul, just unbelieveable inconsistencies

It really looked to me like he was being asked to do Trent inverted fullback thing, from the left.

In all honesty, at times we don’t help ourselves. With the Diaz one, we played on for ages at one point taking the ball past Luis while he was rolling around on the floor. No-one appealed for anything. When Van Dijk finally puts the ball out, he looks more pissed off at having to stop playing than he does the foul.

A more cynical team would have stopped immediately. A couple of players would be detailed to front up to Kluivert, a couple on the referee telling him what a shithouse tackle it was. They would manufacture outrage in the situation, and force the decision.

I know Paul Tierney is a fucking twat, but we put no pressure at all on him or Madley.

The team know to expect nothing from him. We play to win despite the cheats now. I expect Klopp has drilled this mentality into them. We have to be 20% better than every other team in order to suceed and fuck all of them we will be. Don’t beg the refs for scraps. Take the victory anyway and laugh at their inability to stop us after the game.

Could well be, although I have to say I would not have expected to thrive as he did in that role. His heat map for the match really does look like that was an instruction. Some overlapping wide runs, but largely sitting in that right hand channel. Unexpected, because a lot of observers would have expected Bournemouth’s attack to force him wider - he must have been going to that area with a good degree of discipline every time we gained possession.

100 percent this. Klopp won’t allow/encourage/foster the environment for/turn a blind eye to (take your pick) players using this gamesmanship as necessary and I fear it could cost us another title.

All our players would be booked, I think Klopp’s always thought he will take the brunt of it on the touch line and afterwards.

Cheating may cost us the title it’s already cost us at least 4-6pts not to mention the 50/50 stuff.

I begin to wonder what’s the doom and gloom about Salah going to AFCON in the media.
Every year, we keep doing great (or at least not worse).

I wish all fans (certainly including Liverpool fans) would speak like this about their opponents after a loss or a draw instead of all the bile and conspiracy theories fans of the bigger clubs tends to invent after they lose.

Really enjoyed listening to this. So down to earth, many of them very knowledgable and none of them are ranting, mocking the opponent, opponents fans or the ref.

I really enjoyed watching this and so i figured I could share. So much dignity on show in this video.

Should we eat hovis bread sambo’s in our flat caps and corduroy trousers when we doff our caps to the better opposition?
Of course, using the conspiracy theory accusation renders all argument useless…I think Liverpool supporters by in large accept defeat with a degree of grace. Unless that defeat comes with the added bonus of referee interference.
But you have your moment with the Bournemouth supporters, fair dues.

Thanks for the video. I thought the Cherries fans spoke well, and saw the game about like I did. Even-stevens first half, we upped it second half, some good goals and the difference between the sides was clear in the end. 4-0 probably slightly flattered us as that sounds like a real beating, and Bournemouth were more competitive than the scoreline might suggest.

As for how we react, it’s a tough conundrum what to say on that.

Let’s look at the one defeat this season, at Spurs. They are a good team and Postecoglu is a very likable bloke, and professionally he has a clear vision for the game and Spurs have improved a level from where they were, playing attractive football. There’s a lot to like there. If I was a Spurs fan I’d be very happy with it so far.

On the negative side of that game, ugh. Let me count the ways! Lol.

Curtis Jones red.
Diaz goal chalked off.
Jota red.

All significant incidents that went against us and completely changed the whole thing, and it would be remiss of us to not raise those legitimate points.

I know Robbo will get straight back in the team, but Gomez is really doing well at that left back position and imo not automatically drop out the team.
