Post Match: Brighton v Liverpool (EPL 8/10/23 2pm)

Today subs didn’t help. We were better with Matip and Trent.

Disappointing!
Midfield so often over run.
Not sure about MacAllister, would like to see him further forward where his passing would be valuable. He loses the ball a lot so unless we dominate midfield and he plays more a deep play maker role he ends up being pretty useless as things stand.
1st half Szoboszlai spent too much time to far forward, Elliot was often missing and we were over run in midfield. Often looked like we didn’t have a midfield at all!

Yet terrible on the first. Just a complete lack or reaction to us losing the ball. He is the best in the world, but we shouldn’t use that to pawn off his mistakes to others

An improvement on our performances v Brighton last season, primarily because we look more solid out of possession. But we still give the ball away too sloppily - and a few too many fouls for my liking - against teams which press well.

Gravenberch was the right sub in that sense, as he’s good at picking up in small spaces and advancing. Think he has earned some starts.

Nunez did pretty well I thought, but our wing play wasn’t great and we kept running out of road. I think we should play Jota ahead of Diaz in the derby. He’s more in form and poses a different threat.

I think the problem is more a communication problem between defence and midfield. The fact that we keep conceding first points towards players being uncertain as to who is covering what.

You’d think they would learn but this is a transition season. I’m hoping that they will improve as the season progresses.

Mac Allister should have gone off at half time not Elliott.I’ve yet to be convinced he should be an obvious starter for us.
Draw is probably a fair result.Had Gravenberch scored that chance i think the game would have finished 1-3.Both teams looked out of sorts after Thursday night.

Diaz is a bit of a nothingness at the moment runs around but is offering very little.

I thought we were shite, how do you feel … :sunglasses:

Useless is v harsh. Mac Allister adds shape and makes our midfield more dynamic in my view, though I agree he isn’t a natural DLP like, say, Thiago

Lots of bullshit about who can and can’t play the 6.

We did perfectly well for many seasons without a destroyer type, you just need to set up the rest of the team properly. We have good enough players to replicate/better the Hendo/Lallana/Gini midfield.

More importantly we need Jota and Gakpo able to play because when Nunez isn’t on it, he doesn’t score. When Jota and Gakpo aren’t on it, they still end up coming up with something.

go buy a 6 and stop this shit show, better teams will tear us apart on the transition.
if you dont trust endo why did you buy him , done our heads about his quality. Robertson is in decline and a proper left back is needed to challenge him and keep him on his toes , lastly the way we passed the ball in the defensive third is disgraceful at times underestimating brighton .
well we got one point and this was the maximum we deserved

Such as an assist, perhaps?

I thought Nunez was excellent today

There aren’t many better sides out there at doing to us what Brighton challenged us with today

This isn’t the first time though. We didn’t buy Mac Allister to play as a ‘6’, as evidenced by our attempts to sign Caicedo and Lavia. We panic bought Endo but he’s not good enough to play.

Mac Allister isn’t a bad option there, particuarly if you get it right in front of him, but he’s not the ideal player either. He should be filling in there every now and then, not be the go to option.

That said, I thought he had a pretty good second half today.

20 minutes of normal play wasn’t going to be enough away at Brighton. They outworked and outplayed us for the majority of the game. The passivity and the lack of intensity was irritating and it made them look better than they really are. The first goal should be a finable offence. Van Dijk, Mac Allister and Alisson are not alert and fail to react. The second is Robertson’s fault and everyone else’s behind him. But it was coming. Failing to keep possession and giving up foul after foul in dangerous positions was bound to lead to them equalising.

Really hoped that we had moved past these sort of performances especially when other top 4 contenders are playing each other. Only positive is that we got 1 point out of a game from which we didn’t deserve any.

Happy with a point in the end.

Found it difficult to vote for 3 in the poll because apart from Salah and Matip everyone else was average-poor.
Diaz and Nunez offered nothing. Midfield was poor in general, McAllister needs to up his game or Gravenberch is going to take his place.
We were a shambles at the back after the 2 subs came on, Gomez in particular was all over the place.

All that said we’ve had 5 aways out of 8 and 4 of them against sides who’ll be challenging at the top end of the table. Only one we lost through blatant corruption.
Should have an easier run after the break, got to take advantage of it.

VAR again i cant believe that a red card was not given , never had any intention to play the ball, its yellow anywhere on the field and red when you prevent your opponent from scoring but dont you all worry the PMOGL will issue an apology and Gary Neville will accept it

They’re just a very good side, and the team on paper looked pretty strong still.

The way of how I see it is that Salah and Nunez are good as a partnership. However, Diaz can’t link up well with Nunez which is a problem.

The starting tactics for first 25 minutes are an absolute shambles. Macca was pressed like mad and yet his midfield partners on the left and right side of him and TAA were nowhere to be seen.

The shape was then tweaked and allowed faster vertical play with the front 3 and Szobozlai linking up. Then we were 2 up.

Klopp decided to took out Matip for Konate and Konate gave away a free-kick which Robbo failed to clear…

For the forward line, Diaz probably gets the lowest score.

As for the Midfield, Elliott’s only positive contribution is to dummy the ball for Salah to score while macca was at fault for the first conceded goal.

For our defence, probably only Matip will come out of this unscathed. The rest were pretty gash with VVD passing a tad too hard for macca’s liking that led to Macca being caught out, Robbo’s crosses were off all day and failed to clear the free-kick which brighton scored from, TAA was too rusty, Gomez and Konate were struggling against Mitoma together.
