How I love that man
First things first. I thought the ref had a good game. Maybe it was just average, but in comparison to the crap we usually suffer, that was ok.
The VAR should have sent Gross off for denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity, but we got a penalty, and I will take that.
The main decision I remember Antony Taylor getting wrong was in giving them a free kick when it was a throw, but apart from that, not too bad.
We were OK.
Brighton are a good side. Theyāre going to finish in the top 7. Getting a point there is not nothing.
They were better in the first half, and we won the half 2-1.
We were better in the second half, and they won the half 1-0.
It happens.
Itās a fair result.
Iām not claiming heās a first choice, but I think he was an opportunistic buy who at the very least fulfilled the criteria we were looking for. JĆ¼rgen himself acknowledges that we were very lucky in getting two players in Szoboszlai and Mac Allister who could slot in right away.
Very small point but I find it really helpful that it gets brought up again, because it at least gives me some context as to what should be applicable here.
As for the game, three observations:
First, 2-2 away at Brighton isnāt too bad. They got whacked last week, so they were always going to be on it this week.
Second, we were getting overrun in midfield a bit. Part of that is the way Brighton play when they are on. They hunt in packs and press very well. So maybe thereās nothing we could do when it is like that. Then again, it does make a bit of a case for needing a dedicated 6. If Endo started maybe he does better or maybe he does not, but if I could do that game again I would start Endo, Mac and Szobo. Overall the midfield is evolving before our eyes and it is better than last seasons old boys, but it still needs some work. Whether that will include the signing of a world class number 6 remains to be seen.
Third, you have to take your chances! Gravenberch could have put it to bed, and he was frustrated to miss that one.
Beyond that, I thought Robbo should have cleared the cross with his right foot. Even a block sends it back out that way, but he turned to favour his left, no doubt through years of conditioning, but it was the wrong move.
Alisson is brilliant, Mo scored a couple, Darwin was a bit quiet.
Oh, and having five strikers suits us, so we missed being able to make changes today, as Iām convinced we win that game if we refresh the striker unit, mid game.
Three observations from me? I couldnāt limit it, once I started typing.
We are probably not quite as good as we were thinking before the Spurs game, but with a fair wind we will still be up there. It is early days for Klopp 2.0 so a strong title challenge might be too much to ask for just yet, but we can regroup over the international break and get going again.
Err weāre 3 points off top spot. Thatās after being cheated out of 3 points last week + dodgy reds and non penos we should have had.
Weāll defo be challenging for top spot thatās if the refs allow us.
Curtis is a big loss for us by the way.
Weād piss the league if the refs werenāt against us every fucking week.
Pathetic from Allison.
WTF was going through his mind to feel the need to be that far out of his goal and then saunter back into position.
And Robertson
Am shocked to see that few (if any) on this board understand the DOGSO rule properly.
Have to wait until I get home tomorrow to watch the game, but I saw the setup and the goals and itās disappointing to see Virg trying to pass a ball to MacAllister right up the gut of the midfield when he had 3 BHA players waiting to pounce. Fucking dunce, that is.
BHA once again packed the midfield and our lads were static off the ball. Too pedestrian in off-ball movement and opening passing lanes to transition the ball forward.
Would have liked to see Szobocop dropping deeper to collect the ball and push it forward. Felt like he wasnāt as impactful as usual today.
More needless points dropped. Going to be tough to mount a title challenge, playing like that.
NB, the tackle on Nunez after he sidestepped the BHA fullback was at least a yellow, no card given. Officials definitely hate us.
Want the positive? Weāll go top with a decent win in our next match.
Top.
Is that really a positive though?
As Klopp has said in the pastā¦who cares who sits top in October, plus we wouldnāt even be top for long enough for everyone to see it.
The positive is weāve come away with no injuries and now head into a break where after that weāll have Jota and hopefully Gakpo back.
Itās not a positive thing to go top with a decent win?
Were you one of the fans who booed when we went top after a draw in Rafaās time?
0-0 home to West Ham if I recall?
So many disgusting things happened back then, including from our supposed legends
The penalty VAR video said penalty check not card so it wasnāt checking on the card.
Apparently Robbo heard a shout, thatās why he pulled out of clearing the ball. I guess that mustāve been Dunk telling him āIāve got it!ā
I am sure Endo will be a very useful player during this season, especially in F. A. cup
Monday morning reflections.
Liverpool were below par. I think there is a hangover from the Spurs match. Two players who could make an impact were suspended. Incorrectly.
Re the penalty.
Szoboszlai was in a position to score a goal. Its a red card offence. There is no ambiguity about this.
But the ref and VAR donāt think so.
Is anyone vaguely surprised?
We can all have opinions, but the fact is that Dom scores from the chance if he isnāt fouled. Taylor sees this. And he delays. Its a much clearer red card than Virgils a couple of weeks ago. But hey, lets not be faintly surprised with the non decision.
In other news. City and Newcastle should both have players red carded. Much bigger offences than Jota. Anyone arguing this??
In (un)related news, PL refs are moonlighting in UAE. Interesting?
After the shafting at Spurs, and a sub par display on Saturday we are still in the mix. We have a new midfield and now have injuries and suspensions to navigate.
Its not too bad.
