Post match: Burnley v Liverpool (EPL 13/2/22 2pm)

So are the rest of them though. Just because he said it with authortiy and no one could directly challenge his view, it came across as he knows better than todays pundits.

Alan Hansen in 2022 reeling off his thoughts on defending would not look too dissimilar to what we see from ex-pros that do it today. Youd be able to pick it apart and see how week by week he contradicts himself. Social media puts the spotlight on it.

Going to disagree there. Hansen vs Jenas or Richards? You cannot begin to compare, and thats just two!

Oh Jenas talks dog shit - we can agree on that!

It’s easy to pick out the ones that are miles off the mark. My point it that Hansen was not perfect in his analysis - and largely rode the wave of his dominance as a CB back in the day.

I’d say, in todays punditry, the likes of Nev, Carra, Richards, Alex Scott, and to a degree Keane, all understand football and defending as well as Hansen did.

Personality has a big part to play in how much people like a pundit - Richards is one that really seems to divide people. But his football knowledge is solid.

The more these pundits claim that Liverpool’s defending was bad , hopefully…the more teams decide to go hopefull route one football and gift posession back to us

I’ve not been impressed with Richards at all to be honest.

He is better than Jenas mind.

Haven’t watched match of the day for years and listening to you guys proves i made the correct decision, i used to watch goals on Sunday with its unbelievable Jeff i don’t think hes on anymore.

Agreed. Football punditry is entertainment and shouldn’t be taken seriously. Most of the people doing it are former pros who weren’t even that good themselves. Micah Richards is a grinning ninny. How can anyone take what he says seriously? The only people worth listening to when it comes to tactics are the top managers. It was good listening to Mourinho and Wenger when they were Bein for a while. At least they had some idea what they are talking about.

There wasn’t really much to say about the Burnley game. Completely routine win for us with Burnley never likely to score in a million years. A bit of a yawn fest for the neutral but the pundits have to say something to make it sound more interesting. They’ve got a product to sell so I don’t blame them.

This is why we need VAR. If you add a error % to all non-var decisions, we would be giving up more goals chances than anyone else.

Yep, this is what Klopp and his coaches came up with when VAR was being introduced. As you say it only works when you know VAR will rule out any goal which is offside.

These pundits today behave like the judges on some talent show…
Knowing full well that their opinion will never ever get challenged by the sap on the end of the criticism…
Would love it if someday a player took that Roy Keane to task and knocked him out live on-air :0)

Unfortunately, even shit teams are driven by stats, and blatant truths:
We have the best gk in 1 on 1 passages in the world, undeniably.
so pundits proclamations that might have had creedence 20 years ago because they played the game that hadn’t changed that much in the prior 20 years, now fall on deaf ears.
All of opponents prepare for our high-line as some sort of opportunity, not because it really is one, but because there’s really nothing else they can try.

German TV gets much more access to current managers live in the studio and of course they’re far better pundits than ex-players. Klopp got better at his core job too after his summer of World Cup TV punditry in 2006.

Throw Murphy and Keown into the gormless idiot category.

Have to disagree. “Bubbly” personality but a poor analyst. Prefer Ian Wright to him.

And when did Dion Dublin become a thing again??

There’s no ‘apparently’ about it.

I used to like him on They Think It’s All Over… before they ruined it.

How could anyone dislike Ian Wright. Love the guy. McCoist is great for enthusiasm alone. Carra and Neville are good pundits tbf and clearly put effort into prep. I’m really struggling after that. The rest are on a spectrum from average to utter shite/Jenas.

When Ian Wright started out he was a joke. He’s seemed to accept he’s not one for deep analysis so makes what he says interesting and not banal like those others.

I like Wrighty, some don’t. I like his enthusiasm.

Yeah he’s just himself, so authentic compared to the fakes like Jenas. Also comes across as compassionate and grateful following his own life experiences

Our high line was best summed up against Arsenal after 10 minutes someone noted that not at least pressuring the goal keeper led to a ball over the top so we started to pressure Johnstone, he didn’t kick an accurate one for the entirety of the match afterwards that wasn’t offside or wayward.

As others have said it’s an opportunity but more often than not it’s going require a resulting corner or some other break in play and it wasn’t too smart early season when VVD was getting back to fitness but it’s pretty on it now.

Also speaking of that Arsenal match, TAA stayed that 10 feet further back due to Martinelli.
