Post match; Everton v Liverpool (EPL 19/4/26 2pm)

To me it looked like everyone had a bit of a mixed game in a poorly contested game of football, nobody really stood out and no one stuck out like a sore thumb, other than maybe Isak.

You beat me to it I was scratching my head over those comments after watching motd as they thought he was brilliant playing in his natural position.

Yeah it was a poor performance that no one really comes out of with that much credit in terms of their creative contributions. But this is often the case for this game even in a good season. I think this was probably poor in a uniquely “this season is shit” way in that we continued to look like we didn’t know what we were supposed to be doing with different players playing different version of the game plan but again we made up for it simply because we had more talent on the pitch than the team we were playing.

All in all, getting the points was good. Getting them and preventing them getting any was better. The performance was poor but not in a way that can be excused just because this fixture is often poor quality. Ibou was especially problematic not just because of how bad he was but because in a game where better players than him got us through it with graft he was someone who doesn’t share the quality of many of his teammates but was found lacking because of his application time and time again.

Yup , for all his ability , he really can be such a frustrating player to watch. FWIW I actually did give him a MOTM vote (along with Virg and Gakpo) basically because just being average was enough to warrant it yesterday.

I thought a lot of the problems around Jones were issues created for him by his team mates. There is an awful lack of interest in players making themselves available for a pass when we’ve got it at the back and so the number of times Jones found himself in a dead end was absurd. Maybe he overplays in that situation too often and there was one time in particular that was bad when he tried to force a pass in to Dom that got cut out (and even if the pass would have found its mark there was nothing Dom could have done with it anyway). But the bigger issue was the number of times people gave him the ball that put him in the shit and then just watched him be forced to try to find a way out of it by himself. It’s part of what I said about different players playing different versions of our game plan in the same game

Jones had something like 93% pass completion rate and more than double the defensive contributions that Konate had, who was second in this statistical category.

If anyone deserved MotM, it was Jones.

True, but he was also rubbish.

And then they discovered that Woodside is still closed and ended up back at the Pier Head.

I reckon you had a brilliant time at your local last night.

Based on highlights alone for this one and observations across the season, I’ve lost count of how many times I see Konate caught on the wrong side of an attacker and ends up chasing them down our right channel. Everton’s goal came from it.

It honestly drives me up the wall, it occurs every game and puts more pressure on our full back.

Oh, I certainly did.

Robertson on Freddie Woodman:

"I take the mickey out of him a lot and me and Freddie always have a laugh and a joke but he’s a credit to himself. Since he has come in he has been unbelievable. Whether that’s Mo Salah wanting to stay out and take penalties an hour after training – Woody is the one that is out there – or whether it’s running after the game as well.

I’ve dragged him out after PSG and he got through it with the lads and he is always there for everyone and always there to support. These people in a club like this are so important. Maybe they don’t always get the credit they deserve and get the limelight or things like that, but when he walked back in the changing room he got a nice reception."

I was thinking exactly the same thing. He was sitting in front of Everton fans as well. Brave lad.
