Poor result, and a good learning curve for that young team. It’s the older players who let us down tonight. Neither Alli, nor VVD covered themselves in glory. Several players were off, like for instance Barcola, especially first half. By far not the only one.
Congrats to Fener for a committed, typical Dirk Kuyt performance. They fully deserve their win.

The positives - Nyoni and another Isak goal.
The negatives - everything else.
Araujo should be the first name on the team sheet. Shows more grit and determination than the rest of the defensive unit put together. Away in Turkey he has to be starting that game.
Ali and Virgil, it was sad watching both of them tonight.

I don’t know how Iraola is behind scenes, but I hope he tears them a new one. That was terrible on every level and it raises concerns going forward.

sort of game i expected. Wasn’t out night. They raised their game, we were patchy. It is what it is.
We’ll qualify and that’s is all that matters.

I see the winds of change coming. Ali and VVD can both still play, but they are not what they were. I don’t see either one here beyond this season. But I also see a change or two coming to that midfield, and it is quite possible that a big name or two will be moved on/allowed to leave.
That was a bad day at the office, but in the grand scheme of things you get a bit of margin in this format of the CL, so it need not be too damaging, provided we respond.
Nyoni continues to impress and he is starting to make a case to be the first midfielder pencilled in, while some bigger names will have to fight it out to play with him. We might not be fully there yet, but that’s how it looks to be shaping up.
Turkey is a pain in the arse to go to. Passionate crowds and the teams often step up when we come to town, desperate to show what they can do. Fair play to them for that. It’s up to us to match their endeavor, and unfortunately tonight we just did not look like we had enough fight in us, which was a real shame.

I said in prematch thread about Araujo and how important he was but Iraola left him on bench all game and we conceded 3 just like before we signed Ronnie, the penny never dropped for Iraola but i suppose hes still very inexperienced in CL. Tonight we were embarrassing.

I think AI got the rotation wrong with this. Alisson and Virg could have done with a rest. Nyoni was excellent again and Rio very determined if a bit of a headless chicken at times.
It was the disorganisation at the back that did for us, and we have been pretty reasonable there in recent games.
