Post match: Liverpool v Ajax (UCL 13/9/22 8.00pm)

Yeah, Im open to the idea that my criticism is based on an overly simplified picture of how they scored based on the limited footage the US coverage tends to show. Annoyingly they tend to start all their highlights just on the final pass and so you generally dont get to see how the team really carved out the opportunity. From the footage we were shown it does like we were in a decent position and got cut open by 1 fairly simple straight pass. I read this morning though that the goal was preceded by the highest number of passes leading to a goal in Ajaxā€™s history since opta started collecting data.

Wouldnt be surprised, as soon as they scored I said to my mate that must have been 50 passes. I donā€™t think it was actually that many but it felt like it.

They beat the press once, and although we reset, it still must have messed with our organisation. It was a very good goal.

I think this illustrates my point about communication, Iā€™d be expecting Milner to pick up that run following a shout from Elliot to say heā€™s coming.

Why 2 of our midfielders are stood marking nothing was systematic of the horror show of that game.

Just imagine if Thiago played as many games as KDB does for City.

That what is killing me. So many of our goals this season are conceded with plenty of defenders in shot, just not doing what is necessary for them to influence anything.

Just a stupid question, why Van D did not put out a foot to stop the shot? he always has his hands behind back and static feet that leaves space for attackers to shoot. Many goals conceded that way, just put out a leg and try to block. Or maybe I donā€™t know anything about defending. I hope I did not cross a line or insulted anyone by pointing out this glaring deficiency in his defending.

Your post is politely rude

Just donā€™t wait 11 months before you post again. :+1:

Yeah, just wait 12 months or more.

Top Red Big Kev also quite likes an injury, you know.

Yes and in that one Fabinho is the left sided midfielder and Milner is the 6! Hopefully that period of confusion is over!

I think itā€™s something heā€™s done a lot since joining us - allowing a low percentage shot to happen in order to avoid over selling himself and conceding a high percentage chance.

When it doesnā€™t work though it looks pretty silly, and he hasnā€™t been judging it well so far this season (although I donā€™t blame him on the Kudus goal).

Wasnā€™t Van Dijk partially blocked off by another player? Havenā€™t watched the goals back but thatā€™s what I remember, seemed to stop him getting closer to the ball.

Sell the fecker. Whereā€™s the Maguire money FSG?

You are making it too complicated, we had a good defensive position, all we needed to do was get pressure on the ball and stay with the players. Trent stepping towards their player and not tracking Berghuis was the flaw as realistically that pass in behind, which was a good pass, was the only on that threatened us. Track the run and it is stopped.

As a coach make things simple, slow the opposition down, make them play in front of you, if there is no pressure on the ball track the runners, which was our big failing last week. For me Trent had a far better game defensively than last week but he needs to be more switched on in that situation of where the danger is and Matip needed to communicate better.

Yes Klopp said exactly this, we were much better vā€™s Ajax at forcing them to play how we wanted them to, which was pushing them back to their keeper who went long sometimes and we retained posession.

As all the players have said it was a big step forward, but lots of room for improvement.

I am a little bit lost on the goal we conceeded, why, in here, we are over complicating the error in our defending the goal, Trent tracks the run and there is no pass in behind we then have Mo and Elliott to press the ball. With Trent not tracking it drags Matip out who then has to leave Bergwijn, then leaving Virg with 2.

Track the run and we are more in control of the situation.

Slow the opposition down and we get a better defensive shape.

Itā€™s as I said earlier I think itā€™s lack of communication, if you had Matip who can see the entire play unfolding screaming Trent to track the run he would, but Trent probably made a judgement call in a split second, ended up ball watching and they were gone.

Agree, but when looking back, our coaches need to address Trents decision making, as a ball in behind with a free runner is far more dangerous than where the ball was on the sideline at the half way line with 2 players moving over to pressure.

Clearly, me making one of my rare Anfield appearances had the desired effect, or at least it did in the second half. The first half was pretty underwhelming and Ajax coped with us pretty easily until Salah finally found some space.
We certainly played with more energy and imagination in the second half, but even so not everything is clicking into place. I agree with the idea of taking Elliot out of the firing line and playing Thiago on the right and seeing what Arthur can bring to the team. Thereā€™s certainly plenty of time to work on that before our next game.
