Post Match: Liverpool v Arsenal (ELC 1/10/20 7.45pm)

At the start of the week I would have taken a loss here and a win in the league so I’m not too upset. This was a competition (along with Internationals) that should have been put on hold for the season anyway.

Fortunately I didn’t hear the commentary because I turn the sound off these days for exactly that reason. I get so wound up with the sycophantic nonsense that Tyler and the other one on BT Sports (whose name I can’t remember) spout every game.
They talk about Arteta like he’s the second coming of the Messiah and this is because he worked with Guardiola, or as Tyler would say ‘the Professor of Football’.
The media are desperate for Arteta to turn Arsenal into another Man City, they’re already describing the Carabou Cup game as a ‘meeting of minds’. Unfortunately for Arteta he doesn’t have unlimited oil money to play with, so he will have to work a lot harder than Guardiola to reach pinnacle that Sky and BT want.
Oh wait, according to them Arteta is already there isn’t he?
I really can’t listen to their shit anymore.

If this was a man of the match performance for some on here (he’s leading the vote!) then the rest of our players must have been truly gash

Was really surprised seeing that too, thought his performance was nothing special, shaky on the ball. Not good enough to make the starting lineup against a decent opponent. It there are no takers we perhaps could use him for the last 10 minutes when we could use somebody with his length.

I am totally against drawing conclusions about a player on a single match, particularly one where, as Klopp himself days, involved 2 days training together and thats it.

That includes Wilson, or Adrian, or Origi. Silly to say someone is finished here when they (Wilson) haven’t even be proven in a proper game.

Hopefully Klopp is less trigger happy and he’s properly analysed their games…well there’s no ‘hope’ about it. He has.

Whether you thought Grujic was poor or played well, I’ll personally reserve my judgement for when he plays a real game with real players around him. He will gain that chance by pushing for a place by training well. Not by his performance in a LC reserve team game.

I’m pretty sure Klopp and the coaches don’t need to wait until the likes if Wilson and Grujic play “real games with real players” around them to know whether they will fit in.

He works with these lads every day. These lads work with the first team every day. If they can’t do it on a training pitch or against a weakened arsenal side, they can’t do it when the chips are down and it means something. Doesn’t mean you still throw them in and just hope they can pull up trees.

Wilson, Origi, and Grujic are players that would have been good enough for Liverpool 7-10 years ago, when we had the likes of Jovanovic, Poulson and Konchesky kicking about. But we are now so so much better than that mid table version of ourselves - times have changed. If it weren’t for Covid, these players probably would have left weeks ago.

The Manager doesn’t care about domestic cups and this conveys itself to the players. As a consequence our performances in these competitions is substandard and the manager responds along the lines of “Oh well, it would have been nice to win, but never mind”

The stop start technique only works if the GKs move too early if they stand their ground until the ball is struck they will stop the shot because the penalty taker loses the advantage of a run up. Teams study the penalty takers technique beforehand so they know who employs that trick no excuse really.

rhys williams is pretty good on the ball, impressive passing range, and his frame might be even bigger than virgil’s

only downside to being out of this competition is that he won’t get more chances with the first team

That Arsenal team was only 4 changes to the team that played us on Monday and even then, they were 1st team experienced youngsters, the only player not involved for them was PEA,what i found funny was Arteta’s interview afterwards when asked about the game and result, saying how he’s come to Anfield and beaten the best team in Europe right now.

I know he’s improved Arsenal since he’s arrived (not really that hard considering the shit they were in to start with) and i give him credit for that, but after that remark about beating us in the cup and his attitude over our last couple of games where they’ve won,i’m starting to think this guy is one delusional cunt.

first 11 v first 11 our team are pretty much head and shoulders better than Arsenal,to think we handed them 2 goals in the 2-1 loss last season (when we already won the league),to draw 1-1 but lose on penalties in the charity shield game and then lose again on penalites with our 2nd string lastnight, and he thinks he’s beaten the best team in Europe, laughable, when it mattered we won 3-1 and gifted them their goal again,i just think Arteta,Arsenal and the tabloids think they are better than what they actually are atm.

Good performance from the kid. Not sure whether these two games are shop window opportunities or he’s moved ahead of VDB and Koumetio, but after watching that last night be has a chance of being our 5th choice for the season.

He’s obviously good in the air with his height but all those headers were quality, either good distance n the defensive situations or found a Liverpool player.

Now that’s a good performance. There were at least 4 passes in there that were better than any pass Grujic made. He shows a good touch, good technique, actually puts some pace on his passes, looks composed, good in the air, took up some good positions. Yeah, nice game from the lad.

Missed Shaqiri… Considering the first XI, good game with clean sheet. Overall frustrated as WE dominated but not able to convert chances. Still pissed

Was that the QF? And there are only two more games left, had we gone on to make the final?

If so, the notion of gaining experience by having more games for fringe players is stretched, since it is only a maximum of two further games missed in this competition.

Edit:
Just checked, that was the round of 16, so three games ‘missed’, by not reaching the final.

But in the record books it just says Arsenal beat Liverpool(the best team in Europe) at Anfield .
So Arteta is right. That’s what makes it so annoying that we don’t take the domestic cups more seriously. Every defeat every failure to win these cups is a blot on our record.and feather in some other team’s cap.

Sad to lose, but not the end of the world! Origi though, was woeful! His penalty was weak.

Some good performances though, and if Leno was not in goal we would have won. Grujic was unlucky not to score.

The William’s boys did themselves no harm, which is good to see. Grujic had his best game for the Reds.

Onto Villa we go!
