Post Match: Liverpool v Arsenal (ELC 1/10/20 7.45pm)

I’ve decided we’re shit in this competition.

The big downer for me is it’s less games for fringe squad members to participate in.

Stupid Mickey Mouse cup, didn’t want to win it anyway…

Surprised to see people saying arsenal looked good? Thought they were average bar a 5 minute spell in 2nd half.
We take our chances and we win with ease.
Thought minamino struggled all night to get into it. I’m still not sure he fits into our team.

Looks like Shaq is off, Wilson needs to follow - amazed he stayed on for the full 90. Didn’t notice him until he missed pen.
No idea why we aren’t selling Divock and keeping Brewster ? Divocks had his time he needs to move on.

Who wants to win a cardboard cup if it gets wet its fucked.

That is really the biggest problem. I liked the fact that Klopp was still playing the odd first teamer to give the team structure and better experience. I am wondering if we will see more of these guys with regular swap outs during league matches - we should be capable of resting any of our first choice XI with the summer signings. Unfortunately, I can’t help but think that this match was also used as a shop window for players we want to get rid of.

What the actual fuck?

The next League match is around Christmas and we still play 3 matches every week for the next two months, they will get enough playing time.

It was infuriating listening to the commentary. It’s was like Iniesta’s Barca had rolled into town. The wanking about them playing out from the back was going on and on, and the fact that it only resulted in them coughing up possession just outside their own box four times out of five went unremarked on.

Having now had a night to sleep over this, my opinion is that Klopp really, really wasn’t fussed about the result. He put out a makeshift team on the pitch of which he knew it would disfunction at times, and so it did.

Presumably, it’s the individual performances he was interested in, and will have looked at.

Adrian was very good and deserves to stay as our number 2. Some of the saves he made were outstanding.

The defence was good in the whole. Neco Williams had a good game, although he suffered a bit from naivety at times in defensive phases. But he’s a good lad and has a future here as Trent’s back-up I think. On the other side, Millie offered what he offers at all times: aggressiveness, willingness to move forward and good leadership on the pitch. He seems to have slowed down a bit though, not sure about that. VVD, and then Gomez did their jobs perfectly, nothing to say there. The best of the lot was Rhys Williams imo. A really good debut for him. I gave him MoM because I did expect to see him suffer more. Arsenal’s forward line is their main strength (alongside their f… goalie, who managed to keep them in the game time and time again).

In midfield, Grujic was outstanding (would have deserved a goal), Jones was a bit less flamboyant than what he has shown previously, and maybe that’s why we lacked a bit coherence in midfield at times. Wilson had an ok game I thought. Nothing spectacular, but then again, he was forced into an unfamiliar role for him. The plan was to play Shaqiri, but with offers coming in, the club didn’t want to take a risk to see him injured. That means that Shaq is off with a likeliness of 99%, and that might open up a spot for Wilson this season, who knows. His penalty was disappointing, but hey, you don’t judge a player on one penalty. Gini did very well when called upon.

Upfront, Jota showed how good he can become for us, he was electric at times. Minamino was very unlucky, but also lacked a bit of end product. But his willingness to run at all times made him a constant danger. His shot on the bar was unlucky, it deserved to go in.

Now, on to Origi. What to say about him? He showed absolutely nothing during the time he was on the pitch. Nothing, zilch. He looked completely uninterested. His penalty capped off a horror show from him. I think it’s time for him to move on. We all know that there is an outstanding player in this lad, but in order to unleash that potential, he needs to play week in week out. I also have the feeling that he has lost his enthusiasm and fire for us. That is understandable, as he will always remain a second fiddle in this squad. Before last season, he had that ability to pop up with the unexpected and crucial goal on a quite regular basis. But it hasn’t happened since a long time. Time to find yourself a new club, Divock, where you’ll be played as a first team player, and appreciated as such.

All in all, that game wasn’t as bad as my first feeling after having watched it. I prefer to look at it as the glass half full, rather than half empty.

Edit: forgot to comment about Salah. But that’s quite natural, as he was invisible and well below par.

Origi wasn’t arsed, looked poor and totally disinterested.
On the game, we could and should have put it away in normal time. Leno with his stupid fucking Hollywood saves made some chances look better than they actually were, but in general we should have beaten them.
I was dissapointed to be honest, I hate losing, and the excuse of it not being a trophy that matters doesn’t wash with me.

Shaqiri must be on his way out.
Wilson had a chance to shine and was actually piss poor.
Grujic is unlucky. Good solid player who is probably and realistically 8th choice for 3 positions. He will move to play football.
Adrian was fine, unlucky not to save the worst penalty of the lot…

An Arsenal fan asked me what I thought of the draw (referring to the next round)…I told him Ajax were still a threat, and Atalanta will be tricky. Put him back in his box.

I’m disappointed whenever we don’t win a match. So yeah, I’m disappointed. But League Cup is pretty down our priority list, so screw it.

Wilson was the weakest link. With one more in midfield - Gini? - and we would have created more and contained more. It would also cover for Jone’ lack of bite at the moment.

Onwards and upwards. Shame as its a chance to play and see more of the fringe players.

Absolutely it was. It wasn’t lost on me that Wilson’s last moment in a LFC shirt could be a missed penalty.

Less available games certainly doesn’t help the likes of Jones and Williams. Adrian to a certain degree as well where games can only be beneficial to maintaining sharpness

Like most I am disappointed to lose. This cup gives a chance of a few competitive games for fringe players and youngsters.Unlike Jurgen I thought Wilson was pretty ordinary but then I am not trying to sell him.Back 5 were sound. Good to see the Williams boys playing so well.Grujic for me was MOTM but also thought Jones played well again. Joto is all action but needs to show a little more composure at times. This will come as he settles in to the squad.Mini is also a bit rush and tear but keeps defenders on their toes. Div again does nothing . Their keeper was outstanding but we should have won this in the 90 minutes. No big deal but the fringe players and youngsters are going to struggle for meaningful game time now.

For some yes others less so.

Do you see the likes of Adrian and Williams being part of that rotation (assuming no injuries)? I dont.

I was hoping Shaqu would get another outing ahead of Wilson. Not sure that this game increased our chances of selling the Welsh wizard.

If we were showcasing players we wanted to sell it backfired.
Disappointed as I expected us to have a real go in this competition this year in spite of the amount of games, especially as they robbed us of the CS.

No, I don’t. I think that young Williams has no future with us for his lack of defending insight and his lack of speed. Unfortunate those things can not be thought, you either have it or not. The guy works his legs off and I like his enthusiasm but he is not good enough to become a regular IMO.

You know how I feel about Adrian but let me put it this way: I would play Becker in every match we play and pray a lot if I where Klopp. :sunglasses:

I haven’t seen anything from the match yet but just looking at the line ups it seems Arsenal’s first team needed penalties to beat our reserves.

Pretty embarrassing.

Few people questioning Divock’s attitude. For me he should have gone in the summer while his legacy was still high with the fanbase.
I’ve always thought JK would have happily moved him on at any time but Divock was happy to stick around. He must know his chances of playing this season are poor. We should encourage him to find a new club asap for everyone’s sake.
