Agree there is far worse than this every week, especially from Fernandez, who gets away with it all the time. But hopefully the refs now clamp down on players surrounding and abusing them.
Robbo should get no retrospective ban, however the Assistant referee should.
Then we have a diferent definition of being in someoneâs face. Of course he was whinging but he wasnât screaming and it was a couple of seconds.
Definately didnât warrant an elbow in the face.
Not even sure why youâre even mentioning this as if it should even be up for discussion. If thatâs the case Arsenal would have about 4 or 5 players receiving s ban now after that penalty decision.
Youâre obviously allowed your opinion but I cannot for the life of me see how anyone can look at that footage (your link shows exactly the same as mine by the way) and think you know what this is partly Robbo to blame. Honestly baffled by your take on this.
Yes, but theyâre not in the street are they? Itâs not some random stranger coming up out of the blue. Nonsense comparision just to try and prove yourself right.
Anyway, whatever. Every match, I see far worse protests at officials that what Robbo did. Nobody says a dickie bird. Strange hill youâve chosen to die on.
If you follow everything I have mentioned in this thread, youâll see where I am coming from, but no you just jump in with both feet and are quite confrontational if someone disagrees with your point of view.
I play the game, I have reffed the game and I have coached the game and at the levels, I have done these, Robbo would be given a red for his approach. However, as you have said this is nothing compared to what others get away with in the professional game.
It needs stamping out as the âProfessionalsâ get away with murder in their treatment of refs.
In no way do I condone the assistant refâs response but I also donât condone how Robbo approached him.
Most of us play/played the game at various levels. Doesnât add or subtract from your stance.
Even if Robbo bit the lino the reaction from a professional is totally incorrect.
And lets be honest, he wasnât âin his faceââŚthis take is consistent with Keanes derisory remarks on Sunday, concerning Robbo. Make him the protagoinst, deflection from the core issue.
On a separate note, the Keane comments are rich, considering how infantile he was on the pitch at times.
Retaliation from players is unacceptable- indeed, it often merits a red card. For an official to retaliate is completely inexcusable. The book should be thrown at him.
Maybe because I have reffed, coached and played a large amount of sports, that I feel I can comment on the attitude of players towards refereeâs, especially in footy and believe me, in footy, I am no angel on the pitch.
I just feel at the professional level they are an entitled bunch and if players were dealt with to the letter of the law the altercation between Robbo and the ref wouldnât have happened.
Youâre not wrong in your point about dealing with players properly but the first part just shows everything thatâs wrong with what youâre saying.
You canât treat them differently just because you âfeelâ like theyâre âan entitled bunchâ.
That is my whole premise of what I am saying, they are being treated differently to football players from other levels of the game as they get away with abusing referees and surrounding refs in a gang style fashion.
At other levels of footy they would be sent off or the game would be abandoned and the club would lose points as well as being fined.
They just seem to be âentitledâ as they feel they are above other levels in their behaviour towards the officials and unfortunately this is starting to filter down to grass roots football with more referee abuse going on.
It goes both ways. I donât like the way players surround referees shouting at them, but I also donât like the way referees deal with players.
If you watch the rugby, the referees will actually talk to the players and explain their decision, and more often than not that decision will make sense.
What you get in football is an aloof refusal to engage. Referees refuse eye contact, wave players away and seem to think actually communicating with players is beneath them.
Combine this with refereeing incidents rather than context and things would improve. If Iâm a professional player and Iâve just been booked for a tackle identical to one the opposition has left on me twenty minutes earlier, and the referee is waving me away while looking snootily into the air, I think Iâd get fucking angry as well.
I dont think you can ignore that the lino made no attempt to give Robbo a wide berth as he walked passed him. He made a beeline to where he was going in a way that engaged Robbo directly. This was a not a lino finding himself in a situation where he felt concern for himself and acted in self defense, as much of the defense of him has been centered on. It was someone who saw an opportunity to act on not liking the way a player had addressed him, possibly related to an incident from earlier in the half.
You cannot uncouple this shit show with the general comment about the attitude of the players towards the officials being problematic. But you also cannot uncouple it from the issue Matty raises often that the overall unpleasantness that generates selects for a certain personality of person who chooses to go into it, and that maybe played into this more than people are willing to acknowledge.
Absolutely works both ways. Rugby refs can explain decisions because the captain (only) is calmly asking him to do so. Any dissent and theyâre marched back 10 yards. Canât imagine a football ref trying to rationally explain a decision with 7-8 players from both sides all screaming in his face.
The key is having refs miked up and heard on tv, or by crowd if they have ref radio. Makes it far more transparent. Even when there are bad decisions (and there are plenty of them in rugby too), there is far less suspicion of bias/corruption.
They do need to use the existing rules. Yet they seem to selectively enforce them. Look at how Felix got away with whining at the referee for the entire game, but Jones says one thing, and gets a yellow for it.
Send off anybody who back chats any official. Would do wonders for the youth of today to see what happens when you step out of line. Very simple respect for authority,
Thats preposterous, officials are human beings not robots, players have a right to communicate with the on field official within reason. What kind of world are we trying to enter here? Get better officials who know what theyâre doing and you wonât have so much abuse towards them, you know, like back in the day?
But it doesnât answer the problem last Sunday.
Despite Keanes bleating, there is zero evidence that Robbo started this.
He could be asking a simple question.
The reaction of the lino is the probblem here. Nothing else.
