Post Match: Liverpool v Athetico Madrid (UCL 17/9/25 8pm)

Fucking brilliant CL game. Can’t beat a last minute winner! We’re showing in patches that once it clicks we’re gonna be fucking unstoppable :fire:. Come on the fucking reds :flexed_biceps:

Eh. And allowed the Atletico players enough time to get to that first ?

The quibbling here is quite weird. Anyone with eyes could see it was an overcooked pass. Commentators said the same thing.

Three goals, hit the post and missed at least one sitter, two if you count the Konate header.

Meanwhile they scored a goal that should have been ruled out for offside and a pot-shot volley that took a wicked deflection. Yes, they came back into the game but the Sorlath header aside, did Ali even have to make a save?

I get that it wasn’t comfortable and dropping points would have been a travesty given the start we had but I really think their “threat” was a lot blunter than is being made out.

Gravenberch was superb first half. Dom was excellent and Wirtz was great. Little things that aren’t quite coming off with him just yet will come with time but definitely his best performance and seems to be growing into it game by game. Saying that I’d probably not start him at Everton to avoid the shit kickers doing what they do to players with any sense of skill.

I always remind myself that Bobby Fucking Firmino got pelters on TIA for the first 18 months.

You just gotta shake your head. Fairdinkum unbelievable.

No, it hasn’t. Slot’s side in the first half of last season was very good at closing out games when in the lead.

This is something that crept in the second half of last season.

We deserved the three points. This isn’t a match where we snuck by. We were the superior side. Easily could have had 4 or 5 goals with some slightly better finishing and better passing decisions in the final third.

Salah had some vintage runs, but I do wish he’d look up and find Wirtz running free next to him. It’s been a recurring problem this season.

Gakpo has the same issue. He can be a black hole with the ball sometimes. Puts his head down and ignores the rest of the pitch. Please, play together.

I thought it was a mistake for Slot to take off Wirtz when he did. It was too conservative. We clearly needed another goal.

Frimpong is a pest with absurd pace. Very fun to watch.

Isak - man, he’s so dangerous. Quick snap on those strikes. He’s going to be incredible when he’s in form.

Big Virg deserved that winner. He was so close on multiple occasions.

Yeah…but Ally McCoist also spends several hours every week agreeing with Alan Brazil.

It wasn’t. He has to put pace on it to get it past two defenders and a keeper.

It was unlucky that it bounced awkward just as he shaped to hit it.

Agreed - before that (including a couple years under Klopp) the thing was ALWAYS giving up the first goal before roaring back in the second half.

Almost sure we signed a TV deal on making every match exciting by scoring then allowing equalizers and then win last minute.

It could have been 6-2 or 3-3 but we deserved to win and that was true Captain once again from Virg.

Either way I was not too stressed given the way this CL now works. PSG won 4 from 8 and finished about 20th. OK top 8 helps with 2 less games and a prob 2nd leg at home but is it that much of an advantage?

Back to the game Grav has become a world class beast.

You can make an argument that he’s been our best player this year. Szobo a close second.

Simeone getting sent off was just icing on the cake. He turns to the crowd to prance and scream when they score (which I don’t mind!), but can’t take it in return.

True Szobo has been excellent. I reckon he is our next captain if he hangs around. Big call given the number of leaders in the team.

Mentality monsters. We probably should have won it more comfortably, but it’s a nice winning start. Three points on the board.

Gravenberch imperious. World class.
Virg with the winner. A real captain’s contribution.
Salah’s best game of the season so far.
Wirtz’s best game of the season so far.
Isak’s debut looked promising as he builds his match fitness.

So much to like. We are improving as we go, integrating players, five wins on the spin, and the promise of much more to come.

What a time to be alive!
