How much of what you saw of us being the better side was because the game was playing out in a way Brentford were also content to play? The fact we didn’t create much if any more than they did suggests the control we looked to have was not particularly productive and maybe as much offered as earned.. I mentioned during the game how reliant we are on potshots from the edge of the box given our inability to create better quality changes with our possession and when I think back to the biggest “Ooohhhh” moments of the game they were mostly that (Grav and Rio)
We’ve been crap for most of the season. That’s the overriding point. It has not been good enough and Slot should go, but if that decision isn’t made, we are going to have to regroup and get behind him and the team for the new campaign, or it will be self-defeating.
On today’s game alone (impossible to properly view in isolation) my take is very close to @rab
We were the better side, we were on the front foot much more than many other games we’ve had, we pressed better, and we created chances. The lack of a fit and firing striker somewhat dulled our effort, but had we played like that for most of the season we would have comfortably been third.
Brentford obviously carried some threat too. They are a decent team and they had their own ambitions.
Still, I wouldn’t want to overdo it. We weren’t great, and we rightly hope for better.
Poor result considering the needed to secure CL, several players moving on, crowd there for a celebration and we drew 1-1 at Anfield.
.
We can sugarcoat it all we want but it’s a poor result and a poor season. Im so glad Arne is seeing positives in our last game.
I can’t answer that because I don’t know how Brentford wanted us to play but their manager didn’t look all that content with how it was going.
And they aren’t potshots in my eyes. I agree they aren’t the highest value chances but that edge of the box, bend it in the far corner shot is pretty standard fair and comes off regularly enough that it’s not a surprise when it does. I’d call a pot shot that kind of goal Cairney scored against us for Fulham. Proper 30 yard out, whack it has hard as you can jobs. Those Grav and Rio ones were better opportunities created to shoot than the term potshots gives them credit for.
I saw us control the ball, create the better opportunities, make their keeper make more saves, have enough corners to give Arteta a wet dream and give them fewer chances. Really they created two, the Alisson save and the header at the death. Even their goal came from a deflected shot that landed right on their lads head rather than something clear cut they’d created.
To be clear though, we weren’t good. But we did enough to be the better side whilst failing to do enough to win. If they score that header at the end I’m fuming because I don’t think we’d have deserved to lose. But I’d also be fuming for us doing that same thing again which has meant we’ve dropped points at the death for the umpteenth time this season.
In a way the game epitomised a lot of our season. We were sub-par, didn’t create enough and fluffed most of what we did create. And, somehow conspired to both almost score at the death to secure points despite the performance not being up to scratch and also concede at the death to drop points when we just needed to see the game out in that moment of pressure.
We were the better team in the first half by a distance but lacked a cutting edge, as has often been the case.
By the end of the match it could have gone either way, dropped off massively in the second half with only Mo looking dangerous before he was subbed off.
The lap of honour was really fucking strange. As disjointed, rudderless and lacking in organisation as the team have been all season. Nobody seemed sure of what to do and the manager nowhere to be seen. The players ended up standing around staring towards the Kop while the captain managed to find a spec to sit with nobody within 30 yards of him. All very odd.
Mad to think we took a quarter of our final points tally in the first 5 games of the season.
Just watched the game on a very glitchy catch up stream. These are my thoughts.
agree with @rab and @RedOverTheWater. We were clearly the better team over the game, and we can hypothesise all we want that Brentford were content to let us play, but we can’t know their intent. My issues are the same as they have been all season - we don’t know what to do when we get to edge of their low block and it’s time to create a chance. Combine this with our tendency to gift the opposition a cheap goal, and that’s why we are fifth.
on Slot there isn’t much I disagreed with in his comments. We deserved to finish fifth, and fifth got a CL spot, so that’s that. It’s mad to think there have been 15 teams worse than us, but there have been and no amount of self loathing will change that. We can be grateful that’s it’s been the kind of league where everyone has taken points off everyone else and there was no breakaway pack.
Clearly a fuckload of work to be done. If we are going to stick with Slot, then we have to deal with the reality of where this team is at, and the biggest issue is the attacking width. Without Salah, we have two wide forwards in Gakpo and Ngumoha. We need minimum two absolute belters here, and I think three is reasonable.
Really sad to see Mo and Robbo doing their farewells. Probably my two favourite players of the last decade. But it is time. New legends will take their place. That’s how it’s always been.
but it in no way should be. everyone else was out there, no? it should be normal that Slot got out there.
its telling.
if indeed Slot is given next season (or the start of it at least), then best we all take a deep breath, wipe the slate clean, and give the squad our full support.
he could learn from his mistakes, he could improve, the players could become coherent again… anything can happen, its football… despite what we would ‘put our money on’, anything CAN happen.
but for that to play out, small things like the manager having to hide on the final day and that being accepted as a rightful idea, needs to be done away with.
