Post match: Liverpool v Brighton (EPL 3/2/21 8.15pm)

First time since 1984 we’ve gone 3 games in a row at home without scoring. First time since 2012 we’ve lost back to back home games. Out played at home by Burnley and Brighton in back to back matches. Dropped points to 5 of the bottom 6.

Sure, knee jerk.

So what are you saying? Klopp out and we’re finished?

To quote an oft misattributed anonymous alcoholic:

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.”

We had a couple of chances to score last night but those opportunities were squandered. After that it was the same endless possession resulting in an easily defended lobbed pass. Over and over again.

In fairness, Brighton did give it a go and were rewarded. On the occasions that they did come up we were incapable of catching them on the break.

The way we are playing this season is reminiscent to City last year. They either blew teams away or struggled to find a shot on target. At the time I suspected City were missing Kompany and with us the endless injuries and patchwork CB partnerships are taking their toll.

Things will get better but it will take time. Voted for Kellner as MotM as he had to step in at the last minute and did a respectable job. I do wonder whether his unfamiliarity with the team caused issues with counter attacking but that’s not really his fault.

Here’s hoping that we get more luck on the injury front.

Phillips and Davies after a couple of days from Preston. There would be something different to moan about then probably putting Davies in.

Yeah, you’re right. I just thought we were in a dip anyway, and breaking one of them in sooner rather than later. As it stands does one of them start against City, or later? Brighton looked the ideal opportunity, but I get, they had been at the club a day. Its happened before though. There would have been a benefit in having Hendo back in midfield.

We have Phillips!
The problem is he gets no protection and isn’t experienced enough (same goes for Williams). Also tactically we are inept at this phase without VVD. This is what we need to be doing in training at the moment sorting our free kicks and corners out so Phillips/Williams become a threat.
I am sick of our short corners as we they are poorly rehearsed at best.

So your saying it’s Klopp’s fault?

The 21112111 formation! :astonished:

Amazing that after 2 years steamrolling a host of low block clubs and doing it twice in the past week, there are people saying that the problem is Klopp’s tactics.

As if playing 4-3-3 instead of 4-4-2 inhibits players from making runs and pass the ball quickly. Yes, yesterday’s formation and lineup were far from the most functional he could have used but attributing the ensuing shit show to Klopp’s decisions is wide off the mark.

The main issue has been evident for a while now and Klopp said it clearly in his post game comments. The team is mentally exhausted and that includes Klopp himself.

City suffered with it last season and they had fallen off a lot more than we have without having to deal with all the injuries, the monstrously bad luck and a condensed season due to a fucking pandemic.

You haven’t read the thread have you? I have and I know he took the ball of Robbo.

Agree that is what I couldn’t fathom out why he charged it when we were so good against West Ham.

You beat me to it, sorry for taking your limelight!

Edit: and @Euphoria before you. I’ll go for another coffee.

Andy Always skies them so he done him a favour.

I do agree partially with what you said but he did try and put players in positions they aren’t used to playing and a couple did look short on energy cos they are playing every game, Robbo, Gini, Milly & Thiago

I thought Gini and Milner looked shagged from the start. I don’t think that helped.
Shaqiri looked completely out of postion.
Firmino looked crap, why does he do a 360° turn just to under hit a pass to Salah 90% of the time?
Other than that we looked ok but that wasn’t enough!

Why oh why did Salah miss that chance at the start of the match, that would have sunk the seagulls.

I did predict the game would be much toucher than last 2 but 1972 had a moan about it. :money_mouth_face:

But isn’t the point Klopp did change his formation?

Shaqiri out wide left
Bobby back central
Thiago back as the no.6
Jones still on the bench after changing the game against West Ham with his dribbling.

All of them made no sense, Shaqiri wants to play central and as such Robbo was left on his own all game and we had zero threat on the left. Bobby was so deep, and kept losing the ball he was more a liability than anything. Thiago had less affect on the game (still managed 2 great chance creations), and it meant we had Milner (who couldn’t sprint) and Gini who looked like his games had caught up with his legs static next to him.

Seemed really bizarre choices. The obvious switch was Jones for Milner and leaving Origi wide left (and telling him to go and stay wide).

It was compounded by too slow with subs, and them being Oxlade/Origi who basically did fuck all and instead of stretching the game made us even narrower… Ox literally does 1 thing, gets the ball, runs at their defence, loses it…

Yes we’ve had terrible luck with injuries but surely Robbo gets rested against 17th in the league at home? Especially with Hendo next to Tsimikas to guide him through the game? Likewise overplaying Gini or Milner when Jones is fit and a game changer.

I do really worry Klopp has a mental block against these types of teams, its that or the players aren’t doing what he asks… Yet he plays the same team, so absolutely zero consequences of players ignoring his instructions… He cannot be asking Trent to cross v’s 4 central defenders all game can he?

Definitely one of Gini poorer games, maybe after the booking he was being careful.

After 5 mins you could see the pattern of Brighton’s play and I knew it would be a struggle.

It just screamed West Brom and Burnley.

Agree with Robbo says we’re out of the title race and if we lose Sunday we will be 10 points behind and they will have a game in hand so it will be all over.
