Post Match: Liverpool v Burnley (EPL 21/1/21 8pm)

Origi miss summarizes the situation this season.

Some posts in this thread are more embarrassing than the team’s finishing right now. Reading about negligence and incompetence, that we’ve been found out, that Klopp has no answer for Sean fucking Dyche and other similar pearls is more infuriating than anything witnessed on the pitch in the past weeks.

The game itself was more of the same shit. And that will remain the case for as long as we keep hitting a mental block whenever we enter the opposition’s box. Whatever is wrong, it’s in the players’ head. Their decision making is inexplicably bad and their execution is Sunday league’s. They were periods during which we moved the ball better and looked like we were going to score, we found players early in space and in good position to threaten; only to completely fuck up the subsequent pass, or cross or shot. Same story as in the last games. It has become a huge problem as it’s visibly affecting confidence which in its turn makes it even more difficult to snap out of it.

What’s making it worse is the fucking refs. We can’t seem to buy a correct decision in our favour, never mind the 50-50. The shithead who won the penalty should have been sent off for what was yet another dangerous tackle on Thiago’s ankle.

Klopp raised this in his post-game presser, he said that its decision making (or lack of)… The forwards aren’t proactively attacking space, they are reacting (and doing it slowly). We did work it on occasion and cut it back but it went behind/in front of our attackers.

He was very clear we had a game plan to work space behind their fullbacks and drill it back, yet we didn’t.

He also specifically mentioned Trent and the crossing as some sort of “easy” choice of hit and hope someone gets on the end.

@Arminius said something in the in-match thread about how he was largely done with this season. Football is supposed to provide enjoyable escapism from things that might be troubling us (and there are many of these for lots of people right now). I totally agree with him. I wish it wasn’t the case, but it is.

Interesting. In some weird kind of way I’ll take some solace in the fact that I’m seeing the same things Klopp is.

Playing “safe” is a sign of low confidence.

Yeah without doubt when you lose confidence you wont try something different you will revert back to the safe option.
Everything is slow and safe at the moment. Lost count the amount of times we broke but rather than drive on or try a shot we’d pass it sideways and then again, and again and again by which time Burnley got back in numbers.

Yep. Lost count of times TAA could have attacked the by line but didn’t.

That’s where I would be focusing if I were Klopp I think. Working on some subtle changes that makes it feel new to the lads but also pushing them into attack these spaces.

People calling for Klopp to be sacked are complete fucking morons

Exactly, compare that tackle by the thug Barnes, to what Fabinho was booked for. He should’ve been red carded before half time.

They exist?

Lets not give the scum and bitter fans who call some radio shows the satisfaction of us talking about them. They’re not fans of this club. No real fan wants to sack the best coach in the world and the best acquisition we made since Shankly. He is the only reason that got us the title, and he will bring in more titles and trophies for us in the future.

Now you see I just don’t get that. We’ve been here for many years because we’re, at heart, Liverpool fans. I’ve seen enough seasons when we’ve given up on the league before December. Where there’s life there’s hope my friend. One good result could be the catalyst to a title charge AND we’re still in both the FA Cup and the CL.

Golden sky.

I have been avoiding our post match threads recently because what hurts more than our current form is having people who is now questioning whether this team and manager is good enough. I think we have to draw a line, the results and performances now and recently have been bad but they are good enough, have been and always will be one of the best teams and managers in our history.

Our recent performances are not down to just one single factor, many factors come together and caused this drastic drop. We will all have our opinions what could be done to reverse this and you could jolly well be right but this is more that just a ‘do 1 + 1 = 2’ kind of situation. We have to get behind this team ever more, not asking you to ignore the bad performances or that you cannot critique objectively, but if there is anytime in recent times to make relevant YNWA, it is now.

No surprise to me we perform better against the big teams.

Lower teams now learn a low and narrow block. They do not play out from the back so we get little chance to press and transition. When the ball goes to the fullbacks the defence is set so it’s a hopeful ball. Before it was a ball into space behind a turning back 4 in transition. So not static.

Why is it working? Well I think the long ball out used to get hoovered up by VVD and sent back. So we built pressure. Now a forward like Wood gets a chance to hold it up, flick it on and the pressure is lost.

Couple that with the loss of real drive and leadership from Hendo and VVD we are in trouble.

Against the big boys they come out more.

Do you actually (have a quick think about this) believe that you can suffer mental exhaustion from something you did last week? Last month? Last year? I take a few days off after our silly season (18-20 hour days for 2 weeks) then back on the game. Suffering a year on? Nah.

I’m not questioning the validity of mental trauma or its long term effects but playing football? Nope, not having it.

No, I’m not a psychologist btw. God forbid we should have opinions on things we don’t hold doctorates in.

They are so ungrateful, after all he has done to the club. He had start from the beginning. We will be very sorry when he retires from here in 2024.

All fair points. Well made.

I still camp in the side of the debate that insists a central defender is required, and is the root cause of this ‘slump’, just the bounce it would give the squad would be good.

I’m resigned to that not happening now, i hope it’s not for lack of funding as I genuinely believe these guys deserve to be backed up after everything they have done.

Regards upecamano, the point wasn’t theactual player, but a signing of that pedigree… we picked up Robbo for 8 and I know we had a few months to bed him in, but if we didn’t have that luxuary I’m sure he would’ve made a good fist of it.

Yep, in fact my first thoughts even before the whistle was blown was it might be a bit of a monkey off our back AND thank fuck it didn’t happen to a Manchester team or Everton.

I appreciate that not everyone will feel the way I do. We’re all different and have different personal circumstances. I think winning the league was such a culmination of emotional investment into hope for the last 30 years that it has left me exhausted…I was ready to go again this season though and I think if it wasn’t for everything else right now I wouldn’t be inclined to consciously uncouple from football this season (is that what the modern phrase is these days?!).

I haven’t always turned to football as an outlet, but right now it’s pretty much the only one. So when what is supposed to be an outlet provides more aggravation than elation it’s something I can do without. And it’s not just the thought of us not winning everything (or anything)…I’ve experienced that before. It’s the fact that, by rights, we should be winning this league at a canter but anything that could have fucked us, has fucked us. I don’t think I have the energy to be angry at injustice after injustice as well as piss poor performances, with little prospect of improvement because our best players have been (and continue to be) deliberately targeted with assault. That’s just how I feel.
