Post Match: Liverpool v Crystal Palace (EPL 15/7/22 8pm)

Everybody- even the best teams- plays the same way against us and has done for years. We should be used to it by now.

Heā€™s not good enough for this level and was caught out numerous times yesterday and by the second half was going to ground in panicky challenges nearly every time the ball came near him. I canā€™t really blame him for the goal as Iā€™ve seen us concede that line before but yeah, if weā€™re going to play with that line against teams that are just waiting for a quick ball through or over, which we are going to do almost every other week, heā€™s going to be a liability every other week.

Second game of the season, before which we had a ridiculous number of players injured. We need to bring reinforcements in now because we have players who will be injured several times over the course of the season, some who will be out for months. Itā€™s the same risk management that was applied two years ago after Lovren left and we didnā€™t bring any central defenders in until the last day of the transfer window.

Was going to mention him on my post above as well. Whisper it quietly but heā€™s been awful for a while now; poor decision making, getting dribbled past easily and no pace whatsoever. He made Eze look like Zidane in the build up to that goal. The rest of our midfield being sent AWOL by that turn as well was also pretty crap as well, mind you. I think the lad was left all alone in the middle of Anfield with no Liverpool players within 20 meters of him. Fuck knows how that happens.

It could be me but it seems to get harder and harder to break them down, luckily we brought in NĆŗƱez, oh wait ā€¦ :innocent:

But what if the right reinforcements are not available, we have to do it with the players we have, perhaps a change of tactic with so many players out.

100% agree with you but not solely at Trent. This is a team wide issue in my book. Time and time again we compress the opposition defense to the edge of their penalty box only to try some pass that has next to no chance of succeeding and offering the chance of a breakaway.

I think we really need to get smarter against teams like this as we get undone time and time again by the same issues / counter tactics.

It belongs nowhere.

The negatives have been discussed at length already, so Iā€™ll try focussing on the positives:

  • Itā€™s two games now that things havenā€™t been going well for us, that we find ourselves in a losing position, but still find a way to come back into the game. With slightly more luck, we could have won the game at Fulham even though we didnā€™t really deserve it from our overall performance (Hendo shot on the bar right at the end), and also the one against Crystal Palace, with a good performance after Nunezā€™ dismissal. As a matter of fact, itā€™s only a lack of composure in front of goal, combined with bad luck and CP converting their only chance in the first half which led to that scenario scenario. We hit the bar or the post three times. Another day, these attempts will result in three goals.
  • The teamā€™s reaction after Nunezā€™ red card was exceptional. Thatā€™s what differentiates us from the current manc team for instance. The lads have that never say die attitude, and find a way to come back. Yesterday, with ten men on the pitch, it wasnā€™t enough to take the three points, but these last thirty minutes make me optimistic for the next games.
  • Diaz. I was a bit desperate for him, because his attempts at goal since the start of the season hadnā€™t been crowned with the success they deserved until his goal. Always a late block, shots narrowly wide or on the bar / the post. He seemed cursed. But the way how he took the game by the scruff of the neck after Darwinā€™s dismissal was out of this world really, the finish as sweet as it gets. But his whole game was extraordinary. Iā€™m really looking forward to see how this goal might liberate him. The big Uruguayan lump will be out of the way for the next games, so that will create space again for Mo and Luis to get inside and make other attempts of that kind. Hopefully Bobby will be back next week-end to complement them!
  • Elliot turns out to be the talent he was hyped up to be. Especially during the first half hour, he was impressive. While I found the midfield combo of Milner, Fab and Hendo not to be a well-functioning one, he really impressed me with his moves, the way how he was fighting for the ball, and then doing something meaningful with it. Heā€™s also very calm and levelheaded. Darwin could do worse than to inspire himself from this ladā€™s coolness on the pitch. Elliot has a future in this team without a doubt. :+1:

If we can recover a few bodies into the squad for next game (ie. Hendo, Keita, Gomez and Bobby), we should be fine next week.

Fuck me that was a depressing read

Oakley Cannonierā€™s time to shine!

Or if Gomez had been fully fit for the 90ā€¦ If I recall correctly heā€™s our fastest defender?

Elliott ran himself into the ground. Up until probably 60 minute mark he was first to every second ball and then used it intelligently. He was outstanding.

Would love to see Gomez get a chance, and sty fit, to establish himself as first choice for a while

It happened! For all of one game to get Mascherano sent offā€¦

Have you seen his injury record???

2018-19 was when he missed half their league gamesā€¦

I donā€™t think heā€™ll appear very much for a while yet, think theyā€™re still working on his recovery programme?

This is how it is in the PL unfortunately. Heā€™ll have to learn to deal with arseholes like Andersenā€¦
