I think to fully understand the bias in the country towards the city you have to be from there.
In a way, I’m quite well placed to assess it because I was born there, my family are from there, I grew up in the vicinity, and then studied and worked in different parts of the UK.
As I said in other posts, I’ve seen it and I’ve heard personally, and it’s not just a football thing. There’s a big scale of it, from the low level digs and mocking, to full on hatred.
Yes you get other regional stereotypes, but the operative word is stereotype not prejudice. Liverpool suffers from prejudice, in that people’s behaviour towards the city, and its people, is influenced by the stereotype.
It plays a part in what LFC suffers from the media, authorities and officials, and whilst Everton don’t suffer it, that’s because they’re not successful. In a way, Everton’s hatred towards LFC is actually an additional weapon for those with an agenda against LFC to use, at the very least as a way of rubbishing the regional prejudice argument.
In fact, it’s the saddest reflection of all of Everton as a club, that they’d rather LFC suffer from it, even if the broader extension of it affects the city as a whole. One small example would be that Evertonians would rather LFC missed out on Europe, even if it costs the city economy.
As to our players making more of an issue of it, the problem with that is that we all know they’d get booked any time they open their mouth, as Mane did.
As the media is part of it, the refs can pretty much do what they like. The biggest disappointment of all is ex-players who were made by the club, and who got their second careers in the media as a result, not only never mentioning it, but in fact going on so much about other issues that the poor decisions we’ve suffered get completely overlooked.
Nobody wants a Rafa type rant from Klopp, but the club has to find a way to address it. If I was involved with the running of the club, I’d be leaning on those ex players who are still involved in ambassadorial roles to start questioning things a bit more on air, without going full on victim.
It still rankles with me how Carragher started screaming at Souness when he spoke of the tackles at Everton. Not that Souness is any better, because he was way too damning of a side that actually played ok yesterday, we just suffered from the inevitable defensive frailty, the guaranteed poor decision, and the misfiring forward line which has been off it since Jota got injured.
To be honest, I’m not too bothered about not winning the league. But the clear campaign by officials to stop us getting into the top four, when it will knock the club back years, and inevitably lead to people at the club losing their jobs, and the city’s economy being affected, is utterly disgusting.
You know I don’t like this country very much, and have zero interest in its national side. But I try not to hate it, as it’s a destructive emotion. But it’s really hard not to, especially as it is such a hateful place itself.
