Post match: Liverpool v Galatasaray (UCL 18/3/26 8pm)

Only caught 2nd half.
Play like that every week and we will finish in top 4.
Thought Wirtz was great. Love his flicks and passing.
But Brighton is a test.

I clapped him off. You could tell by his face how bad it was.

Good man CDO. I don’t like our fans accusing him of play acting. It was clearly a serious injury.

Thought it was a fracture as soon as I saw it. Just the wrong timing in the movement on exactly the wrong place. I’m surprised they kept him on as long as they did

They got destroyed 4-0.

And it should have been at least 5-0, talk about fouls there wasn’t one on the goalie.

That’s… interesting.

Don’t take the bait RA

If that is true then why are the advertising hoardings allowed to be so dangerous? Surely there must be some sort of safety standards around hard furniture around the pitch? Not a good look for the stadium…

It was a freak accident and probably will never happen again.

Should have been 6-0 with the penalty.

Nah, Old Trafford is worse with its dangerously steep camber off the pitch.

Freak accident.

He has a point though. The accident is freakish, but something still doesn’t seem right about these boards. I mean if you can have your finger detached when entering in contact with them, then surely something needs to be done.

It’s of course not only a problem at Anfield, but lately, several players have crashed into them, and every time, I’ve feared for their health. The slope around the pitch accelerates the movement towards the boards if a player loses the control over his body in a challenge.

That I agree with. I guess it’s the nature of the self-draining, perfectly watered and manicured pitches that makes it rare-ish that a player will fly off the pitch. But given the nature of footballers seemingly getting bigger, stronger, faster, the likelihood of an ungainly high-speed “departure” from the pitch is highly likely to lead to injury.

The boards should be redesigned at the least.

With regard to the boards and the thumb injury, it is a freak accident, and at the same time, the design should be reviewed. If there is anything that can reasonably be done to help mitigate a future occurrence, it should be done.

The compensation claim for Galatasaray seems wide of the mark as we should not be liable for a freak accident. If the stadium has the requisite safety certificates and so on, and surely we do, then I can’t see what case they have.

On a sort of related note, thinking back to Leoni’s injury, I thought he got his stud caught in the seam between pitch and artificial turf that runs around the perimeter. After it happened I was hoping there would be a review, to see if something might change in the design to help prevent a future occurrence.

One final thought is that given the pace of play, it is possible the space between the pitch and the advertising hoardings might need to increase. There would be a significant implication, in terms of potentially losing the front row, but it feels like we are seeing more people hitting into the boards.

At the least it should be a red card offense for anyone who pushes someone on their way as they are going over the line at pace. I’ve seen that happen a few times, and it has looked very dangerous, but it hasn’t brought punishment yet, as far as I can tell.
