Post match: Liverpool v Leeds (EPL 1/1/26 5.30pm)

I’ll go back and see what others thought, but that wasn’t good enough today. Leeds defended in numbers and it was up to us to break them down, and we could not do that.

Wirtz has been playing well for a few weeks now, but today he was poor. That was a shame, as he could have been the difference today.

Ekitike is having a good season but I thought he was peripheral today.

Only Frimpong gets credit today. He looked dangerous on the right. I also gave Ngumoha a vote too, even though he came on late, because he looked quite bright and should be seeing more minutes than he is.

On the positive side (it was mostly a negative day) we didn’t concede a goal, and the point we did earn solidified fourth spot for now, while also gaining a point on Villa in third.

I’m on the wait and see bus with Slot, but today’s game definitely gave his detractors more ammunition.

Final comment will bleed into transfers for January:

Ordonez looks close. Good. We need a central defender.
In addition to that I would sign Adeyemi. Pace to burn, and we need to get behind opposition defenders, as this side to side stuff, in front of them, isn’t threatening enough.

That’s just two players. I could keep going, but I’m trying to be realistic.

The foul started outside the box, so if anything it would have been brought back for a free.

Not saying I don’t agree, but we were even worse when he was pulled though.

Eh? That was in the box.

Yeah, I acknowledged @Sweeting’s point already.

was a very poor performance

flashes of good play from Frimpong, Ekitike and a few other moments really dont hide the performance of the team.

the two or three runs Frimpong makes around the outside really is just basic stuff that should come about a few times every game as par for the course…right now its earning him MOTM votes…sums it all up really.

nothing really positive going on here right now

For the sake of variety…

I thought Konate played well. He was strong in his 1-to-1s and his distribution was pretty good.

Bradley was a strange one on that he tended to go inside quite a lot more than I would have thought sensible but he seem to make it work.

Robo was steady enough. Thought that when Gapko and Kerkez were there, they reverted to get inot each others space - an issue that seemed to be solving itself.

Virg was his usual self. Steady and strong when he needed to be, A bit of a royal on accasion but on the whole ok.

Concerned that in these situations with the low blocks, we’re overly dependent on the individual ability of Wirtz.

We also need movement around him in the final third, and its lacking…

Four shots on target. That’s just not acceptable.
The lack of intensity and desire to win the game was there for everyone to see. Just what does Slot say to them before the game and at half time? I can’t imagine him being very inspiring.

I wouldn’t call it very poor on reflection.
It was ineffective…

“You would like to start the year with a win but it was difficult. I don’t think we were able to play many times through their low block. When we did we didn’t have enough bodies in front of goal and others times we were unfortunate.” slot

Slow, ponderous, devoid of imagination, turgid and utterly lacking in urgency. One dimensional would actually be a compliment. Perhaps the plan is to shatter the space time dimension and play in zero dimensions.

Great song, and because Slot has barely used him, plus his nice volleyed goal at the start of the season… it has all added up to the player growing in the affection of fans, probably beyond what is deserved.

I thought he had one threatening moment today, beating the left back on the outside, and he had a strong shout for a penalty, but Kavanagh couldn’t wait to wave it away.

He may go back to Italy, on loan to Juve, especially if we sign another attacker.

It’s Kaufmanesque. I appreciate the artistry and commitment to the bit
