Post match: Liverpool v Leeds Utd (EPL 29/10/22 7.45pm)

Napoli, Spurs, Derby County and Southampton.

How many wins …

I’d settle for Spurs and Soton.

Derby….just about.

This. Why give up even before the games are played?

For all those trying to pinpoint the reason for the awful start to the season. I’d suggest you listen to the man who knows best. (And for the poster who suggests we should see Salah and van Dijk , ffs mate check yer head.)

From TIA ;

Speaking after the game, Klopp pointed out the Reds’ persistent injury problems this season, with Diogo Jota , Luis Diaz and Joel Matip among those currently sidelined.

“We play every three days. It is a brutal season for us because we have had injuries from the first day and some players we have had to rush back,”

“But we have to fight through this and we will.

“So many things are unlike us in this moment. I am sorry it is like this, but that is the situation. I am not sure how deep you can dig, but we will. It is like it is and we will work on solutions.”

In another interview, Klopp further explained his belief that some players have been “overplayed,” name-checking Harvey Elliott as someone he clearly feels has been relied on too heavily so far this season.

Thiago has been ill, up front the same play all the time – they are the three strikers we have left.”

The boss had no complaints about the result, admitting his team’s defending was simply not good enough in the build-up to Leeds winner.

His statement that Liverpool “cannot control this kind of game at the moment” is the brutal reality for a team that came so close to creating history last season.

“The boys tried, we had good possession and had big chances but, in the end, if it is 1-1 and you defend the situation around the second goal like this, then you leave everything open,” he added.

“In the end, it was two versus one in the box and they can finish off the situation. The problem is we cannot control this kind of game at the moment, and that’s obviously a problem.”

Interesting response from Trent. Seems to back up the weariness angle.

But whose fault is this? He names two midfielders, when he was the bloody reason we didn’t refresh the midfield and are again relying on Thiago, Keita and Oxlade who are never available. So it’s not a surprise we are overplaying those who are available.

The forwards is just bad luck but the primarily fault of not refreshing the midfield is down to Klopp - He wanted Thiago, he went to bat for Hendo for a 4 year extension, he refused signings once Tchouameni fell through… The engine room has rusted through on his watch.

Who made the decision to up the intensity of pre-season in the far east and basically break the squad??

Just had to give it a bit of time to cool down and think about what has gone on this season. In the goalkeeping department we are ok. Allison has been good but I thought he may have done better with their second goal last night. We seem to have two central defenders who do not want to make any physical challenges on opposing forwards. Choosing to stand two yards from them and letting them pass or shoot. It takes our back four at least a dozen square passes before we get into the opposition’s half. Joe Gomez has been responsible for four goals at least from loosing possession this season. We have a right back who is one of the finest passes of the football in the world but hasn’t got a clue how to defend. Ninety percent of our opponents attack down our right side of defence because they know where our weaknesses are. With the way our midfield is surely its worth pushing Trent into midfield for a few games and either Ramsey or Milly in the right back position. In my opinion the only defender playing anything like is Robbo. As everyone is saying the midfield has lost it’s legs. I think we need to make Henderson our defensive midfielder play Thiago when he’s fit and Trent pushed forward on the right side. Harvey has done well for us but struggled badly last night. A mix of the youngsters until some of the injuries return and Mo and Nunez up front. As it is mid table is the best we are going to do and I don’t have high hopes of us doing much in the UCL. Keita and AOC really should be shipped out in the January sales.

With eight midfielders on the books he obviously thought it was enough for any eventuality. The thing with Tchouameni was a real kick in the balls , but more surprising was we didn’t have an alternative lined up.

Klopp’s already admitted he fucked up and has apologised. How about we just cut him some slack instead of piling on ?

Edit: Totally agree with the Hendo contract. If you want to point to Klopp’s biggest fault then it’s probably the loyalty he shows his players.

That old adage about lies, damn lies, and statistics comes to mind.

We all saw how we played.

In the Forest game we were utterly toothless. The keeper didn’t even have to have the customary worldie performance against us to keep us out.

Last night the midfield was like a revolving door…just let anyone through. We could have easily conceded more.

Other than the goal and Nunez’s non-lob we didn’t have a lot of proper dangerous shots on goal.i bet that comes from a different approach to chance creation than what we used to do. And I feel that’s driven by (yet again) the midfield not performing.

Klopp is trying different formation to spark the whole unit to life but the midfield engine is sputtering.

It’s not what he says, it’s how he says it.

He doesn’t just say he is happy with the squad or dismiss it with a platitude. He gets really angry about questions over his midfield and journalists questioning his boys.

Then there is the likelihood of FSG refusing Jurgen Klopp money to strengthen. I can’t see that.

Then there is the fact that he holds his hands up and admits he was wrong late in the window.

Anyone saying the reason we didn’t strengthen midfield is because the owners withheld funds is just doing so because they already have an anti-FSG agenda and want to blame FSG.

Hope that is tongue in cheek mate!

I assume that this is directed at me? Maybe you should read it again before posting something misleading.

It’s got to be worth a try.
Gomez in the main has been shocking at CB but I think he’s actually done well when deputising at RB. So possibly 3 options at RB to try and make us more secure defensively and of course Konate coming back in at CB (and hopefully staying fit).
Would Trent have the athleticism/engine that we desperately need in midfield? I’d like to give it a few games to find out.

‘Apart from Alisson, anyone from the senior group who can’t produce anymore. Van Dijk and Salah included. Forever grateful for what they’ve achieved on their time at the club but if they can’t deliver anymore, I would wish them well and send them on the way.’

?

You know it is about fatigue but it’s a mixture of physical and mental pressure which has affected different players in different ways.

Over the last few years we played like a thing of beauty that lifted the heart and the soul. We had belief because we won…and won….and won.

I was at the final in Paris and apart from the shit show by the French police and UEFA it was the atmosphere in the stadium…. completely flat, Almost like we were attending a funeral…surreal almost. It was the point at which the strand of success snapped for us. The way we played, well…it’s like now. As if all the magic had departed.

Losing that in the way that we did and the circumstances around our fans mistreatment added to the weight of loss. Waking up the following day and realising that we had won the minor trophies but not the big ones added to the sense of disappointment. We had not snatched a famous victory from the jaws of defeat…it’s wasn’t like us…we do the impossible!

Fuck knows what all that means but I think it’s on our back for now. We need to reset the mission, find purpose again. Enjoy the game again, not just the players but us fans too…

We need to come out of the traps after the World Cup and go for everything again…. it’s fucking impossible but it’s us…why not?

It states quite clearly that we should part ways with whomever can’t deliver anymore. Or do you disagree with that?

Whichever way you attempt to parse it , you singled out Salah and van Dijk. I didn’t mislead anyone.

I’m not sure what to say.

Although not a guarantee, things can only get better
