Post match: Liverpool v Man City (EPL 8/2/26 4.30pm)

I have three f/u questions.

  1. Overspent on who?
  2. Lost revenue how and on which aspects of the club?
  3. What principles were revised?
  1. It was £450 million, to the extent we still had obvious gaping holes, the Jan window just closed and nothing was addressed, because we’ve no money, from the £450m splurged last summer.
  2. We wont make top 4 after today. No CL money next season. Thats if we even hold for Europa.
  3. Press, intensity, quick turnaround, fast counterattacks - menacing to play against - a right fuckign handful we were. Now we look like that Aussie rock band Tame Impala.

The only positive going for us at the moment is today was the last big opponent this season in the Prem, and we have a relatively lowkey run in. But we aren’t breaking into the top 4, not with how resurgent both Chavski and Manure are. We’re 6, and thats at best.

We’ve gone out like a safety match.

I only saw the second half and I thought we were quite good. We passed well and were on top, and Szobo’s free kick was sublime.

After the goal City came onto us a bit more. Probably a combo of they needed to, and also we were tiring a bit.

They equalized - our defensive line wasn’t good, and then got a late winner from a penalty. Even though the fella wasn’t going to retrieve the ball he kicked past Alisson, our goalie came out and took the played down, giving the ref a reason to point to the spot.

I hated Szoboszlai’s red as he will face a ban when we don’t need it. Not sure why Alisson was on walkabout, though I suppose if he had popped up with a goal like the one he scored against Bournemouth years ago, he’d have been a hero. The gamble didn’t pay off.

What about the bigger picture?

Well, we went toe to toe with Man City (I only saw the second half) and I thought we played some good stuff, but we fell short in the end. A one-off loss to Man City, while not great, is not the end of the world. But …

It’s another data point in the Slot in or Slot out argument, and a little gap has opened up to top five. We can and should still fight on, as top five is far from over, and anything can happen in the CL and the FA Cup is about to get going again.

Overall though, it feels like it is slipping away from Slot. I hope we can still get the points to see us qualify for next season’s CL.

Wow!

If we have no money as you say, how did we get to sign Jeremy Jacquet?

Wow, you have intricate knowledge of the financing of this and when the balance is to be paid?

When we do it… we get a red card..! Madness

I don’t like a pile on. I don’t like the discourse to turn nasty, and I don’t like the casual disrespect shown to a man who has not only delivered a league title but has steered the club through some desperately challenging situations. It’s fair to say that that during his watch there have been some dizzying highs and some heartbreaking lows, and he has never conducted himself with anything less than decency and dignity.

I’ve been upfront about where I think he has gone wrong, and I’ve posted about what I think his mistakes are, and I’ve been clear about what I think the pros and cons of a managerial change would be. Would I sack him? If we don’t get top four/five and Alonso is available, then on balance yes, I would.

But I think there have been failings all over the show, and I think Slot has been let down by the club, those under him have let him down and those above him have let him down, and he’s also let himself down, of course. But we should be clear that the biggest reason he goes is probably that it’s just the easiest thing to change. There should be an investigation into the sheer fucking hubris and arrogance at all levels of the club that has led us here.

What was the excuse…oh yes…not in a goal scoring position…how do they know…can they see into the future…what was he going to do if he did get in the penalty area…

Bang on, all threads closed until further notice, but would add, all of this was within a certain someone’s remit. Id look there first.

They just saw what was created over Klopp’s tenure and wildly underestimated how difficult it was to create and how much nous is needed to create that whole package.

It really bugs me…all this one rule for one team but not for others…

The fallout is clear to see. I wouldn’t be surprised that J W Henry is already phoning up Billy Hogan and Mike Edwards on wtf is going on in his investment?

Top 5 should make it. It will still be a struggle to get that high imo.

If Henry is phoning anyone it’s Michael Edwards. He runs their football operation.

Win the CL and we qualify for next year’s CL?

Just my opinion, but I think all of them - Slot, Hughes, Edwards, probably half a dozen others - were a bit guilty of over estimating their own genius.

I don’t think there was any overestimating of Klopp’s tenure. His departure was the cue to totally restructure everything, but I think winning the league at a canter in Slot’sfirst season caused them to think they could get away with anything in terms of the squad and the football.

why not a conference call between Hogan and Edwards for the potential money losses for not being in the UCL?That will impact the god-damn bottomline.

lololol…Win the CL? The sides that won the CL excelled in the basics and had a strong mentality to win it.

Do you see that in this squad and manager?

For the crime of having a bad half - he was bombed out the team altogether. Between being subbed at half time and January of that year he played 182 minutes total - two League Cup games and two minutes at the end of the Leverkusen game in the CL when we were 4-0 up. I don’t know how he could have made it clearer that he had absolutely no interest in Quansah.

How many players have played far worse than Quansah did that day and not faced any repercussions? In my opinion he chose the youngest player on the team and froze him out to send a message of being a strong manager. I guess if he was consistent in this standard it would be at least understandable but I’ve yet to see him show this strength with other players despite plenty of far worse performances since that day. The inconsistency is what makes me say he bullied Quansah, and yes I’m bitter about it.

I agree with you I think there is a decent chance he becomes a Liverpool player again but I doubt it’ll be for this manager.
