One more thing about Newcastle which I saw at HT when I always have a look at both team’s average positions…

They displayed a different shape, it was not really their usual combination between 4-3-3 and 4-4-2.

It looked a lot like a back 3 of Trippier, Schar (playing central of the 3, but deep) and Burn (moved aside to do a more direct job on Salah, because he’s often our target for long balls). Murphy and Livramento placed almost as wing backs.

Barnes obviously getting the freedom more inside that Gordon usually gets (played almost as a central second striker in the last league game against them). Joelinton protecting that behind.

Howe said they worked on set-pieces 2 weeks before this final. Carra made a good prediction that it could be key and decide the game. Unfortunately.

Every one of them will play every minute while on international duty with the exception of Jota who, ironically, is the one player who needs to play himself into form.

Great insight from ā€˜Carra’.

Coming next week, ā€˜Having great defenders could mean you concede less goals’.

I just felt it basically scrapped any advantage we got from the playoff legs.

First time I saw Burn being marked by Macca, I said to my kid ā€œthere’s your mismatchā€.

But really, we lost the match in the midfield.

Turned off at the final whistle.
Had the misfortune to see the absolute wankfest on the news though.
Did Gordon do a full kit wanker Terry impression?

Yeah Burn had no chance

I do agree that their midfield got the better of ours overall, but overall I felt their biggest threat was Burns at set peices. Had we switched Macca and put someone better at heading on him like Jota, or someone with a bit more physical presence like Grav or Quansah we prevent that first goal.

Going in at H/T 0-0 totally changes the game in my opinion as they don’t come out in the 2nd half boyed by the crowd or by having taken the lead.

The thing with putting 5’7" Mac alongside 6’7" Burn, and as we have seen with Ibou the other week… Its not that big a mis-match if he gave him a slight nudge when his feet have left the ground.
Burn got the header because Mac never stuck like glue to him.!

Love it, but 60, he looks 75, thats what happens when you support Newcastle or any other team than Liverpool

As per Slot, it was never about the man marked man not getting the header.

Three days after that loss, couldn’t get myself to fully accept it. But to console meself, the feeling of losing it to the barcodes is kinda OK, as it wasn’t to cheaty, chelski, and especially manure. Besides that, it is their first trophy in 70 years, can’t really begrudge them that.
Our lads have given us a lot to smile,by getting into a cup final, by doing well at the start of the new CL, but sadly losing to a very energetic PSG, who don’t operate in a same highly competitive league.
We march on

Agree with all that, but can’t stand sportwashing clubs.

Having lived in Newcastle for a while, you can’t underestimate just how much this trophy will mean to people. I don’t begrudge them at all. I just wish their club had more respectable owners.

Some of these fans are 60/70 year old and they have supported their club through thick & thin, so I don’t begrudge them their trophy no matter who the owners are, it is the fans that it means the most to

True, but also 2 of my mates from back home are Newcastle fans, and they’re a pair of cunts, so that automatically makes all geordie fans cunts.

It is also the fans who make sportswashing work, by defending whoever their owners are as long as they win them a few trophies, so… Depends on which fans.

For the Newcastle fans having Michael Ashley as their previous owner, they just wanted someone else, they may not agree with who the owners are but still support their team.

Within reason, I’ll support Liverpool never mind who is the owner.
