Post match: Liverpool v Newcastle (ELC 16/3/25 4.30pm)

It’s important to remember that Real Madrid claim a lot of those wins from back when the European Cup was an invitational quasi-friendly tournament, and nobody else entered it.

Also wasnt there a thing where Franco bribed refs and everything else back in years gone by?..as in eufa and fifa ?

A lot being how many, 3, 4?

There isn’t anything subjective on this.

Didnt they win the first 5 or something like that? (Back when it was a 4 team invitational comp)

Isn’t is five? Back from the 50s when it was more like a version of the Super Cup?

It was never a quasi-friendly tournament. Yes, there were teams that couldn’t or wouldn’t take part as champions, but it still had teams from all around Europe. Winning it then is as much of an achievement as winning it now. Otherwise, we might as well as accept that football begun in 1992.

When I suppose if Arteta counts Charity Shields, then yeah.

Real have 15, and to my mind 10 of them are legit.

The first five weren’t quite full European competition, as it was a latent thing, somewhere between friendly/invitational/competition. To the degree it was competitive, there was not much of a burning sense, from all the teams, that they were going to go and win it, but rather just have a bit of a jolly.

Real Madrid had a smashing team, with Di Stefano, but I’m still calling ‘hmmm…’ on their first five.

Watched footage of their 7-3 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, think it was their fifth win, looked more like an exhibition match.

So it’s like they have 10, still quite out of reach.
But you get the point, it’s a better feel to be in a smallest possible group of royalty.
I got bummed when Barca and Bayern caught up with our 5, and it felt great while we were roomies at the penthouse with Real and Milan. Would like that reunion to happen, leaving Barca and Real Madrid behind.

I had the same thought reading that.

I don’t know much about the very early ones but I know the 1959-60 European Cup they only had to win 4 games to win it all - one of those being against a team from Luxembourg.

I believe they were funded by Franco’s government at the time weren’t they? Or had some sort of weird connection to them at least.

They played 7 games after getting a bye in the preliminary round as champions. England was represented by Wolves, who were demolished by Barcelona in the quarter final.

You’re right I didn’t factor in the matches being two legs.

Nasty collision with Sanchez.
How Colombia does not have multiple players red carded in games is a mystery to me

Was it head related? If so it should be fine?

Night one and we’ve lost 3 guys potentially.

Oh right that’s cool. Might avoid the second game due to concussion rules as well.

However being 7 days he’s fine for the next PL.
