Post Match: Liverpool v Newcastle (EPL 1/1/24 8pm)

Some teams are absolutely going to get pantsed by us.

This is the correct metric to compare against.

Incidentally, we put 44% of our shots on target (40% excluding penalties).

Jarrod Bowenā€™s performance compared to his xG has been ridiculous this season. Carrying West Ham.

Notable as well that West Hamā€™s conversion rate is paired with a bottom half of the table shot volume.

Fair enough, we all see different things. My observation was from being at the game and watching his involvement, body language and movement. You canā€™t always get that perspective from a TV screen. I think the lad has talent itā€™s maybe just the expectation on his shoulders that he finds a burden. Not every player with talent makes a successful transition to Liverpool.
I do think that he could, the Newcastle game at their place showed how good he is. It just depends on him finding his inner Darwin by shutting out the world and believing he is the bestā€¦

Salah leaving for AFCON poses a huge question, who is worthy of filling his magic boots when he is not around?

Relax. Itā€™s sorted. Cheap tooā€¦

No individual can deliver the same incredible consistency. Mo was awful in first half then turned it on and won the game in second. We need a combined approach when heā€™s away. Jota back, Diaz and Nunez finishing more chances

For me the clear Mo deputy is Harvey Elliott. If Klopp starts messing about with Diaz, Jota or Nunez on the right, Iā€™ll be a bit disappointed. Itā€™s a chance for Harvey to stake his claim to be Moā€™s long term successor, and Klopp has played him there in Moā€™s absence previously. Iā€™m excited to see what he can do there.

Last time Mo went to AFCON, Klopp played Ox on the right, and he did a great job contributing to wins while Mo was away. Harvey can do the same.

Youā€™d think by now fans would trust Kloppā€™s judgement regardless who he decides to play there and feel confident in his reasoning. If he feels Harvey deserves to get the nod and is capable of producing, then he will.

I donā€™t want to underplay how important Salah is to us. But we did it in the CL without Salah. That is the strength of a Klopp team, no matter the superstar, they are never bigger than the team and the superstars know it. And the only way to know who can replace Salah, is to actually face up to it. We will know very soon whether this squad is up to the challenge.

For me one of the main reasons to play Harvey (or Dom) in Salahs position is to be able to bring on two senior attackers from bench.

Can have a huge impact on our games as seen recently.

I just want to see what Harvey can do with a run in that position. Everyone is talking about it needing this Ā£100m player or that Ā£100m player when Mo leaves. To me, I think Elliott is a special talent, and that is probably his best position.

I was reading an article some years ago, comparing the strikers of different top teams in top leagues, in terms of conversion rate, and the conclusion was that 25% was the conversion rate to be considered a world class striker. Now considering that some of those shots are not by forwards, then for the whole team maybe the rate to be considered a top teams could be down to 20%, or whereabouts.
Granted, that was maybe almost a decade ago, so I donā€™t know if the numbers still check or whether it became better or worse (worse I doubt, but you never know).

Around about 40% looks to be where most strikers are. Funnily enough Nunez is actually above that mark.

His underlying numbers are essentially the same as Ollie Watkins but Watkinsā€™ shots on target are going in the goal at nearly double the rate.

I think that just goes to prove the point, that one player does not make a team. that entire match, we out-worked Newcastle. out-worked, out-smarted and took advantage of their weaknesses.

some good players just donā€™t fit the system, they canā€™t wrap their heads around it. Luis Alberto has made a good career for himself at Lazio, for example. Good player, just didnā€™t fit here. Gravenberg needs time, he has the athleticism just doesnā€™t see where the weak areas on the pitch are yet. he isnā€™t reading the play well enough. you see Endo and you wonder how an appearingly-unremarkable player can always be there to break up playā€¦ itā€™s because he knows how to read the play. read the player, what foot he favors and which way you anticipate the turn. And getting ahead of it. being reactionary always means youā€™re a half-step behind.

This seems to mean that Nunez knows where the net is, but fails to put it where the keeper canā€™t get it.
So he needs to improve more on beating the keeper, and not so much on finding the target.

An interesting thing to note is that he has a better shots on target percentage than Saka, and the same conversion rate, yet Nunez is considered shit by many (even within our own fans) and Saka is considered the revelation of the last two years and perhaps Arsenalā€™s star player (if not the star player then definitely one of the star players that made them contenders these last two years).

I think most of the LFC fansā€™ criticism of Nunez is his missed chances for opportunities where you would expect a goal as the result. I donā€™t critique his effort or enthusiasm, he has a way to go before he hits Suarez-esque levels but as long as heā€™s getting the chances then heā€™s doing 50% of the job correctly. But those sittersā€¦ oh man some of those are Joe Allen-ish.

Well I agree and said many times Iā€™m as frustrated as anyone with those misses, but so many people exaggerate and say heā€™s shit, thatā€™s even more frustrating. He does need support too, thankfully he gets it from Klopp and his teammates, but getting it from fans is important too.

oh he doesā€¦you can hear Nunez, Nunez, Nunez quiet often. heā€™s likely his own toughest critic though. I wouldnā€™t be able to have a social media account if I was a pro athlete
