Post Match: Liverpool v Newcastle (EPL 1/1/24 8pm)

He arrived as a player with a reputation of being immensely talented but a bit loose with the ball and so was right at the top of the BL stats for losing possession in the final third. We’ve started to see a more of that creep into his game the last month or so, but what never goes away is the talent and ridiculous athleticism. I think it was the second goal where the ball broke into the midfield where it should have been Bruno’s. Dom didnt only get to it first though, he absolutely powered away from Bruno to start the counter attack and a few strides later broke into the newcastle box with a run that pulled the newcastle players away from the ball creating the space on the other side Nunez found himself in. It is sobering to think that with our midfield in place from last season Bruno picks up a second ball, has time to turn and now we’re having to defend with them in a dangerous area in our half

There is a trope in football that good finishers are created not developed and yet every forward you see given the label of a “natural goal scorer” will bristle at it, frustrated at the lack of acknowledgement of the work they put in (hours spent throwing apples at the bin). For lots of strikers, especially those with more to their game, it doesn’t come until later. For a lot of Drogba’s career he carried the same criticism as Darwin is getting now…impossible to play against but not reliable with the chances he got. By his late 20s though he had developed into that complete striker and got at least 1 top scorer award.

So Darwin definitely has time to continue to improve this part of his game. He could be a 30 goal a season player, but even if he settles as a 15 a season guy he’s still got more than enough to his game for that to be worth his spot, especially in a team that is built on spreading the attacking threat around all the forwards. And for the all people who say you cannot win things with your main striker scoring only that many, I give you…

Like the previous game against Newcastle?

Cheaper than losing your bollocks.

The reason it was not a red is because a DOGSO that results in a penalty is not given as a red anymore and hasnt been for about 3 or 4 years (caveat is that it still is a red if there is no attempt to play the ball e.g. shirt pull rather than a missed tackle). The reason is it was viewed the triple jeopardy of a likely goal, loss of a player for the rest of the match, and a one match suspension was too harsh.

He went out with a predetermined idea of how to ref the game, made a series of bad decisions as a result, saw it starting to get arsey and so then swung the other way in doling out yellows like they were sweets at halloween. It was a bad performance while getting most of the key decisions right.

When did Curtis Jones turn into the box to box midfielder he is now?
Wataru is now such a key player for us. The stats tell us the same thing too. Really glad that Mac is back just as he’s about to leave for a month.
Still love Darwin whatever the naysayers say.
Quietly optimistic for the rest of the season. YNWA!

I don’t see any of that. Look at the one he took from the Konate ball over the top. He had to do a good amount to get that into a position where he could take a shot and he didnt think twice about it. His first touch was a positive one meant to set up the shot and if had the mindset you describe he’d have held the ball up instead of trying to turn that situation into an opportunity to get off a shot.

Guys Darwin is all we’ve got. We’re not gunna go out and buy Kane or Haaland or Lewandowski.
We should back him, and frankly there’s nothing wrong with him except maybe a bit of bad luck. Which is not his fault at all. His work rate and motivation are first class.
We need to give our guy all the confidence he needs.

that may well be true, but 1) how likely do we REALLY think this is, and 2) there’s a league to be won NOW!

He’s def a thick cunt. Salah almost always shoots to the left.

It’s more nuanced than that however I think.

If Tayls (fuck off!) gives the penno (as he did) and tells the VAR there was contact that he’s seen, and considers it was enough to impede Jota scoring, VAR should not be able to overturn it on “clear and obvious” - because the contact happened.

If he doesn’t give it, stating “saw no contact”, VAR should then ask him to review as there was contact - making it (potentially?) “clear and obvious”.

If he doesn’t give it, stating the contact was not sufficient for Jota’s fall, then again, its not “clear and obvious” (as he’s seen the contact and thinks Jota flopped easy, so VAR shouldn’t be doing anything.

It essentially comes down to what the ref thinks he saw and states upon his decision.

Hugely important win in difficult conditions. We totally dominated Newcastle, this match reminded me the early Klop days when the only option was attack. Later the manager and the players improved the overall control of the matches, but last night our players showed remarkable levels of stamina. Red wave after red wave, and at the end of the game Newcatsle looked much more knackered, after 4-2 they barely tried to attack. They were absolutely drained.

Gomez, VvD and Konate were really solid defensively, Ibou is slowly improving, he just needs to stay fit, the more match rhythm he gets, the better he will be. Gomez was so solid, Gordon could do nothing against him for 45 minutes, so Howe put him on the left side and he created their first goal, after TAA and Dom failed to stop and track him. Joe is a very interesting player - humble, loyal to the club, always ready to help his teammates, never heard him asking to leave the club, versatile, only 26 years old, but practically a veteran who is almost 10 years part of the first team.

Impressed with our starting midfielders. Endo is getting better and better, needed time, but he looks not only a leader, but also a player with high IQ. We will miss him, while being in Qatar.

Szoboszlai looked tired, but was still the creative force for our first penalty. Hopefully he won’t miss more than 2 weeks of football and looks like he needs a rest, Dom is one of the players that played most football this season.

Jones - the best midfielder on the pitch and a contender for MoM. Yesterday he looked like the finished article, pressin machine, using the right spaces, dropping deep to help Endo, but still being in dangerous offensive postions, scoring the hugely important 2nd goal, just hope he can continue in this track, he can be a very important player for LFC not only for this season, but for the next 10 years.

Salah - world class. Missed the penalty, but that did not stop him. Scored the first goal, fantastic pass to Jota for our second, beautiful ball for Gakpo for our third and scored the decisive 4th goal. 14 PL goals and 8 assists for Mo.

Diaz, Gakpo, Nunez and Jota have 16 PL goals and 9 assists combined between of them. Well, it will be a difficult task our 4 attackin players to stand up in Salah’s absence.

Nunez is missing too many chances, especially for a player with 80 mln. pounds price. Another vital assist /6th in the PL/, but had at least 4 good chances to score a goal - in the first half dominating the Newcastle defender and when he won the ball 1vs.1 with Dubravka shot straight at the goalie. In the second half - he had 2 fantastic opportunities after we scored our first goal. Great cross and he shot right at Dubravka from 5-6 metres, a minute later was played once again against Dubravka and again shot at the goalie’s range, seconds later Isak showed him how to score a goal from a similar situation. Then Endo put a perfect cross,.header and another miss…

Jota and Gakpo did much more for 25 minutes. Diogo with fantastic assist and later won us the penalty. Gakpo with a simple tap in /lucky, but knowing Darwin he would shoot with hist first touch right at the bar or Dubravka…/.

Nunez needs to improve his finishing and be calmer in front of goal, now we need his best version, because Salah won’t be here to save his coleagues blushes in attack.

Glad to see Luiz Diaz playing a really good game. He totally tormented Livramento and Tino is a very good player. Lucho scored a very good goal /sadly offside, but once again fantastic ball by Jones and still Nunez’s poor ball control let him down and the Newcastle defender touched the ball at Diaz’s path/, won us the 1st penalty and I was surprised to see him substituted.

And finally several words about Gravenberch, clearly Klopp likes him and it is easy to see his vast potential, but once again was not impressed with him. Absolutely bottled it and did not track Botman, leaving him absolutely free to score their second goal, Klopp looked mad. His overall display was not very convincing, similar to Manure’s match. Still a yound player, who is here for only 4 months and I am hopeful he will improve, but needs to show much more hunger and desire. That is maybe why I expected to see Elliott, but probably Ryan is better at the training ground, who knows…

Overall I think the club is overperforming. Losing it’s backbone in less than 18 months - Hendo, Mane, Firmino, Fabinho, Milner and Thiago injured for more than 9 months. Totally new midfield, the best left back in the league is out for around 4 months and his deputy will be out for months too. Matip out till the end of the season. Other teams spending 105 and 115 mln. pounds for defensive midfielders, while Klpp spent 16 mln. pounds for a player from Stuttgart, the same team that needed a playoff against HSV /3rd in 2 Bundesliga/ to stay in Germany’s elite football.

And this club has lost only 1 match this PL season and we know very well in what circumstances. We will need luck and probably at least one new signing /defender is the most pressing issue/, but Klopp is doing a very, very good job for our club once again.

A post worthy of a bookmark! Cheers! :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m backing Nunez to score while Mo is away with the attack more focused on him. or just piss defenders off, which works too.

We missed a penalty and scored 4… yet it seems the biggest worry of the game is about our ability to finish chances.

We had over thirty shots (the exact number varies, depending upon the source) but scored only four times. At best, that’s a conversion rate of 13.33%.

Of course the finishing is a concern.

What’s an acceptable rate, as a % of shots on target, out of interest?

25%-ish?

When teams start to sit deep and our players decide to shoot from outside the box just to get blocked by an opponent - that’s how you reach 34 ‘shots’.

15 shots ‘on target’ - and even those include some stuff you’d never call a shot - like misplaced crosses or other.

He has to try to reach Harry Kane level where he scores a goal every time his team mate does
