Post match: Liverpool v Newcastle (EPL 31/8/22 8pm)

If Fab doesn’t press Longstaff, the space isn’t there for the ball to Isak (but the shooting opportunity opens up for Longstaff). Whether that was a brain fart on his part, or someone shouted for him to press, or whether it was by tactical instruction, it resulted in the worst outcome at that moment. The coaches will be coaching the shit out of that moment this week, no doubt.

If he’s not being released by a recovered CB and then directed to step up tot he ball, he has a calculation to make to figure out which player is the most dangerous and what he is capable of doing to affect that. It’s a ton to process and so players get it wrong all the time. That’s football.

With Fab though I dont think he so much made the wrong calculation as he acted without even considering the calculation. It’s pretty obvious that Issak is the most dangerous player there and Longstaff has a lot to do before closing him down becomes the priority. I think he just focused on the ball and forgot everything else that was around him…as is the wont of a midfielder filling in at CB

Yeah, it’s funny and they got a bit of egg on their face. But to me it is a small consolation because their meme is basically correct. While we won this game, we played badly, struggled mightily to create against them. We have still legions of players injured and we are in a very bad place. I had expected much more after the 9-0, but this was back to the previous games.
I see this game more as a warning that we are still in the deep shit compared to where we need to be.
Imo, there is very little positive to take from this game all in all.

I thought we scored in the 97th?

No arguments at all there. Very much in agreement

Comments from Trippier earlier today said the time wasting ,feigning injury, kicking the ball away was part of their game plan…
but weirdly said time wasting needs to be looked at…yeah matey boy…we know…

But they’re not sure when it occurred, before or after the goal, or wether the goal incited the throwing…whichever, there is footage of 2 persons throwing water bottles at our team coaching area…they’ll try n deny it…
:lying_face::lying_face::lying_face:

Using what argument?

“I was trying to throw the water bottle to one of our players when the naughty LFC coaches deliberately try to block our hydration attempt” ?

Just want to comment on the time wasting and time keeping.

At some point I can see this going the way of VAR too. By that, I mean a growing desire to get it more right, more exact, and so it will probably be taken away from the referee’s for someone else, off the pitch, to keep time.

It is possible that the game might evolve into a format we see in American sports, with the clock counting down to zero.

Part of me doesn’t want that outcome, as I like the beautiful game as it is, warts and all. But with more and more teams gaming the system and wasting time, it is going to come back in their face with better timekeeping, and probably by someone placed in authority away from the pitch, who is not refereeing the actual game itself.

That didn’t cost any more time because while he was coming off we decided to put Fabio on who wasn’t ready.

Yes, this would be key. They can stop the clock the minute the play stops, the ref doesn’t have to be constantly looking at his watch and can just get a signal as to when to finish the match.

Yep that sounds about right after the explanation of the game plan by Trippier and Howe, which seem to conflict each other…(look chaps if your gonna fib get ya stories right)

We are winning this.

I don’t really understand why that would be such a challenge for a referee. Basketball refs manage it without difficulty.

That sounds appealing, but I actually think it has the potential to make things worse.

The point of time wasting isn’t really about time, it’s about disrupting rhythm. There was an incident last night, where we were on a real wave of pressure, and (I think it was) Joelinton goes down and kills it for a minute or two. And all the momentum is lost.

You could have situations where teams go down ‘injured’ and make it really last to take the energy out of a game. And they’ll get no pressure to get on with it, because they clock has stopped so what’s the problem?

For me, the answer to this is just enforce the fucking rules that exist. Yellow cards for time wasting, and the goalkeeper gets no more that 6 seconds with the ball in their hands.
