Salah, Van Dijk, Elliott, Gapko and Endo in no particular order. Not that I think that we would have gone through, as the atmosphere that I got from the extra time and penalties from the TV feed was one of resignment both on the pitch and in the stands. Which is both annoying and alarming. Still, we could have made the penalties a lot more interesting.
Nunez and Jones’ penalties were pathetic; you could tell from a mile away that neither believed that he’d score.
What a disappointing result
We weren’t great in last week’s tie. I thought last night’s match was pretty even, with two exceptional teams giving their all. Our lads did everything they could, but when it comes to penalties, it is luck and the footballing gods who decide both teams fate.
Congratulations to PSG, i wouldn’t be surprised if they get to the final
It just wasn’t our night. I think Arne will have learnt alot during his first Champions League tenure. He will make the team better for next season. I am so proud of our boys, they did their very best. The silver lining is that we are 15 points clear in the league, that is something to be positive about. We also have a cup final.
We don’t need an overhaul of the team, we are fine thank you. Arne will make our team even more stronger, resilient and harder to beat next season.
That’s a good shout. It was a game of attrition and it did feel like our league schedule caught up with us. Physically and mentally.
As I said before, a proper seeding like previous CL iterations we grind through this tie with no penalties. We got caught in a low ebb of energy and the combination of Gakpo missing and both Jota and (especially) Nunez misfiring has really left us short.
It’s odd that people keep talking about Núñez misfiring when his most recent couple of games have been his most productive in pretty much the entire season thus far.
He has the raw quality and physical skills. They come to the fore in fits and starts as in the Brentford match, his cameo in Paris, and against Southampton. But by and large he is not a bankable forward asset. He’s even lost that Captain Chaos quality.
We (rightly) expect big things from him because he has ability in spades! He can be a top class forward player. Even a traditional no 9. But he is very unreliable.
I mean last night’s game was frustrating to lose, but I don’t feel it was attributable to any individual. It’s arguable that Arne could have done better with the substitutions, but with what we had out there, we were unlucky, especially with the injury to Alexander-Arnold. It’s quite hard to argue that losing a world-class player like that who was beginning to dominate the game at that point doesn’t significantly hurt our chances, especially not when his replacement was playing out of his usual position to begin with.
He had that for the first few minutes he came on, but then as a team, we seemed to withdraw into our shells.
I feel as though with him it’s a mental state issue. Give him Salah’s mentality and resilience, especially emotionally, he’d be a much different player.
Unironically so, for me. Not instantaneously, but he would immediately be much better. At least, he would be relentless, especially since he still has that energy, speed, and stamina that Salah may well be losing.
Not Captain Chaos for sure, but definitely very problematic for the opponents to deal with, which might not result in direct goal contributions for him, but increased space to bring the other players into the game. As it is right now, it’s very visible when his head goes down. I do think though that the away game in Paris and the Southampton game did show that he’s improving in this regard, able to pull himself together better when he’s not done particularly well earlier.
That said, given what happened earlier in the season when I was talking about him, I think it’s safer for me to say he’s shite and we should be paying other clubs to take him off our hands.
I maintain that a fit Gakpo and a fit Bradley could have made a real difference. Bradley’s runs open up a lot of attacking channels. And Gakpo has been our second scorer all season
I’m disappointed that we didn’t manage to qualify to the next round. 2 great legs where both teams gave it all. I feel PSG had the edge as. There midfield was slightly better than ours during the 2 matches.
Personally I would like to see them go on and win it. This would show what a good team knocked us out. They are a team that have improved over the season whilst we were just coming out of a little slip.
I thought Slots obstinate character cost us a bit. Gravenberch looked ‘dead’ well before he came off and was struggling. Whist Macca was playing really well.
Generally we were trying to force it rather than control. This meant we didn’t have enough players available in midfield to pass to.
