Post Match: Liverpool v Real Madrid (UCL 21/07/23 8pm)

Re the £200m hot potato… Jurgen would be absolutely right to show caution if he was handed this money to bring new players in… We don’t have to look very far to see what an absolute waste of money looks like in all its glory - Naby Keita
No-one in their right mind can ever look at this guy’s time at the club, the beginning, the middle and now the end, and say we got value for money out of him… For whatever those reasons have been, if you look at the cold hard facts… buying a single player for a lot of money
takes you, your reputation, and the clubs war chest into really risky territory. Keita has been a shit signing from day one.
To make matters worse, the club has made him a rich young man, and how does he pay Jurgen back for that, instead of re-signing and giving us a chance to recuperate some of his outlay, he is off on a freebie first chance he gets.
Getting huge funds to spend like that, is not a chopping block I would like to put my head on

Pretty much, if you know you can’t defend set plays properly like we know we can’t….then dont give away the stupid fouls near our box to begin with, although I get thats easier said than done.

Thebreal question is why no one’s zone was the edge of the 6 yard box. I think one of the players messed up their positioning, we just don’t know who.

We haven’t been able to defend set pieces all season.

It’s poor organisation/coaching.

Not specific to the Madrid 3rd goal but I think one of our problems from set pieces is we have only van Dijk and Konate who can consistently win headers. Firmino has always beena good defender of set pieces too but he’s usually marking the 4th or 5th most threatening zone. This season the unavailability of van Dijk and Konate at times has meant we’ve had, at best, one good aerial defender.

I put this blame once again on midfield. Primarily Fabinho, who for a tall guy is remarkably bad in the air, but also whoever else plays the CM roles - we just don’t have anyone helping that side of our game.

We certainly needntonadd more durability, aggression and height in the summer.

My money would be on the former, on the pitch.
No-one taking control of situations and barking instructions on defensive roles.

Add Thiago, much better in the air than Fabinho and Hendo.
He covers areas well during set pieces

Regarding marking zonal, makes me laugh when derrogatory comments are made about it as if no one ever scored a goal against man marking.

It can’t be bad coaching cos we’ve been fine in previous seasons, unless our coaching has fell off a cliff.

I think the team is knackered from 5 seasons of having to be perfect to win anything.

I agree we need to add some steel and power to the team though.

Finally about the 200 million quid. It wasn’t a debate but a simple hypothetical question. Ifitkar said 200 million quid wouldn’t have made a difference. I asked him are you really saying that:
200 million quid in Klopp’s hands wouldn’t improve the team this season?
I don’t know how anyone can argue that the answer isn’t a simple yes.

I am not advocating us being an oil club or us spending money hand over fist.

Did I

This sums it all up.
Perfect all the time, and even as near perfect as they were its sometimes not good enough.

Not good enough when fucking cheats are allowed to prosper.
The players and manager are destroyed by not getting entitlement.

Yep, you did.

I think you have confused me with someone else. I tend to avoid talking about specific figures.

Regarding zonal, marking we aren’t fully zonal as we have blockers/markers that effect there supposedly better players from getting in dangerous positions.

From my perspective we got the zonal marking wrong as we should have a player marking space to prevent that low flat corss as it was too easy to play that ball.

There should have been someone covering it as we do on corners. I feel we got lost in what to do as it was a freekick rather than a corner.

Nope

Would you quote that post?

Yep.

It was Mascot.

Then I asked you specifically and you fudged the answer like Semmy did.

The conversation is in this thread.

I was saying Klopp would have to want to spend that money rather than back the lads he has, which he hasn’t always wanted to do.

Correct. But Ifitkar said 200 million wouldn’t make a difference.
