Well, I understand that many think itās an embarrasment, fair enough. I donāt because I think our season is horrid and that we are miles from the form we need to be in to compete in KOs in the Champions League. I predicted a narrow loss, it was worse, but with this seasonās mentality, it is not a big surprise that the snowball keeps rolling when we hit the wall. I mean that.
I think many here on this forum had far to high expectation. Many think that just because itās Liverpool, Anfield and itās Europe, we will somehow become another team. That only works now and then (that an average inferior team can step up and somehow punch the better opponent) and while Anfield is a big help, itās not magic.
Had this been 2 seasons ago I would be like many of you, truly embarrased. But itās not, it is this season and we havenāt been a top team this season at all. We have had a very few very good games, like against City etc. , but mostly we have been a very average team. Being an everage upper midtable team, you canāt expect to win the lottery and knock out the better teams often, as that only happens on a super day and when the other team isnāt playing their best. Real Madrid was truly up for it and then we are not a good enough team anymore. This is why I am not embarrased, given the context of us not being a Top 4 team, even struggling to get top 6.
Even so the first 20 min was the best we have played this season, and maybe for over a year. I canāt remember us pressing and dominating such a good opponent for ages, so Iāll take that (because I had fun watching us in the first half) and treasure that. The collapse came after, it was sad, but it is also a testament to where we are as a club.
We need a rebuild, it will take years, but I am confident that we will be a bit better next year even though we definately wonāt be challenging for the title unless many of our players have a miraculous recovery. But perhaps next season we will get top 4 and be in better form and therefore get a deep run (without such heavy losses) in the UCL. I hope so. I also hope we win a domestic cup next year, as you donāt have to be a world beater to win a domestic cup.
If they managed to score 5 at Anfield how many will they score in return leg? Or do we even bother putting out our best players? I know what Rodgers would do.
This isnāt fair. Yes, Iām being a bit facetious with the bit RedBJ snipped, but their is a broader point.
Giving Klopp money is one thing. Persuading him to spend it is another completely.
You might be the kind of person who cannot possible conceive of a manager having money to spend and not spending it. We know Klopp is cut from a different cloth to someone like Harry Redknapp. There was money there to sign Tchoumeni. No-one is telling me Klopp was not allowed to spend it, or some of it, on an alternative.
A lot of what we complain about as lack of funding, or FSG being tight, are actually choices.
I can wade in on the Ā£200m debate. The answer is, it depends.
How much have Chelsea spent recently? How are they doing?
Conversely ask the same of Arsenal.
You can spend your money well and improve things, or itās probably far easier to spend it really badly and achieve nothing other than a massive wage bill.
Personally before we hop on the buying bandwagon Iād really like to see a deep dive into why weāve deteriorated as we have. Why has VvD become so passive, why has Salahs ability to control a football fallen off a cliff, why does Fabinho look like heās running in 3 feet of mud and constantly caught out of position, and so on.
Pretty sure the club will have answers and weāll never get to see it but I still find it crazy how bad things have become.
Considering how we have been, this was coming. I donāt think itās anyoneās particular fault. Itās just a disjointed season combined with a horrendous injury list, culminating in a loss of confidence. 10% down at this level is huge. Chin up lads it will turn around.
I donāt think thatās 100% fair. I get the impression that the club has a very prescribed and programmed approach transfers. That would also be a very āAmericanā approach having worked for a US based firm in the past.
So to me the problems have highlighted problems in a system that isnāt flexible enough to cope with mass injuries or whatever else we want to call our current issues.
On the Ā£200 million topic, if he had it available and chose not to spend it, then he had a fucking good reason.
And I for one will accept his fucking good reason over the opinions and arguments of a group of clueless internet forum users.
I donāt mean clueless in an insulting fashion, just that compared to Klopps managerial and coaching ability, and the knowledge he has within the club, we are all clueless.
And even aside from that, we donāt know what other restrictions were in place. We can only sign players who are available, suitable and willing to sign for us. Real world football is a different beast to playing FIFA on the Playstation.
Yeah, I thought it was a really well worked goal, perfectly designed to expose the main weakness in the zonal marking system which is reaction time and passing responsibility across zones.
They knew how we would set up and countered it perfectly.
That said Iām sure Klopp and co. are pissed about how we performed on it.
But the goal isnāt on Trent if weāre zonal marking the set playā¦.heās fixated to defending that vicinity at the far stick, becomes irrelevant that Eder is standing closest to Trent before the kick is taken.
