That tackle pumped up the fans as well. Stadium seemed rocking after that. We always need one such moment and then Anfield becomes its scary self for the opponents. Arteta’s was another one I remember.
But that’s not in our control is it? He wants first team regular football. And rightly so with his ability. Unless Ali is looking to leave, that means for his sake he needs to find a new home.
When Courtois saved Bradley’s chance on about 55mins, I thought I’ve seen this before, they’re going to keep us out and score on the counter aren’t they? But then… new era, new story. My stream died just before Mbappe took his pen so I had an extra long period of anxiety for that one as well.
Feels like we lifted a curse against these. Still, Courtois had an excellent game again, the cunt. If it weren’t for him, it easily could have been double the margin.
It was a great European night after a while, the first of many under Slot. And what a performance; it could rival any of our best. It’s a rare thing when the entire midfield has a legitimate claim as the MotM. As does Bradley, as does Konate, as does Kelleher. The only concerns are the two injuries and Robertson giving up another penalty rather easily. Salah didn’t look fresh either but he’ll be good to go on Sunday.
As I’m sure the whole team. We’ve got a score to settle.
The performance, the atmosphere, all in front of legends of the game and the footballing world. Absolutely loved it. Superb seeing how we ramped up the intensity one moment, and then probe around with purpose until we work an opening.
The Leverkusen game and this one really feel big. Leverkusen because of Alonso, arguably the brightest young coach in Europe, a former star player of ours, opting to stay at Leverkusen, and he witnessed the power of Anfield from the sidelines as a manager, while our football blew his side away. He even spoke about the development of the club from when he was last here, the stadium expansion, the training ground development.
Then we have Real Madrid. European champions. Coached by the most successful coach of the competition, with one of the best attackers on the planet, the best young English talent who we were looking at a few seasons ago. This side has had our number in the last decade on multiple occasions, even in home games under Klopp, so much so that Slot called them a “pain in the ass”. Real Madrid legends were in attendance. Sporting royalty i.e. Nadal were in attendance. The world was watching. Anfield stepped up to the plate again. The players blew Real away. It was just so satisfying.
Add into the mix that Real want our star right-back on a free, who had to settle to watching us demolish them from subs bench, while our stand-in young right back put in a MOTM performance.
City at home, Newcastle away, and Everton away next. Huge games, but hopefully, we can continue making big statement wins!
’ It was just so satisfying.’ - That was it more than anything for me. For all the reasons you have given , and I might add (to coin a phrase) ; it just meant more. You could see it in the performance level of our players , in Bradley’s tackle on Mbappé , in McAllister’s reaction to the opener , to the all standing Kop (more of that please !) and to the unbelievable atmosphere in the ground. It was a night to rank amongst the greats.
