I’d have bet money that Slot would have pulled Nunez after that stupid yellow, and yet not only he kept him on, but Nunez proved pivotal to turning things around. Shows how much we know.
Huge win, 16 points ahead and a nice set-up for the showdown with PSG. It would have been nice if Van Dijk had avoided that brainfart with their goal, but no one is perfect.
Strange kind of game with no one standing out. Evan after we gave them a goal start we never looked in trouble. As previously mentioned the subs at half time was the difference. Another welcome three points.
First half was dismal as fuck. We were keeping Soton and whittling their energy away until VVD and Alisson got a communication error. Nunez was so frustrated that he lost his head with a wild trip and had to have Salah to calm him down. Diaz was running into dead ends too.
The second half was wow. I have no idea what went down in that dressing room but it had to be some inspiring speech that had Nunez sit down and think hard. Nunez transformed from a clueless klutz to his Benfica version in the second half.
The subs were magnificent.
Starting from Robbo. Robbo immediately showed why he is still the LB of this club for now by supporting Diaz more offensively.
Macca for Jones is also an inspired change. Jones is a decent player but Macca is just world class in his positioning and decision making. Helped out Gravenberch more effectively compared to Jones.
Elliott for Szoboszlai was not bad who helped to keep the width.
Liverpool forward Harvey Elliott, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "In my eyes, it**'s just my job to come on and influence the game where I can.**
"The last two games have been very tough - it is not about me, it’s about the whole team.
"It was an intense game. Especially with the travel, we only had one day to prepare for this game and hats off to Southampton - they made it tough throughout the whole game.
"We need to keep winning games - it’s as simple as that.
“It’s about taking it game-by-game and making sure we apply ourselves in the best possible way.”
With those goals Mo passed Hodgson to go into third place all time for Liverpool, and moved level with Aguero for prem goals now only 3 behind Cole. He’s going to surely end this season above him 4th place and will be only 1 good season away from passing Rooney and Kane
That first half was what I feared: tired players switched off. I suspect that those half time subs were planned, but they came out but the attitude made the difference.
I suppose Mo has to be MotM for his record breaking and perseverance. Nunez proved me wrong, and Mac was a rod of steel in the second half.
