At times, we were a bit too open at the back and Kelleher didn’t cover himself in glory with that pass, or with his reaction for their goal.
That’s the only negative from Klopp fielding a team with 8 changes that had a 19 year old starting at left back for the first ever time, who was himself replaced by an 18 year old.
If this performance doesn’t speak to our strength in numbers, nothing does. This is one of the deepest and talented squads we’ve had in years. The summer rebuilt hasn’t just gone better than it was thought at the time; it has exceeded expectations.
I think over summer I said I wouldn’t sell Kelleher until I was sure Alisson was committed for the long term, and a load of people jumped on me saying ‘you can’t sell Ali’ which obviously wasn’t what I was saying at all.
He was shaky tonight, but he is just back of an injury I think. No blame for the goal though. As a goalkeeper in that situation, the odds always favour the attacker - unless you’re Alisson Becker.
I also felt Kelleher should have done more for the goal. Didn’t close the space and got his angles wrong. Probably just a little rusty if he’s returning from injury as he’s normally far more assured than tonight.
Midfield looked really good, Endo’s best performance by far. Difficult to say if he’s ready for more league action though, hopefully he can bring that level of performance into league games.
Wow, crazy that people think that. I guess anything is possible in the world of the armchair pundit.
Sadly, mistakes made by keepers often carry the greatest consequences. They have to be perfect 100% of time. That’s not possible
He is a brilliant back up imo. I’d see him as a natural successor to Alisson when that time sadly comes, but I also understand his perfectly valid ambitions for regular first team football as well. He’s probably better than the majority of the current crop of PL keepers for example.
Didn’t see the game live (There’s now way I’m forking out on another subscription to watch EL group games.) , but I’ve just seen the highlights and have to say that looked like a thoroughly enjoyable romp.
The two misses were my favourite bits ; Darwin’s when he’s done all the hard stuff and has an open goal , and the Toulouse lad who somehow found Trent’s thigh in the whole goal.
Tbh I could name 5-10 worse goalkeepers than Kelleher who have been played for ourselves or United in my lifetime, many as first choice. Including their current £45m man.
This team is good enough to win the league for me, we do probably need a 6, but still if we keep growing this season I can’t see many teams being able to handle us.
