They are evidently not dominating and I don’t think they will. They will probably battle Arsenal now for the title especially if Arsenal shit the bed a bit after Sunderland but that era of 99pts is gone
There was a point made 2 weeks back that if he didn’t show some improvement against Madrid or Villa or Man City then he should go. We since showed a decent performance against Villa and an excellent performance against Madrid. I still feel it’s mostly due to playing the same side 3 games in a row, whatever people say about time between games.
I think winning 2 from 3 and especially 3 teams in form I think was decent stuff. If he stinks the next 5 out then you have to consider whether he’s turning it around.
If he does take a break I hope he heads back home to Netherlands it might help him.
We won the Prem last season. For the second time in 35 years. At Slot’s first attempt. Once it was wrapped up we took our foot off the pedal and lost some at the end. Here is my point:
Those losses should not be folded into this season. When a new season starts it’s a fresh slate with a fresh set of circumstances.
Now, onto this season. Yes, I completely agree that the amount of losses is a concern, as is the unclear pattern of play, as is the lack of full integration for our newbies, for various reasons, not all in the control of Slot.
Conclusion, at least for me:
Slot has more than earned the right to sort this out and build his own side. The midfield was refreshed at the end of Klopp’s time. Slot just added strikers and fullbacks, and there’s a bit more to do as central defence needs looking at, in addition to perhaps a deep midfielder and a Mo Salah replacement.
Slot has earned the right to build his own side. Obviously that is not a complete blank check, as if the arse falls out the whole thing and we become relegation stragglers he will face the chop. But we are miles away from that.
Let’s see what happens. I’m backing Slot to sort this out and improve our fortunes. The title is probably gone, as Arsenal appear most consistent based on their solid defence, while we are in flux. I think we will still finish in the CL spots and if we integrate the newbies better and find some form and balance, anything is possible in the CL.
A coach is responsible for his team’s reaction, effort and discipline. When there’s a complete lack of fight a nous. When a player, Bradley in this instance, is being dominated and needs help however doesn’t get that help, whilst another player, Gravenberch in this instance, is standing in space doing nothing. That’s a big problem of team ethic and leadership. Yet if he could he’d drop Bradley and keep going with Gravenberch however well either is performing.
My comments are not about the score as I pointed out before it’s about the performance. I have never seen Liverpool with such a lack of cohesion and will. Yes other managers get it wrong however it’s one offs, against teams that are on paper better or some other circumstance. They still look like they are fighting for something. It’s certainly not a string of matches where we rinse and repeat, which under Slot has been from last February. Waiting for the last 10-15 minutes to have our best defender go up and loiter Infront of the opposition goal.
The thing is I’m completely confused. I haven’t got a clue what Slot is trying to do. Under Hodgson, Rodgers and Klopp we knew what they wanted and how they would go about it. Whoever the players there was fight and entertainment. It could be discussed. Here we’re just shooting in the dark from my point of view.
This is a hell of a long post. So will leave it there for now. However I will just add I’m not at the point of calling for Slot’s head, even if I am worried if this decision is left too long it could be even more catastrophic.
So it’s your opinion that the way Chelsea burn through managers, and therefore players, is the right way to run a football club, and we should be looking to do that?
I am fully supportive of Slot and I believe he should, rightly, get more time to sort out the issues and build his team. That’s not an unlimited amount of time, mind.
Winning the Prem has earned him the benefit of the doubt for me, and I can be patient while a new thing emerges.
My hunch is AFCON will be a bit of a watershed for us, and Slot will work something out to get Wirtz, Ekitike and Isak on the pitch, sans Salah, and if that starts to click we won’t look back.
The huge investment in the team (and I think there is more on the way) is to set us up for the next five years, not he the next five games.
If this ends up being the dreaded transition season, then so be it - but I expect to see the shape of the next great Liverpool side starting to emerge by the end of this season.
Sticking with a top manager long term is the best strategy. Sticking with an underperforming one out of loyalty is not the next best thing, and Chelsea actually had a fair bit of success when swapping managers every 5 minutes.
Different situations require different approaches.
Looking back on the game yesterday although we were pretty awful we also had no luck at all. Their first goal from Haaland wasn’t intentional. By that I think the ball hit his forehead after a slight touch from Konate. The ball then landed into the very top corner of the goal giving Marma no chance of saving it. The second goal was a deflected shot again giving Marma no chance. Their third was a worldy just like Mo USED to score for us. Apart from those three I don’t think that Marma had that much to do. I’m not making any excuses for us following another poor display in atrocious playing conditions but every team gets a bit of luck along the way but we haven’t had much in our last few league matches as last season I thought we had plenty. I don’t usually criticise referees but the guy we had yesterday was worse than the weather.
They also hired Frank Lampard as manager. He was the fourth manager in the three and a half years since they sack Mourinho so let’s not be hasty in holding them up as bastions of good decision making.
