Technology can always be made more precise so that the measurement error gets ever smaller. The issue is that isnt always a good thing. One of the main criticisms of VAR’s offsides has been calling people offside that were so close that fans were unable to see why…to it punishing cases that were too close for our eyes to see. Even if it were precise enough to make such tight decisions, it felt wrong to the fans and was commonly believed to not be in the spirit of the rule. They’ve now added more leeway in so it feels fairer, more in line with what the rule was intended to prevent, but added a tech backstop to prevent the bollock dropping ones like the disallowed Sterling goal against city in 13-14 that ultimately cost us the league.
And I’ve told you that I don’t think your question is valid and explained why I think that. What I felt in the moment, massively colored by what I hoped to be true, has no bearing on objective reality.
Ultimately it’s pointless. I don’t see where our 2nd goal was coming from. And if that was given offside they’d probably score another one given the way we were playing
I’m pretty sure that the majority if fans are positioned (within the stadium) such that they are never going to be in a position to have a clear judgement until they see the replay on a screen. This fudge of having an “error margin” introduces the very murkiness that the tech is supposed to solve. I don’t know the right solution here but a mix of VAR and giving more power (in terms of personnel and in making decisions) back to the officials on the pitch may be a way forward.
On another note, I’d be curious to find out if the margin for error is the same at all grounds.
I guess you cannot please everyone. But yes, the VAR is the same at every ground.
@Limiescouse
Fine.
I think Rashford was offside, objectively.
I think its a valid analysis within the measurement tolerance. He is ahead of the defender in the pictures shown, ergo offside.
But faith in the VAR machinery seems ill placed now, as clunky definitions of what is correct and incorrect allow for innacurate decisions.
We, stupidly in hindsight placed faith in VAR to resolve issues on the pitch.
It has only added to the confusion.
Can we stop bickering about VAR and start bickering about the shambles that is our team, tactics, personnel and lack of recruitment!
Probably shouldn’t mention my fitness training tips to Naby then…
That only works if you can get off the treatment table/MRI scanner/X-ray scanner
Not Sure that I can, enough people already doing that.
Tbf the sky is currently falling on every thread here
Do you really expect anyone to believe that when Hendo’s late winner against Everton a couple of seasons ago was disallowed by VAR for Mane’s being offside, by a margin imperceptible to the naked eye, you were fine with it? That you accepted that sometimes these just go against you and if this is how the VAR process has been written then you have to follow it and accept the results for what they are?
Yeah, I thought we could get away with it too, but right now, the situation looks pretty dismal to be fair.
Not sure what can be done about it though. Panic buying right at the end of the window isn’t our way with Klopp, and I’d be surprised if something happens on the transfer front before the window closes. Klopp has said it: no-one is available right now, it’s very clear.
Hopefully there are one or two young players in the squad who will be able to jump in a bit later if things stay like that, similar to Phillips and Williams in 20-21.
For once, just once…
Please understand that some times fans can be myopic and only see things the way way they want them for their club. Its allowed.
And for once, accept that you dont have to be the voice of reason concerning VAR on here all the time. You explain the purpose and limits of VAR over and over.
For clarity, Hendo was onside vs Everton.
Rashford was offside last night.
Game changing decisions that were incorrect VAR calls. And I repeat, Rashford was offside.
Overall Liverpool were admittedly poor, but an incorrect decision has cost us. Again.
You stated that arguing with me was unpleasant a few weeks ago, and I accept that my opposing views are at times difficult, or at least posed in a difficult manner. I get that.
But arguing with you at times is frustrating because you believe that every VAR call is couched in whatever version of the rules is in vogue at the time.
They get it wrong on occasions
Yeah… But Im hoping youngsters like Carvalho Jones and Elliot really step up along with adding Jude … Hendo Fabinho and Thiago still being here… And maybe another cheaper but solid addition to the mix… But the development of the young lads are key.
That’s going a little far mate, DS made Keita look like a granite boulder.
Nunez and Diaz (while looking good) still really have to prove themselves as a major threat like Mane was… We are not going to win much if Salah doesnt produce. And with Jota out… Not much space for Salah… Other teams will still focus on stopping Salah amd take their chances until Nunez etc prove their worth.
I can’t read the Bournemouth thread yet…
