Post match: Man Utd v Liverpool (EPL 22/8/22 8pm)

Goals getting given that look very much offside was not an outcome I ever wanted.

At this point I’d prefer mistakes in the pitch as opposed to both mistakes on the pitch and in front of the screen.

Referees are behaving differently now that VAR is there, they think if they don’t get it VAR will, but many times it doesn’t.

So in some ways it’s actually worse

Sigh!

Didn’t want to get into the VAR thing as the team is our main issue but here goes.

The reason people wanted the “leeway” is because armpits, elbows, half a foot…things that you wouldn’t be able to tell by the naked eye, were being given offside.

But when the leeway means a clearly visible offside is not given then there is something wrong.

If Rashford’s goal was given then so should have Jesus’ goal against Bournemouth should also have been given. In fact it was a tighter call than the second Manc goal.

So the application has been plain wrong.

Looks like the campaign of the referees to completely undermine VAR is working…

Thats bollox frankly.
VAR was supposed to end controversy about these decisions and it has just caused more. Three seasons ago Rashford would be incorrectly called onside, and he was last night. So no, we are not getting the outcomes we want.

What you blithely describe as moaning is actually warranted frustration at the ineptidue of officials on VAR, the inability of the equipment to do the job it was supposed to do and the constant changing of criteria surrounding decisions.

If Land Rover produced a braking system as inadequate as VAR is for the intended purpose then they would be out of business…

But I guess this ‘won’t land’ to use your expression, because you have an enduring belief that VAR is a worthwhile project.

Had to gather my thoughts for a day, lol. One of the worst displays under JK I’ve seen. We’re not in crisis mode but realistically I think this year might be a slog. Sure, it’s a 38-game season, and Cheaty/etc. will drop points, but barring a miracle we’re not winning the League and I think will do well to finish 2nd.

Monday: Of course it feels like everything has gone against us since early May, and I think there’s something to that, but that performance was absolutely atrocious. I’m not OK with losing and even less OK with it being to the Mancs, but that performance was abysmal — tactically and technically, but even worse in terms of work rate.

To be clear: Losing Mane — big impact. Thiago and Naby (and Matip) being made of crisps — also impactful. Injuries writ large, problematic. Nunez being an idiot, also impactful.

But some of the football we played was shocking. Salah and Diaz were WAY too wide, particularly when Bobby drops so deep and CBs are calling his bluff and not following him. Midfield was way too open, even considering injuries. Virgil hasn’t been right for a while and was really poor, and Trent has been shocking defensively for months — I have defended him (no pun intended) in the belief that people were exaggerating his defensive issues but he’s been really bad and that continued last night. Robbo has also been way off (Gomez brought in from the cold so he gets a pass). The only one of the back five to come out with any credibility was Ali.

What also boggles the mind is that defensively they were there to be had. Varane is a more technically adept version of Skrtel in that he does OK with a partner but is not cut to lead a back four. Martinez is too short by most CB standards and we did fuck all to test them. In terms of ability, their lineup was dogshit and (even given our situation) there for the taking, but based on our performance we deserved f**k all from the game. It’s Liverpool-United, they hadn’t beaten us in four league seasons, we knew they would be up for it particularly being at home — think about the 5-0 and the impact that would have had — we played right into their hands by being lethargic. The work rate was one of the worst I’ve seen and I hope to never see it again.

Lastly, a bit of good news: Buck-toothed Bruno has still won 0 trophies at United.

I understand about the offside call both ways. Frustrating goal to get given tbh but Gomez should have been stepping up the minute he saw Rashford on his bike. He started, looked a bit lost, got his bearings wrong and by that time had played him just about enough onside to get the call given as onside.

If we’re slating Phillips for Zaha against Palace then we need to be asking Joe wtf as well.

I don’t it, was clear offside, this BS about a new rule is noting else for them to fuck with us even further.

100%
And to be clear the offside call, whilst having an effect is actually the least of our worries at the moment.
We defended poorly, offered luttle in attack and let United win all the battles.

SPOT on!

Yes, I suspect that too and wrote this earlier in the post-match thread. Klopp has a reputation of flogging his players almost to death during pre-season. Usually, the rewards are there as we have seen in the past years: our intensive way of playing football needs super-fit players. But this time around, he might have taken it too far given the special circumstances.

The long travel to Asia won’t have helped either in that regard. I really don’t know what, apart from some more $$$, incited the club to organise an Asia tour when everyone knew that this pre-season was going to be considerably shortened.

That would be a fair assumption.

But on the other hand, could Klopp have changed his pre-season approach knowing that it was going to be so disrupted (shortened timeframe, and also travel) that he may have opted for a less intense pre-season?

We all know Klopp is very asstute and picks up on little things, so I personally won’t be surprised to find out that Klopp made some changes to his approach of preseason factoring in the travel and early start of the season

The World Cup will use the semi-automated offside system, which uses its own cameras rather than relying on the broadcasters’.

If that goes well, then this is the last season for the manual choosing frame, lines, etc.

Tbf, I hadn’t factored in it could be used against us. That’s just objectively wrong.

How could you be so dumb … of course I can use against us, otherwise it would never been implicated :innocent:

Yep, objectively dumb, no tolerance for that one.

stayed away from forum and rather sadly, away from any kind of footie since that gut wrenching (for me personally), result last Monday. It hurts to lose a game, but I truly can’t stand losing to that shite. It hurts and that is unbearable. I cannot express how much I hate that team. I wish they would get relegated and stay in the doldrums of some local league that probably exist in that city.
BTW, haven’t gone thru’ any of what’s said on the forum, so apologies if this has already been said by a member
Hope the lads get their mojo back and start a truly classic unbeaten run from now

And whirl back in time to the point where most were clamouring for video replays.

I was having a difficult day on Monday, and was so invested in it improving with the match.
But it went beyond dissapointing…we all have memories of low points with Liverpool but I genuinely think that in a few years time Monday’s result will for me at least rank amongst the worst.
The Villa hammering was a freak of nature, the Stoke defeat was the product of circumstances.
But Monday chilled my spine and the lack of cohesion and performance took me down some difficult routes.
Of course this could be a blip, injuries dictating a slow start.
I hope so.

Losing a game of football is shit. Losing to them is worse. Losing to them when they are genuinely fucking awful is even worse than that.
