Post match: Man Utd v Liverpool (FAC 17/3/24 3.30pm)

Gakpo started off promisingly and was happy we signed him after watching him at the WC but other than Utd game can anyone really remember another standout game he’s had? Maybe Lask this season…

Rather have kept Origi and not signed this lad. Origi wasn’t sublime by any means but at least he had a bit of oomph in his play and popped up with some vital moments.

Carra summed Gakpo up nicely in a sentence last night, plays as if he’s in slow motion. Don’t think I’ll ever get that 5 on 2 fuck up out my head now until he’s gone.

Gakpo played in a two up top structure at the World Cup.

If he had performed better, perhaps he would’ve nailed a position. Of course that the fact remains his main two positions are either off the left or central.

We bought him in a situation where we already had Jota (injured at the time), Diaz (also injured at the time) and Nunez (who was struggling). Meant that even with Bobby gone, if they’re all fit, they cannot be of the same importance.

We ended the season with Gakpo having a bit of an edge ahead of Nunez central, but this season Nunez has largely took over Gakpo.

Please let’s not bring up Origi, it wasn’t enough for us anymore. There was no unlocked ceiling there, Gakpo might still prove to be good for us.

Absolutely valid question in more general terms is how well we have done with €200m on our last 3 big forward signings.

Exactly. It’s unbelievable that people can call themselves supporters and then insult the players and staff.
I don’t doubt that everyone at the club is working as hard as they can to bring us as much success as possible, especially this season.
We have massively overachieved when you consider last season and the complete overhaul of the midfield which took place last summer.
Supporting a club means through thick and thin and LFC fans shouldn’t need to be reminded of that.

Having slept on it, I have the same conclusion: careless.

We needed to add a third when we were well on top in the second half. If we learn just one lesson, and that lesson is to make sure you take what’s there when you are dominating, then yesterday will be useful for us in the run in.

A couple of small errors (Darwin and Elliott) were pounced on and they scored two from it. The crowd was behind them and they had wind in their sails, but we should have ended the contest before that.

A little bit more rest will be welcome, and now we need to focus. The league game at Old Trafford now gets harder, given the belief that grew for them yesterday, but I’m confident we will not be so careless in that one.

I blame Pep. He clearly fucked up the cones.

I see Gakpo is the new whipping boy, yesterday’s defeat was all his fault. Well, it wasn’t Gakpo who attempted a ridiculous cross field pass, deep in his own half, which led to Rashfords equaliser. It wasn’t Gakpo who decided to leave us exposed at the back from our corner, in the final minute of extra time.

Probably his tactics…

They brought on their substitutes earlier than we did in every single situation.

It does my head in when as soon as we get rid of one they choose another whipping boy the poor guy has just signed for us and has already 13 goals to his name yesterday he should not have come on as he was complaining about his ankle if Dann had been trusted I reckon we would not even mention his name yesterday’s defeat was the fault of the whole team players and coaches alike
Move on it was a bad day at the office

For club’s who play by the financial rules and don’t exist within a FM cheat mode bubble, there will the odd day like yesterday, even if, like LFC, they have a world class manager. Top players are human and do have off days; average players even more so, and we have one or two in our first team squad. It will be up to Xabi (or whoever) to decide either to persevere with these few and try to improve them, or move them on.

In the meantime, we’ll just have to take it on the chin, even against bitter enemies.

I think we win with Gakpo at Anfield.

I’m with you. Always.

I think we win at Anfield full stop.

Gakpo does not lose us that game, sorry to burst anyone’s bubble.

And Carragher can fuck off, I saw enough chances missed in the 90.

I was just annoying @TheSweetSilverSong about his lack of attention to detail.

But yes, I agree on your entire post, especially the Carra bit. Amazing he gets paid to blame. He should probably worry that Jürgen is in I don’t care what you think of me any more mode.

I just still cannot believe we let that useless shite Antony score.

By far the most embarrassing part of yesterday.

Agreed
We slagged him and Rashford off and it bites us on the arse…

We are at our worst when we are arrogant, as supporters anyway.

We should wait till the match is over to gloat about their failings…anything else makes us look stupid.

Forgive me as I’ve not read the whole thread, just reached your comment and I’ve missed out on a lot of posts to reply to this. So if this has been talked about I apologise.

For me there was one massive difference before and after Salah was subbed for Gakpo.

Before that Salah was a presence out wide on the right. True he wasn’t killing himself to get back every time - in fact it looked like he was scared to actually sprint with the ball or for a pass - however when Gakpo came on he immediately ignored the right attacking position and just wandered around the pitch.

That left Elliott covering the two positions which meant that he looked like he was just running around like a headless chicken at times when in reality he was covering for a player who combined his recent decision to not break sweat on the pitch with completely ignoring the position he was meant to be playing in.

I remember games that we’ve won recently where people have still been upset at Gakpo’s inability to sprint or to tackle anyone. He goes out there and literally just strolls around the pitch.

We lost our shape the minute he came onto the pitch.

That’s where we’ll be, if you guys need us, just post here and we’ll be on our way…

Yes, you are so annoying!!!

Btw, I majored in attention to detail. To question my attention to detail because of an honest mistake is like questioning Liverpool for losing to United yesterday.

I actually also did a post where I thought it would have been better for Elliott to come on in Mo’s position and bring another midfielder on as Harvey is diligent in his defensive duties and helps out in midfield and does not shy away from the ball.

My post was in response to someone having a go at Gakpo for wasting the 5 v 2 break, when Mo was just as guilty on several occasions, but I do agree Cody does too little and as I said in another post he needs some mongrel in him

I do think Cody deserves some criticism to be honest, it’s the fact from some it’s him who cost us the victory.

I would say conceding 4 goals does that and missing a hat full when on top.

Elite teams shouldn’t need more than 3 goals to win a game. It was a poor performance where injuries and tiredness started to play a factor.

Do I think our 90 mins is fine and will be 99% of the time, yes. Hopefully anymore injuries are more of a short term rotation type if so we will be ok.

Any knowledge on who flew out?
